    Get PDF

Given the scarcity of studies on sexuality in people with cerebral palsy, this study intends, with the help of a sample of adults (N = 19): (1) to explore the perceptions, needs and knowledge associated with sexuality; (2) to identify the factors associated with satisfaction in the affective / relational and sexual life of adults with cerebral palsy. A qualitative transversal and exploratory study was conducted. The sample was collected through a request for collaboration with associations that support people with cerebral palsy (eg, Cerebral Palsy Association, Lisbon, Independent Living Center Association, Mithós Association and Salvador Association). As criteria for inclusion in the sample were established: (1) understand and write in Portuguese; (2) live in Portugal; (3) be over 18 years of age; (4) have a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, without cognitive alterations; (5) respond individually, i.e. without the presence of other persons. Participants responded to an online questionnaire on an opensource platform with five open-ended questions focused on perceptions and needs related to sexuality. The data were analyzed through the Thematic Analysis that led to the identification of several properties of the "sexual pleasure" construct, allowing the identification of the meanings associated with functions, contexts, processes and sources

Teacher training forCLIL in Higher Education: challenges in blended learning

Researchers and foreign language teachers of ReCLes.pt (the Network Association of Language Centers in Higher Education in Portugal) would like to share recent research on a blended learning format for teacher training for CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), based on a course carried out in the 2nd semester of 2016/2017 for teachers at four geographically disperse polytechnic instituts in Portugal. The course was implemented in these four different educational environments and had as trainees teachers of other subjects, representing specialty areas such as Experimental and Exact Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Management. Together, the trainers from each of the four schools designed and carried out the teacher training, online and in loco, with initial face-to-face (F2F) sessions to establish a community of practice and a common objective – to learn to create conditions for learning that simultaneously promote the proposed subject and the foreign language through which it is taught. The framework of the b-learning course is the widely-used CLIL Training Guide (Morgado et al. 2015), available at http://recles.pt/, which includes techniques for scaffolding to build new concepts upon previously acquired competences and terminologically-inspired approaches and instruments for acquiring the much-needed specialist terminology of each subject. Also covered are the principles of how to teach effectively through English, activating and consolidating linguistic competences, considering aspects of classroom management and student learning styles. The assynchronous and F2F sessions also consisted of individual orientation and tutorial work with the teacher trainees, followed by classroom observation of the resulting CLIL module and interviews with the students and the teacher trainees. By ensuring the best possible application of the teachers’ new teaching competences, we aim to better understand just how students in higher education are receiving this new approach to learning through a foreign language. Overall, the present experience will serve for further national and international editions of this valuable opportunity to be trained in CLIL for higher education as it has allowed for reflection on the potential and the challenges for blended learning – ranging from the cohesion, distribution, and relevance of the topics covered to management of time for executing the assignments and to issues related to personal learning spaces. Learner satisfaction (for the teacher trainers and the students of these higher education CLIL modules) is high although realistic expectations about time are a consistent difficulty to be negotiated.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Genetics of pinus pinaster Aiton with cytoplasmic and nuclear markers

Tese de Doutoramento apresentada no Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Phisiology da Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, em UmeaThis thesis summarizes and discusses results of three studies in which biochemical and molecular techniques were used to study the genetic variation in Pinus pinaster. In particular, the investigation focused on: (i) the within- and among-population genetic diversity in the region hypothesised as a putative refugium for the species during the last glaciation; (ii) the comparison of nuclear and cytoplasmic estimates of diversity within and between two regions of the species; and (iiii) the design of a test for provenance identification using knowledge about the levels of genetic variation between the two regions. The distribution of the genetic variation of P. pinaster in Portugal, as revealed by chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSR), indicated that there are low levels of differentiation among populations and that the diversity is found mainly within populations. No discernable geographic pattern was found. Evidences of strong anthropogenic influence associated with extensive gene flow could explain these findings. Fossil, charcoal and palynological records supported the presence of the species in Portugal before and during the last glaciation; therefore, the hypothesis of a putative refugium in this country cannot be excluded. The genetic variation of 24 populations from France and Portugal was investigated with amplified fragments length polymorphisms (AFLPs) and cpSSRs. Both types of markers could discriminate between the two provenances and the diversity of the French provenance was higher compared with that from Portugal. Similar differentiation estimates were found with nuclear and cytoplasmic markers. Extensive gene flow could account for this result, but higher mutation rates and homoplasy at cpSSR loci are not to be excluded. Despite the different modes of inheritance, a high correlation was found between the genetic distances matrices with both types of markers, which suggests that migration surpassed genetic drift in moulding the genetic structure of this species in the regions studied. A provenance diagnostic test was designed, based on cpSSRs, to screen the putative origin of stands of P. pinaster in southwestern France and compared with the currently used terpene-based test. Five stands of unknown origin were diagnosed with both tests. The cpSSR-based test proved to be faster and more accurate to determine if stands were of French or northwest Iberian (Portugal and Galicia) origin. The result obtained was probably due to the higher capability of the DNA-based markers to discriminate between both provenances, compared to that of the terpene markers

    Get PDF

The intention of visiting a new restaurant social media motivated: A comparison of social circle influence vs. Social Media Influencers

Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Driven Marketing, specialization in Digital Marketing and AnalyticsSocial Media platforms have become important tools for companies to track trends and customers’ desires, people have started to share their experiences with each other online faster and more efficiently. Social Media Influencers (SMI) for restaurant recommendations have been studied for the past few years, however, there is still a lack of studies comparing the influence of people’s social circle and the information they receive through digital influencers. Therefore, the main purposes of this dissertation were to identify and understand which factors are most valued in SMI and people’ social circle regarding restaurant recommendations and verify which endorsers tend to impact more the intention to visit a restaurant trough social media. The study was conducted by adapting two existing models: Source Credibility and Source Attractiveness; and deploying a questionnaire which collected a sample of 213 Portuguese respondents. To analyse this data, we used the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling through the SmartPLS4 software. It has been found that expertise and trustworthiness of a person have a significant correlation with his/her credibility. People tend to attribute more credibility based on trustworthiness to their social circle in comparison to their opinion regarding SMI, but the model estimated shows that people are aware of SMI influence specially through their Attractiveness. It was also possible to conclude that people tend to be influenced face-to-face by their social circle

Rooting and survival of cork oak cuttings

I Congresso Luso-Brasileiro de HorticulturaThe cork oak (Quercus suber L.) has remarkable ecological, social and economic value in the Mediterranean region. Due to the growing economic interest in cork, human intervention in the plant production and renewal of this species is crucial. Thus, the optimization of the propagation methodologies to produce selected and improved trees for high quality cork production is a key factor in the species improvement program. Rooting and survival of cuttings are greatly affected by several external and internal factors. To circumvent this problem, experiments were made using young seedlings as a source of cork oak cuttings for two consecutive years. We studied the influence of the application of synthetic auxins, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), the IBA concentration and the basal bark removal in rooting and survival of cork oak cuttings. The IBA improved the rooting, the survival and the mean length of the longest root per rooted cutting, but not the mean number of primary roots produced. The basal bark removal associated with 0.5% of IBA gave the highest percent of rooting and plant survival (60% and 54%, respectively). The application of 0.1% of NAA had no significant influence on the rooting and survival. Thus, it is possible to draw the conclusion that wounding along with 0.5 % IBA produced the highest percentage of rooting and survival with cuttings planted in April, however complementary studies involving different physical and chemical conditions are requiredinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Uma manifestação de borreliose de Lyme?

    Get PDF
Introduction: Lyme borreliosis is a multisystem infectious disease believed to be emerging in Portugal. The atypical presentation in our country, possibly related to the infection with Borrelia lusitaniae, has lead to difficulties in diagnosing this spirochetosis. Therefore, a higher level of suspicion is required when evaluating non-specific manifestations of the disease. Although still not clarified, morphea is a dermatosis which linkage to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infection has been open to systematic investigation. The aim of the present research is to determine the possibility of a correlation between morphea and Lyme borreliosis, in Guarda region. Methods: This observational descriptive study was designed to retrospectively evaluate a sample of ten patients with morphea followed up at the Unidade Local de Saúde da Guarda Dermatology Department. The data was collected by reviewing clinical files and by patients’ interviewing. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed through the calculus of measures like frequencies, percentages and means. Results and Discussion: All patients were born and are living in Guarda district, where Ixodes ricinus has already been identified and some Lyme borreliosis’ seropositive cases have been detected. An epidemiological approach lead to the findings that the location and characteristics of the houses, the contact with animals and the professional and recreational activities of the patients expose them to environmental risk for tick bites, even if bites were recalled in only two cases. Concerning clinical information, symptoms accompanying the morphea lesions and coexistence with other manifestations potentially associated with the studied spirochetosis were present in some cases. There was no previous history of specific signs of Lyme borreliosis or other vector-borne diseases. Serologic first-tier testing was the only diagnostic modality used to assess the possible infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in these patients. Conclusions: Exposure to risk factors for tick bites and the clinical data determine the need for further investigation of a borrelian etiology for localized scleroderma in these patients, by the use of appropriate laboratory examinations

Banking Institutions depend almost entirely on the economic well-being and the trust of the community they serve and are embedded in a highly competitive market, making the need to know and valued customers more pressing. Taking into account recent economic developments, it should be noted that, in the process of expanding a growing economy, people are demanding more and better financial services. For financial development to occur, it is then necessary to meet these requirements and expectations, offering sophistication, quantity and quality in the services provided. Therefore, the main objective of this dissertation is centered in the analysis of the perceptions of Quality, Equity, Value, Satisfaction and Confidence that the Portuguese make about services in the Portuguese banking sector. In order to carry out the investigation, a survey was carried out in which 280 clients of banking institutions were surveyed. The results showed that the construct with the best evaluation was satisfaction and, on the contrary, perceived value was the construct that brings together the lowest evaluations. In addition to the aforementioned results, the structure of the relationship between the constructs was also studied, and it was concluded that equity positively influences Quality, Perceived Value and Satisfaction. Additionally, Perceived Value is also influenced by quality and both influence Satisfaction. Finally, Confidence is influenced by all constructs, Satisfaction being the dimension with the least impact and Perceived Value the dimension with the greatest impact on Confidence
