Observational and Theoretical Constraints on Singular Dark Matter Halos
The distribution of dark matter around galactic or cluster halos has usually
been assumed to be approximately isothermal with a non-zero core radius, which
is expected to be of the order of the size of the visible matter distribution.
Recently, the possibility has been raised that dark matter halos might be
singular in the sense that the dark matter density could increase
monotonically with radius down to a very small distance from the center of
galaxies or clusters. Such central cusps in the dark matter density could lead
to a high flux of gamma rays from WIMP dark matter annihilation. Here we
analyze two possibilities that have been discussed in the literature, with , and point out that such
density profiles are excluded by gravitional lensing analyses on cluster scales
and by the rotation curves of gas-rich, halo-dominated dwarf spirals on small
scales. We also point out that if spiral galaxies form by gas infall inside
dark matter halos, as they are expected to do in any hierarchical clustering
model, such profiles almost always lead to falling rotation curves after
infall, contrary to observations.Comment: 15 pages incl 4 figs, submitted to Astrophys J Lett, uuencoded

A Prediction of Observable Rotation in the ICM of Abell 3266
We present a numerical Hydro+N-body model of A3266 whose X-ray surface
brightness, temperature distribution, and galaxy spatial and velocity
distribution data are consistent with the A3266 data. The model is an old (~3
Gyr), off-axis merger having a mass ratio of ~2.5:1. The less massive
subcluster in the model is moving on a trajectory from southwest to northeast
passing on the western side of the dominant cluster while moving into the plane
of the sky at ~45 degrees. Off-axis mergers such as this one are an effective
mechanism for transferring angular momentum to the intracluster medium (ICM),
making possible a large scale rotation of the ICM. We demonstrate here that the
ICM rotation predicted by our fully 3-dimensional model of A3266 is observable
with current technology. As an example, we present simulated observations
assuming the capabilities of the high resolution X-ray spectrometer (XRS) which
was to have flown on Astro-E.Comment: 9 pages, 7 postscript figures, Fig. 3 and 6 are color postscript,

Cluster Cores, Gravitational Lensing, and Cosmology
Many multiply--imaged quasars have been found over the years, but none so far
with image separation in excess of 8\arcsec. The absence of such large
splittings has been used as a test of cosmological models: the standard Cold
Dark Matter model has been excluded on the basis that it predicts far too many
large--separation double images. These studies assume that the lensing
structure has the mass profile of a singular isothermal sphere. However, such
large splittings would be produced by very massive systems such as clusters of
galaxies, for which other gravitational lensing data suggest less singular mass
profiles. Here we analyze two cases of mass profiles for lenses: an isothermal
sphere with a finite core radius (density , and a Hernquist profile (). We find that small core radii
kpc, as suggested by the cluster data, or large a \gsim 300 h^{-1} kpc, as
needed for compatibility with gravitational distortion data, would reduce the
number of large--angle splittings by an order of magnitude or more. Thus, it
appears that these tests are sensitive both to the cosmological model (number
density of lenses) and to the inner lens structure, which is unlikely to depend
sensitively on the cosmology, making it difficult to test the cosmological
models by large--separation quasar lensing until we reliably know the structure
of the lenses themselves.Comment: 17 pages, uuencoded compressed tarred postscript file including text

The estimation of reliable indices of abundance for sedentary stocks requires the incorporation of the underlying spatial population structure, including issues arising from the sampling design and zero inflation. We applied seven spatial interpolation techniques [ordinary kriging (OK), kriging with external drift (KED), a negative binomial generalized additive model (NBGAM), NBGAM plus OK (NBGAM+OK), a general additive mixed model (GAMM), GAMM plus OK (GAMM+OK) and a zero-inflated negative binomial model (ZINB) ] to three survey datasets to estimate biomass for the gastropod Aliger gigas on the Pedro Bank Jamaica. The models were evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation diagnostics criteria for choosing the best model. We also compared the best model estimations against two common design methods to assess the consequences of ignoring the spatial structure of the species distribution. GAMM and ZINB were overall the best models but were strongly affected by the sampling design, sample size, the coefficient of variation of the sample and the quality of the available covariates used to model the distribution (geographic location, depth and habitat). More reliable abundance indices can help to improve stock assessments and the development of spatial management using an ecosystem approach.
The Shape of Dark Matter Halos: Dependence on Mass, Redshift, Radius, and Formation
Using six high resolution dissipationless simulations with a varying box size
in a flat LCDM universe, we study the mass and redshift dependence of dark
matter halo shapes for M_vir = 9.0e11 - 2.0e14, over the redshift range z=0-3,
and for two values of sigma_8=0.75 and 0.9. Remarkably, we find that the
redshift, mass, and sigma_8 dependence of the mean smallest-to-largest axis
ratio of halos is well described by the simple power-law relation = (0.54
+- 0.02)(M_vir/M_*)^(-0.050 +- 0.003), where s is measured at 0.3 R_vir and the
z and sigma_8 dependences are governed by the characteristic nonlinear mass,
M_*=M_*(z,sigma_8). We find that the scatter about the mean s is well described
by a Gaussian with sigma ~ 0.1, for all masses and redshifts. We compare our
results to a variety of previous works on halo shapes and find that reported
differences between studies are primarily explained by differences in their
methodologies. We address the evolutionary aspects of individual halo shapes by
following the shapes of the halos through ~100 snapshots in time. We determine
the formation scalefactor a_c as defined by Wechsler et al. (2002) and find
that it can be related to the halo shape at z = 0 and its evolution over time.Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, submitted to MNRA

Apple hammerhead viroid-like RNA is a bona fide viroid: Autonomous replication and structural features support its inclusion as a new member in the genus Pelamoviroid
[EN] Apple hammerhead viroid-like RNA (AHVd RNA) has been reported in different apple cultivars and geographic regions and, considering the presence of hammerhead ribozymes in both polarity strands, suspected to be either a viroid of the family Avsunviroidae or a viroid-like satellite RNA. Here we report that dimeric head-to-tail in vitro transcripts of a 433-nt reference variant of AHVd RNA from cultivar "Pacific Gala" are infectious when mechanically inoculated to apple, thus showing that this RNA is a bona fide viroid for which we have kept the name apple hammerhead viroid (AHVd) until its pathogenicity, if any, is better assessed. By combining thermodynamics-based predictions with co-variation analyses of the natural genetic diversity found in AHVd we have inferred the most likely conformations for both AHVd polarity strands in vivo, with that of the (+) polarity strand being stabilized by a kissing loop-interaction similar to those reported in peach latent mosaic viroid and chrysathemum chlorotic mottle viroid, the two known members of the genus Pelamoviroid (family Avsunviroidae). Therefore, AHVd RNA fulfills the biological and molecular criteria to be allocated to this genus, the members of which, intriguingly, display low global sequence identity but high structural conservation. We wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Marcos de la Pefia for valuable suggestions, to Maria Pedrote for excellent technical assistance, and to Dr. Miguel Cambra for facilitating access to the apple material.
Material y métodos: Como muestra piloto, participaron 14 familias.
Arc Statistics in Clusters: Galaxy Contribution
The frequency with which background galaxies appear as long arcs as a result
of gravitational lensing by foreground clusters of galaxies has recently been
found to be a very sensitive probe of cosmological models by Bartelmann et al.
(1998). They have found that such arcs would be expected far less frequently
than observed (by an order of magnitude) in the currently favored model for the
universe, with a large cosmological constant . Here we
analyze whether including the effect of cluster galaxies on the likelihood of
clusters to generate long-arc images of background galaxies can change the
statistics. Taking into account a variety of constraints on the properties of
cluster galaxies, we find that there are not enough sufficiently massive
galaxies in a cluster for them to significantly enhance the cross section of
clusters to generate long arcs. We find that cluster galaxies typically enhance
the cross section by only .Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, uses aasms4.sty, submitted to Ap
