    The three poems produced here, two from Portuguese, one from French, are taken from letters Sá-Carneiro wrote to Pessoa. The poem titled here, “The End,” is one of the better known poems of Portuguese modernism, though in the original letter, Sá-Carneiro gives it no title. Nor did he title the poem translated from French. The three poems touch on recurring thematic and stylistic features of his published work and private letters: ruins, fragments, the desire to inhabit the body of a woman (most famously as a plot point of A Confissão de Lúcio) and the anticipation of his own death (in Paris, for example, as imagined in the 1913 “Dispersão”). Likewise, all exhibit a signature practice of integrating wordless, dotted lines into poems, which he had done in earlier published and manuscript poems. These dotted lines have been restored, thanks to Ricardo Vasconcelos’ exhaustive, monumental edition of Sá-Carneiro’s poetry and correspondence with Pessoa.     Perfectionism and efficiency: Accuracy, response bias, and invested time in proof-reading performance

    Investigating problem-solving performance, Ishida, H. (2005: College students’ perfectionism and task-strategy inefficience: Why their efforts go unrewarded? Japanese Journal of Social Psychology, 20, 208–215) found high levels of perfectionism were associated with lower efficiency. Aiming to replicate and further explore this finding, the present study investigated how two dimensions of perfectionism (high standards, discrepancy between expectations and performance) predicted efficiency in proof-reading performance. N = 96 students completed a proof-reading task involving the detection of spelling, grammar, and format errors. When error-detection performance was subjected to signal detection analysis, high standards correlated positively with the number of incorrectly detected errors (false alarms). Moreover, when task-completion time was taken into account, high standards were negatively correlated with efficiency (accuracy/time). In comparison, discrepancy correlated negatively with the number of correctly detected errors (hits) and positively with a conservative response bias. The findings show that perfectionistic standards are associated with reduced efficiency demonstrating the importance of considering invested time, errors, and response bias when investigating the relationship between perfectionism and performance

However, resultant loadrate has been reported to be similar between foot strikes when running in traditional shoes, leading to questions regarding the value of running with a FFS. The influence of minimal footwear on the resultant loadrate has not been considered. This study aimed to compare component and resultant instantaneous loadrate (ILR) between runners with different foot strike patterns in their habitual footwear conditions. METHODS: 29 injury-free participants (22 males, 7 females) ran at 3.13m.s along a 30m runway, with their habitual foot strike and footwear condition. Ground reaction force data were collected. Peak ILR values were compared between three conditions; those who habitually run with a RFS in standard shoes, with a FFS in standard shoes, and with a FFS in minimal shoes. RESULTS: Peak resultant, vertical, lateral and medial ILR were lower (P < 0.001) when running in minimal shoes with a FFS than in standard shoes with either foot strike. When running with a FFS, peak posterior ILR were lower (P < 0.001) in minimal than standard shoes. CONCLUSIONS: When running in a standard shoe, peak resultant and component instantaneous loadrates were similar between footstrike patterns. However, loadrates were lower when running in minimal shoes with a FFS, compared with running in standard shoes with either foot strike. Therefore, it appears that footwear alters the loadrates during running, even with similar foot strike patterns

    Rotational Symmetry Breaking in Sodium Doped Cuprates

    For reasonable parameters a hole bound to a Na^{+} acceptor in Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} has a doubly degenerate ground state whose components can be represented as states with even (odd) reflection symmetry around the x(y) -axes. The conductance pattern for one state is anisotropic as the tip of a tunneling microscope scans above the Cu-O-Cu bonds along the x(y)-axes. This anisotropy is pronounced at lower voltages but is reduced at higher voltages. Qualitative agreement with recent experiments leads us to propose this effect as an explanation of the broken local rotational symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
