    Age-dependent changes in insulin-like immunoreactivity in rat submandibular salivary glands.

    In recent years, a growing interest had arisen in hormonal factors in salivary glands. We have investigated the changes in the content of an insulin-like immunoreactive (ILI) compound in the submandibular salivary glands of Sprague Dawley rats during physiological aging, in the range 15 days-27 months. The amount of ILI in the submandibular glands of young adult rats was found to be doubled in the post-natal period until the age of puberty and was maintained in senescence. No significant correlation was found between age-dependent variations in ILI levels of submandibular salivary glands and circulating insulin concentrations, further supporting previous indications that ILI is being synthesized in situ. It is possible that ILI could exert paracrine effects within the glands, as regards the development of other glandular structures during the first months of life, as well as the preservation of glandular function in senescent animals as well

    [EN] Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based composite films were prepared as polyelectrolyte membranes for low temperature direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC). The membranes were functionalised by means of the addition of graphene oxide (GO) and sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) and crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA). The chemical structure was corroborated and suitable thermal properties were found. Although the addition of GO and SGO slightly decreased the proton conductivity of the membranes, a significant reduction of the ethanol solution swelling and crossover was encountered, more relevant for those functionalised with SGO. In general, the composite membranes were stable under simulated service conditions. The addition of GO and SGO particles permitted to buffer the loss and almost retain similar proton conductivity than prior to immersion. These membranes are alternative polyelectrolytes, which overcome current concerns of actual commercial membranes such as the high cost or the crossover phenomenon.The authors would like to thank the support of the European Union through the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).     Ionically conducting and photoresponsive liquid crystalline terpolymers: Towards multifunctional polymer electrolytes

    [EN] We have prepared a series of new ionically conducting polymer electrolytes consisting of side-chain liquid crystal terpolymers with mesogenic azobenzenes, sulfonic acid groups and methyl methacrylate. The poly[10-(4-methoxyazobenzene -4'-oxy)decyl methacrylate] -co-poly[2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid]-copoly [methyl methacrylate]s, 10-MeOAzB/AMPS/MMA terpolymers, were synthesised by a one-pot conventional radical polymerisation. All samples were characterised by NMR, GPC/SEC, FT-IR, POM, XRD, DSC, UV-visible spectrophotometry and EIS. The terpolymers have light responsive properties, and exhibit liquid crystallinity over a wide range of compositions. Above a certain threshold of AMPS content, the 10-MeOAzB/AMPS/MMA terpolymers exhibit ionic conductivities in the 10(-8)-10(-4)S.cm(-1) range, with signs of decoupling of ionic mobility from segmental motions of the polymer.ARG and AMF thank the financial support of the Generalitat Valenciana, through the Grisolia and Forteza programs, and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, through the Research Projects ENE2007-67584-C03 and UPOVCE-3E-013 and the awarding of two FPI and FPU pre-doctoral grants.     Permanence criteria for semi-free profinite groups

    We introduce the condition of a profinite group being semi-free, which is more general than being free and more restrictive than being quasi-free. In particular, every projective semi-free profinite group is free. We prove that the usual permanence properties of free groups carry over to semi-free groups. Using this, we conclude that if k is a separably closed field, then many field extensions of k((x,y)) have free absolute Galois groups.Comment: 24 page

    Self-Supervised Clustering for Codebook Construction: An Application to Object Localization

    Abstract. Approaches to object localization based on codebooks do not exploit the dependencies between appearance and geometric information present in training data. This work addresses the problem of computing a codebook tailored to the task of localization by applying regularization based on geometric information. We present a novel method, the Regularized Combined Partitional-Agglomerative clustering, which extends the standard CPA method by adding extra knowledge to the clustering process to preserve as much geometric information as needed. Due to the time complexity of the methodology, we also present an implementation on the GPU using nVIDIA CUDA technology, speeding up the process with a factor over 100x

    Eficiência energética do processo top-down na produção de nanofibrilas de celulose.

    O presente estudo tem por objetivo produzir nanofibrilas de celulose vegetal com polpa kraft marrom por meio de pré-tratamento enzimático e posteriormente mecânico, com o intuito de redução no consumo energético. Para isso, as amostras de polpas de celulose foram previamente desestruturadas através da saturação em água e desmembradas em um desfibrador mecânico. Após, armazenadas sob refrigeração a 5°C. Para o pré-tratamento enzimático utilizou-se a enzima comercial Cellic Ctec-2, em porcentagens que variaram de 0,01 a 0,1% por meio de hidrólise controlada com pH neutro e temperatura ambiente durante uma hora, sendo que as amostras com quantidade de 0,01% sofreram hidrólise por diferentes períodos (1 e 2 horas). Após o tempo de hidrólise, a polpa foi processada em um moinho de discos, o qual possui medidor de energia. As polpas sofreram passagens em ciclos pelo moinho, até o ponto de se transformarem em um gel viscoso. Para estacionar a ação enzimática o conteúdo foi aquecido à 85°C. Os géis foram armazenados em resfriamento de 5°C. O processo foi caracterizado pelo gasto energético medido a cada amostra com suas testemunhas, além de ser medido o rendimento de cada gel produzido. De acordo com os resultados, foi observado que o processo combinado apresentou-se viável para a produção de nanofibrilas, pois este, diminui o tempo e gasto energético do processo. A polpa marrom mesmo sem ter passado por processos de deslignificação, mostrou-se promissora na produção das nanofibrilas de celulose vegetal

    P-rex1 cooperates with PDGFRβ to drive cellular migration in 3D microenvironments

    Expression of the Rac-guanine nucleotide exchange factor (RacGEF), P-Rex1 is a key determinant of progression to metastasis in a number of human cancers. In accordance with this proposed role in cancer cell invasion and metastasis, we find that ectopic expression of P-Rex1 in an immortalised human fibroblast cell line is sufficient to drive multiple migratory and invasive phenotypes. The invasive phenotype is greatly enhanced by the presence of a gradient of serum or platelet-derived growth factor, and is dependent upon the expression of functional PDGF receptor β. Consistently, the invasiveness of WM852 melanoma cells, which endogenously express P-Rex1 and PDGFRβ, is opposed by siRNA of either of these proteins. Furthermore, the current model of P-Rex1 activation is advanced through demonstration of P-Rex1 and PDGFRβ as components of the same macromolecular complex. These data suggest that P-Rex1 has an influence on physiological migratory processes, such as invasion of cancer cells, both through effects upon classical Rac1-driven motility and a novel association with RTK signalling complexes

    Usefulness of the organ culture system in the in vitro diagnosis of coeliac disease: A multicentre study

    Objective. Diagnosis of coeliac disease is based on the presence of villous atrophy which recovers following a gluten-free diet. The presence of circulating antiendomysial antibodies as well as their disappearance after a gluten-free diet supports the diagnosis. It has also been demonstrated that antiendomysial antibodies are detectable in supernatants of cultured intestinal biopsies from patients with coeliac disease. The objective of this study was to compare the histology and antiendomysial antibodies in culture supernatants of intestinal biopsies to validate the in vitro organ culture system as a future diagnostic tool for coeliac disease. Material and methods. Seventy-five antiendomysial serum-positive patients on a gluten-containing diet were evaluated. Patients underwent endoscopy with 5 biopsy fragments: 3 for histology, 1 cultured with and the other without gliadin-peptide activator. Antiendomysial antibodies were evaluated in all culture supernatants. Results. Sixty-eight patients had evidence of villous atrophy, while 73 out of 75 were positive to the organ culture system. The agreement rate between organ culture and histology results was 94%. Conclusions. As all the centres participating in the study obtained good agreement between organ culture and histology results, the new system could be considered a reliable tool for the diagnosis of coeliac disease. Nevertheless, it is possible to highlight cases with an organ culture-positive and -negative histology. This feature could be of considerable interest because, as the sensitivity of organ culture seems to be greater than the initial histology, the new system might be useful in uncertain cases where the risk of missing the diagnosis of coeliac disease is high
