Residents of urban slums are at greater risk for disease than their non-slum dwelling urban counterparts. We sought to contrast the prevalences of selected non-communicable diseases (NCDs) between Brazilian adults living in a slum and the general population of the same city, by comparing the age and sex-standardized prevalences of selected NCDs from a 2010 survey in Pau da Lima, Salvador Brazil, with a 2010 national population-based telephone survey. NCD prevalences in both populations were similar for hypertension (23.6% (95% CI 20.9⁻26.4) and 22.9% (21.2⁻24.6), respectively) and for dyslipidemia (22.7% (19.8⁻25.5) and 21.5% (19.7⁻23.4)). Slum residents had higher prevalences of diabetes mellitus (10.1% (7.9⁻12.3)) and of overweight/obesity (46.5% (43.1⁻49.9)), compared to 5.2% (4.2⁻6.1) and 40.6% (38.5⁻42.8) of the general population in Salvador. Fourteen percent (14.5% (12.1⁻17.0)) of slum residents smoked cigarettes compared to 8.3% (7.1⁻9.5) of the general population in Salvador. The national telephone survey underestimated the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, overweight/obesity, and smoking in the slum population, likely in part due to differential sampling inside and outside of slums. Further research and targeted policies are needed to mitigate these inequalities, which could have significant economic and social impacts on slum residents and their communities

Improving production logistics through materials flow control and lot splitting

Competitive advantage of make-to-order manufacturing companies is highly dependent on their capability to offer short delivery times and on time delivery. This calls for effective production and materials flow control – a core part of production logistics. This paper applies discrete simulation to study the delivery performance of a make-to-order manufacturing system configured as a general flow shop, when operated under two card-based material flow control mechanisms: CONWIP and GKS. The influence of two lot splitting strategies on the performance of these mechanisms is also evaluated. Results show that GKS clearly outperforms CONWIP and that splitting strategies have a positive impact on the performance of both mechanisms. GKS also showed to be particularly robust to the variation of the number of production authorisation cards used. This, together with the fact that the card-based mechanisms require little data handling and simplify production control, makes GKS attractive for practical application in make-to-order companies. This study had the financial support of COMPETE: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sub-Bandgap Sensitization of Perovskite Semiconductors via Colloidal Quantum Dots Incorporation

ABSTRACT: By taking advantage of the outstanding intrinsic optoelectronic properties of perovskite-based photovoltaic materials, together with the strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption and electronic confinement in PbS quantum dots (QDs), sub-bandgap photocurrent generation is possible, opening the way for solar cell efficiencies surpassing the classical limits. The present study shows an effective methodology for the inclusion of high densities of colloidal PbS QDs in a MAPbI3 (methylammonium lead iodide) perovskite matrix as a means to enhance the spectral window of photon absorption of the perovskite host film and allow photocurrent production below its bandgap. The QDs were introduced in the perovskite matrix in different sizes and concentrations to study the formation of quantum-confined levels within the host bandgap and the potential formation of a delocalized intermediate mini-band (IB). Pronounced sub-bandgap (in NIR) absorption was optically confirmed with the introduction of QDs in the perovskite. The consequent photocurrent generation was demonstrated via photoconductivity measurements, which indicated IB establishment in the films. Despite verifying the reduced crystallinity of the MAPbI3 matrix with a higher concentration and size of the embedded QDs, the nanostructured films showed pronounced enhancement (above 10-fold) in NIR absorption and consequent photocurrent generation at photon energies below the perovskite bandgap.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Background: Recently, different arboviruses became endemic in Brazil mostlycausing acute febrile illnesses, however, neurological manifestations have alsobeen reported. This study aimed to investigate which viruses were involved inthe meningitis etiology and the contribution of the circulating arboviruses inSalvador, Bahia, Brazil. Methods: From June 2014 to February 2016, 170 patients with suspected viralmeningitis were identified in Couto Maia Hospital, Salvador-BA, Brazil. TheirCSF samples were investigated for possible viral etiology by reversetranscription-PCR (RT-PCR) for different arboviruses: DENV, ZIKV and CHIKV;and for the EV; and by PCR for the HHV1-5 complex (HSV1-2, VZV, EBV andCMV). Also, ELISA was carried out in a subgroup of remaining samples fordetection of DENV IgM and NS1 antigen, CHIKV IgM and ZIKV IgM.Results: Thirty-seven patients were PCR or ELISA positive for at least one of thestudied viruses (overall positivity 21.8%). EV was the agent most frequentlydetected (10 cases; 27.0%), along with all four DENV serotypes (10 cases;27.0%); followed by CHIKV (6 cases; 16.2%), ZIKV (6 cases; 16.2%), and Varicellazoster virus (VZV) (1 case; 2.7%). Four cases (10.8%) presented viral co-infectiondetected: DENV1 + CHIKV, DENV1 + EV, DENV4 + ZIKV, and CHIKV + ZIKV.Arboviruses (DENV, CHIKV and ZIKV) accounted for the great majority of cases(26 cases; 70.3%) of all single and co-infections: DENV has been the mostfrequently detected arbovirus (13 cases; 35.1%). Among non-arboviralmeningitis,the most common etiology was the EV (11 cases; 29.7%).Conclusions: Arboviruses accounted for the majority of identified virusesamong patients with suspected viral meningitis. In areas where they areendemic it is crucial to increase viral surveillance and consider them in thedifferential diagnosis of meningitis.Fil: Dias, Tamiris T.. A localized outbreak of Chikungunya virus in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

    Get PDF
A localized Chikungunya virus (CHIKV; East/Central/South African genotype) outbreak (50 cases, 70% laboratory-confirmed; attack rate: 5.3 confirmed cases/100 people) occurred in a Salvador, Brazil neighborhood, between Apr-Jun/2017. Highly clustered cases in space and time, mostly along a single street, highlight an increased risk of CHIKV transmission among pockets of susceptible populations. This finding underscores the need for ongoing local level surveillance for arboviral outbreaks.Fil: Tauro, Laura Beatriz. Fundación Oswaldo Cruz; Brasil.
