    Religiosity, Secularism, and Social Health: A Research Note

    This article is a research note addressing various theoretical and methodological issues in the measurement and analysis of religiosity and secularism and their relationship to quantifiable measures of social health in advanced and prosperous democracies. Particular attention is given to cross-national frameworks for studying religiosity and secularism as well as to the conceptualization and statistical analysis of these notions for research design. Various procedural suggestions regarding the use of comparative frameworks are presented to assist in the development and implementation of future studies gauging the impact of worldview commitments upon societal wellbeing

    GabiPD: the GABI primary database—a plant integrative ‘omics’ database

    The GABI Primary Database, GabiPD (http://www.gabipd.org/), was established in the frame of the German initiative for Genome Analysis of the Plant Biological System (GABI). The goal of GabiPD is to collect, integrate, analyze and visualize primary information from GABI projects. GabiPD constitutes a repository and analysis platform for a wide array of heterogeneous data from high-throughput experiments in several plant species. Data from different ‘omics’ fronts are incorporated (i.e. genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics), originating from 14 different model or crop species. We have developed the concept of GreenCards for text-based retrieval of all data types in GabiPD (e.g. clones, genes, mutant lines). All data types point to a central Gene GreenCard, where gene information is integrated from genome projects or NCBI UniGene sets. The centralized Gene GreenCard allows visualizing ESTs aligned to annotated transcripts as well as displaying identified protein domains and gene structure. Moreover, GabiPD makes available interactive genetic maps from potato and barley, and protein 2DE gels from Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica napus. Gene expression and metabolic-profiling data can be visualized through MapManWeb. By the integration of complex data in a framework of existing knowledge, GabiPD provides new insights and allows for new interpretations of the data

    Separation of rare earths and other valuable metals from deep-eutectic solvents: a new alternative for the recycling of used NdFeB magnets

    Deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) are used as a promising alternative to aqueous solutions for the recovery of valuable metals from NdFeB magnets. A deep-eutectic solvent based on choline chloride and lactic acid (molar ratio 1 : 2) was used for the leaching of rare earths and other metals from NdFeB magnets. A process for the separation of Fe, B and Co from Nd and Dy in the deep-eutectic solvent was developed by using the ionic liquid tricaprylmethylammonium thiocyanate (Aliquat 336 SCN, [A336][SCN]) diluted in toluene (0.9 M). The extraction parameters were optimized and stripping of B was efficiently carried out by HCl, while EDTA was employed for the recovery of Fe and Co. The separation of Nd and Dy was assessed by using two different types of extractants, a mixture of trialkylphosphine oxides (Cyanex 923) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). Based on the distribution ratios, separation factors and the ease of subsequent stripping, Cyanex 923 was chosen as the most effective extractant. The purified Dy present in the less polar phase was easily recovered by stripping with water, while the Nd present in the deep-eutectic solvent was recovered by precipitation stripping with a stoichiometric amount of oxalic acid. Nd2O3 and Dy2O3 were recovered with a purity of 99.87% and 99.94%, respectively. The feasibility to scale up this separation process was corroborated by a setup of mixer-settlers and highlighted by the possibility to fully recover and reuse the deep-eutectic solvent and the less polar phases employed in the extractions. The new proposed system based on a deep-eutectic solvent combined with traditional organic extraction phases presented higher selectivities and efficiencies than the analogous aqueous system.     Quantifying burned area for North American forests: Implications for direct reduction of carbon stocks

    A synthesis was carried out to analyze information available to quantify fire activity and burned area across North America, including a comparison of different data sources and an assessment of how variations in burned area estimate impact carbon emissions from fires. Data sets maintained by fire management agencies provide the longest record of burned area information. Canada and Alaska have the most well developed data sets consisting of the perimeters of large fires (\u3e200 ha) going back to 1959 and 1950, respectively. A similar data set back to 1980 exists for the Conterminous U.S., but contains data only from federal land management agencies. During the early half of the 20th century, average burned area across North America ranged between 10 and 20 × 106 ha yr−1, largely because of frequent surface fires in the southeastern U.S. Over the past two decades, an average of 5 × 106 ha yr−1 has burned. Moderate-resolution (500–1000 m) satellite burned area products information products appear to either underestimate burned area (GFED3 and MCD45A1) or significantly overestimate burned area (L3JRC and GLOBCARBON). Of all the satellite data products, the GFED3 data set provides the most consistent source of burned area when compared to fire management data. Because they do not suitably reflect actual fire activity, the L3JRC and GLOBCARBON burned area data sets are not suitable for use in carbon cycle studies in North America. The MCD45A1 data set appears to map a higher fraction of burned area in low biomass areas compared to the GFED3 data set

    ATTED-II provides coexpressed gene networks for Arabidopsis

    ATTED-II (http://atted.jp) is a database of gene coexpression in Arabidopsis that can be used to design a wide variety of experiments, including the prioritization of genes for functional identification or for studies of regulatory relationships. Here, we report updates of ATTED-II that focus especially on functionalities for constructing gene networks with regard to the following points: (i) introducing a new measure of gene coexpression to retrieve functionally related genes more accurately, (ii) implementing clickable maps for all gene networks for step-by-step navigation, (iii) applying Google Maps API to create a single map for a large network, (iv) including information about protein–protein interactions, (v) identifying conserved patterns of coexpression and (vi) showing and connecting KEGG pathway information to identify functional modules. With these enhanced functions for gene network representation, ATTED-II can help researchers to clarify the functional and regulatory networks of genes in Arabidopsis

    Salmonella enterica serotype Virchow associated with human infections in Switzerland: 2004-2009

    BACKGROUND: Salmonellosis is one of the most important foodborne diseases and a major threat to public health. Salmonella serotype Virchow ranks among the top five serovars in Europe. METHOD: A total of 153 strains isolated from different patients from 2004 through 2009 in Switzerland were further characterized by (i) assessing phenotypic antibiotic resistance profiles using the disk diffusion method and (ii) by genotyping using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) after macrorestriction with XbaI in order to evaluate strain relationship. RESULTS: The relative frequency of S. Virchow among other Salmonella serovars varied between 4th to 8th rank. The annual incidence ranged from 0.45/100'000 in 2004 to 0.40/100'000 in 2009. A total of 48 strains (32%) were resistant to one to 3 antimicrobials, 54 strains (36%) displayed resistance patterns to more than three antibiotics. No trend was identifiable over the years 2004 to 2009. We found a high prevalence (62%) of nalidixic acid resistant strains, suggesting an equally high rate of decreased fluoroqionolone susceptibility, whereas intermediate resistance to ciprofloxacin was negligible. Two strains were extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers. Analysis of PFGE patterns uncovered a predominant cluster (similarity coefficient above 80%) consisting of 104 of the 153 strains. CONCLUSION: The worldwide increase of antibiotic resistances in Salmonella is an emerging public health problem. For Switzerland, no clear trend is identifiable over the years 2004 to 2009 for S. Virchow. Antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance profiles varied considerably within this period. Nevertheless, the situation in Switzerland coincided with findings in other European countries. Genotyping results of this strain collection revealed no evidence for an undetected outbreak within this time period

    STUDENTS’ DROPOUT RATES AND CAUSES

    This study determined the students’ dropout rates, and identified the profile of the dropout students in terms of degree, year level, gender, religion, nationality and civil status. The data were taken from the change of program forms accomplished  by the 153 college students who dropped out from a university. The results revealed that 19 students dropped out from the College of Nursing, 12 from the BSBA Business Management, 11 from AB English and BS Accountancy and ten from the BS  in Medical Laboratory. The majority of the dropouts are first year college students, followed by the second year college students and the new freshmen. Out of 153 dropouts, 80 were male, and 73 were female.  SDA religion has the largest number of 101 dropouts, the Roman Catholics with 28 dropouts and 12 dropouts with no religion. Seventy-nine (79) Filipinos dropped out of school, followed by the Koreans with 40 dropouts, and Papua New Guineans with 13 dropouts.  One hundred forty-nine (149) single students and four married students. The 1st Sem 2013-2014 (June-October) ranks no. 1 with the biggest number of 25(.63%) dropouts. Followed by the 1st Sem 2015-2016 (August- December) with 17 (.43%) dropouts, the 3rd in rank is 1st Sem 2010-2011 (June-October)  with 13 (.36%) dropouts. The top five reasons for dropping out were identified: transferred to another school ranks no. 1 with the highest number of dropouts, go back home ranks no. 2, family problem ranks no. 3, health problems ranks no. 4 and personal problem ranks no. 5

    In silico Analysis of Transcription Factor Repertoire and Prediction of Stress Responsive Transcription Factors in Soybean

    Sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factors (TFs) are often termed as ‘master regulators’ which bind to DNA and either activate or repress gene transcription. We have computationally analysed the soybean genome sequence data and constructed a proper set of TFs based on the Hidden Markov Model profiles of DNA-binding domain families. Within the soybean genome, we identified 4342 loci encoding 5035 TF models which grouped into 61 families. We constructed a database named SoybeanTFDB (http://soybeantfdb.psc.riken.jp) containing the full compilation of soybean TFs and significant information such as: functional motifs, full-length cDNAs, domain alignments, promoter regions, genomic organization and putative regulatory functions based on annotations of gene ontology (GO) inferred by comparative analysis with Arabidopsis. With particular interest in abiotic stress signalling, we analysed the promoter regions for all of the TF encoding genes as a means to identify abiotic stress responsive cis-elements as well as all types of cis-motifs provided by the PLACE database. SoybeanTFDB enables scientists to easily access cis-element and GO annotations to aid in the prediction of TF function and selection of TFs with functions of interest. This study provides a basic framework and an important user-friendly public information resource which enables analyses of transcriptional regulation in soybean

    Genome-Wide Analysis of Two-Component Systems and Prediction of Stress-Responsive Two-Component System Members in Soybean

    In plants, the two-component systems (TCSs) play important roles in regulating diverse biological processes, including responses to environmental stress stimuli. Within the soybean genome, the TCSs consist of at least 21 histidine kinases, 13 authentic and pseudo-phosphotransfers and 18 type-A, 15 type-B, 3 type-C and 11 pseudo-response regulator proteins. Structural and phylogenetic analyses of soybean TCS members with their Arabidopsis and rice counterparts revealed similar architecture of their TCSs. We identified a large number of closely homologous soybean TCS genes, which likely resulted from genome duplication. Additionally, we analysed tissue-specific expression profiles of those TCS genes, whose data are available from public resources. To predict the putative regulatory functions of soybean TCS members, with special emphasis on stress-responsive functions, we performed comparative analyses from all the TCS members of soybean, Arabidopsis and rice and coupled these data with annotations of known abiotic stress-responsive cis-elements in the promoter region of each soybean TCS gene. Our study provides insights into the architecture and a solid foundation for further functional characterization of soybean TCS elements. In addition, we provide a new resource for studying the conservation and divergence among the TCSs within plant species and/or between plants and other organisms

    Functional dissection of the Drosophila Kallmann's syndrome protein DmKal-1

    BACKGROUND: Anosmin-1, the protein implicated in the X-linked Kallmann's syndrome, plays a role in axon outgrowth and branching but also in epithelial morphogenesis. The molecular mechanism of its action is, however, widely unknown. Anosmin-1 is an extracellular protein which contains a cysteine-rich region, a whey acidic protein (WAP) domain homologous to some serine protease inhibitors, and four fibronectin-like type III (FnIII) repeats. Drosophila melanogaster Kal-1 (DmKal-1) has the same protein structure with minor differences, the most important of which is the presence of only two FnIII repeats and a C-terminal region showing a low similarity with the third and the fourth human FnIII repeats. We present a structure-function analysis of the different DmKal-1 domains, including a predicted heparan-sulfate binding site. RESULTS: This study was performed overexpressing wild type DmKal-1 and a series of deletion and point mutation proteins in two different tissues: the cephalopharyngeal skeleton of the embryo and the wing disc. The overexpression of DmKal-1 in the cephalopharyngeal skeleton induced dosage-sensitive structural defects, and we used these phenotypes to perform a structure-function dissection of the protein domains. The reproduction of two deletions found in Kallmann's Syndrome patients determined a complete loss of function, whereas point mutations induced only minor alterations in the activity of the protein. Overexpression of the mutant proteins in the wing disc reveals that the functional relevance of the different DmKal-1 domains is dependent on the extracellular context. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the role played by the various protein domains differs in different extracellular contexts. This might explain why the same mutation analyzed in different tissues or in different cell culture lines often gives opposite phenotypes. These analyses also suggest that the FnIII repeats have a main and specific role, while the WAP domain might have only a modulator role, strictly connected to that of the fibronectins
