Dynamics of a Vortex in a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate

We consider a large condensate in a rotating anisotropic harmonic trap. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, we derive the velocity of an element of vortex line as a function of the local gradient of the trap potential, the line curvature and the angular velocity of the trap rotation. This velocity yields small-amplitude normal modes of the vortex for 2D and 3D condensates. For an axisymmetric trap, the motion of the vortex line is a superposition of plane-polarized standing-wave modes. In a 2D condensate, the planar normal modes are degenerate, and their superposition can result in helical traveling waves, which differs from a 3D condensate. Including the effects of trap rotation allows us to find the angular velocity that makes the vortex locally stable. For a cigar-shape condensate, the vortex curvature makes a significant contribution to the frequency of the lowest unstable normal mode; furthermore, additional modes with negative frequencies appear. As a result, it is considerably more difficult to stabilize a central vortex in a cigar-shape condensate than in a disc-shape one. Normal modes with imaginary frequencies can occur for a nonaxisymmetric condensate (in both 2D and 3D). In connection with recent JILA experiments, we consider the motion of a straight vortex line in a slightly nonspherical condensate. The vortex line changes its orientation in space at the rate proportional to the degree of trap anisotropy and can exhibit periodic recurrences.Comment: 19 pages, 6 eps figures, REVTE

NOTICE: this is the author’s version of a work that was accepted for publication in Journal of Power Sources. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. A definitive version was subsequently published in Journal of Power Sources (2014) DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jpowsour.2013.12.125The capacitive mixing procedure for energy extraction based on Double Layer Expansion (CDLE) belongs to the group of so-called CAPMIX techniques, which aim at obtaining energy from the salinity difference between fresh and sea waters. Specifically, the CDLE technique takes advantage of the voltage rise that occurs when sea water is exchanged for river water in a pair of porous electrodes which jointly behave as an electrical double layer supercapacitor. In this article, we deal with some experimental aspects that are key for optimizing the extracted energy, and have not been analyzed yet with sufficient detail. This investigation will help in evaluating those parameters which we need to be fixed in a future CDLE device. These include the charging potential, the durations of the different cycle steps, the load resistance used, and the porosity and hydrophilicity of the carbon.Departamento de Física Aplicada, Universidad de GranadaThe research leading to these results received funding from the European Union 7th Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under agreement No. 256868. Abstract AIMS The aim of this study was to examine the effects of previous carbohydrate supplementation on high-volume resistance exercise performance METHODS Twenty males physically independent adults aged ≥18 years participated in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover study. Sixty minutes before the experimental protocol, each participant ingested 0,6 g.kg of body mass-1 of carbohydrate supplementation or placebo. Maximum voluntary isometric contraction tests were performed before and after the dynamic fatigue induction protocol consisting of 10 sets of 8 repetitions of right leg knee extensors at 120º s-1. RESULTS Lower decrement of the isometric peak torque (p<0,001) and of the rate of torque development (p<0,001) was observed in carbohydrate supplementation after the dynamic protocol. Both concentric and eccentric peak torque differed significantly (p<0,001) between carbohydrate supplementation and placebo treatments from the second set, although the slope of the force-repetitions curve was not different between them. Additionally, the carbohydrate supplementation resulted in a lower session rating of perceived exertion (p<0,05). CONCLUSIONS Previous carbohydrate supplementation attenuates muscle fatigue and internal load exercise in a high-volume isokinetic leg protocol

The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the effect of Nordic Walking (NW) on anthropometric parameters, body composition, cardiovascular parameters, aerobic capacity, blood sample, and glucose tolerance in overweight and obese subjects. The main keywords "Nordic Walking" or "Pole Walking", associated with either "obese", "obesity", "overweight", or "weight loss" were used on the online database MEDLINE, PubMed, SPORTDiscus and Scopus. Additionally, references of the studies included were screened to identify eligible articles. Applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ten manuscripts were considered as eligible for this review. The results of the studies were categorized in several domains with regard to "anthropometric parameters and body composition", "cardiovascular parameters and aerobic capacity", and "blood sample and glucose tolerance". The results showed positive effects on the anthropometric parameters, body composition, cardiovascular parameters, blood sample, and glucose tolerance. The greatest improvements were observed in supervised and high weekly frequency of NW interventions. NW could be considered as an effective modality through which to involve the obese in physical activity. For weight loss, NW should be prescribed 4-5 times per week, at least 60 min per session, preferably combined with diet control
