    Improved Effective Range Expansion for Casimir-Polder potential

    We study the effective range expansion of scattering on a real Casimir-Polder potential. We use Liouville transformations which transform the potential landscape while preserving the reflection and transmission amplitudes. We decompose the scattering calculation in two more elementary problems, one for the homogeneous 1/z^4 potential and the other one for the correction to this idealization. We use the symmetries of the transformed problem and the properties of the scattering matrices to derive an improved effective range expansion leading to a more accurate expansion of scattering amplitudes at low energy

    First test on Photonic Crystal Fiber potential for broadband interferometry

    International audienceThe Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) are microstructured waveguides currently developed in the frame of metrology, non-linear optics or coherent tomography. PCF studies are mainly focused on the improvement of dispersion property and wide spectral single-mode operating domain. Consequently, in the astronomical context, this kind of fiber is a good candidate to design a fiber linked version of stellar interferometer for aperture synthesis. In this paper, we study the potential of these fibers taking advantage of the wide spectral single-mode operation. We propose an experimental setup acting as a two-beam interferometer using PCFs to measure fringes contrasts at four different wavelengths (670nm, 980nm, 1328nm and 1543nm) corresponding to R, I, J and H astronomical bands with the same couple of PCFs. For this purpose, we implement for the first time a piezoelectric PCF optical path modulator

    Economic Analysis of Summer Fallow Management to Reduce Take-All and N-Leaching in a Wheat Crop Rotation

    This paper addresses the question of summer cover crop adoption by farmers in presence of a risk of yield loss due to take-all disease and climate variability. To analyse the public incentives needed to encourage farmers to adopt summer cover crops as a means of reducing N leaching, we combine outputs from an economic, an epidemiological and an agronomic model. The economic model is a simple model of choice under uncertainty. The farmer is assumed to choose among a range of summer fallow managements and input uses on the basis of the expected utility criterion (HARA assumption) in presence of both climate and take all risks. The epidemiological model proposed by Ennaïfar et al. (2007) is used to determine the impact of take all on yields and N-uptake. The crop-soil model (STICS) is used to\ud compute yield developments and N-leaching under various management options and climatic conditions. These models are calibrated to match the conditions prevailing in Grignon, located in the main wheatgrowing\ud area in France. Eight management systems are examined: 4 summer fallow managements: 'wheat volunteers' (WV), 'bare soil' (BS), 'early mustard' (EM), 'late mustard' (LM), and 2 input intensities. We show that the optimal systems are BS (WV) when the take-all risk is (not) taken into account by agents. We then compute the minimum payment to each system such that it emerges in the optimum. We thus derive the required amounts of transfer needed to trigger catch crop adoption. The results of the Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis show that the ranking of management systems is robust over a wide range of input parameters

    070: Heterogeneity in regional peaks of left ventricular deformation is correlated with exercise capacity in primitive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

    ObjectivePrevious studies have described a left ventricular (LV) heterogeneity in regional peaks of deformation in patients with primitive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We studied this heterogeneity in HCM patients with echocardiography both at rest and during exercise in order to evaluate its correlation with exercise capacity.MethodsThirty consecutive HCM patients were evaluated with echocardiography at rest and during exercise on a dedicated table. 2D speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) was used to assess LV deformation heterogeneity according to the standard deviation between systolic peaks of regional longitudinal strains.ResultsAge was 55.1±12.7 yrs, maximal wall thickness was 20.3±.4mm. Maximal load during exercise was 94±41 Watts. LV ejection fraction was preserved both at rest and during exercise (67±8% at rest and 69±8% during exercise). Global longitudinal strain (GLS) was altered (-15.5±4.1% at rest and -15.2±5.9% during exercise). Heterogeneity in regional peaks of deformation was 54.6±27.8ms at rest and 41.3±23.9ms during exercise. We noted correlations between maximal load achieved (r=-0.48, p=0.007), exercise GLS (r=0.47, p=0.009) and maximal LV thickness (r=0.48, p=0.007) with the level of LV deformation heterogeneity recorded during exercise. These correlations were lower if we considered LV deformation heterogeneity at rest. The population was then divided in 2 groups according to the level of exercise heterogeneity in regional peaks of deformation (cut-off value of 41ms, i.e. mean value of the global population). The group with the more marked heterogeneity of LV deformation showed the thicker wall, the lower GLS at exercise and the weaker exercise capacity. This result was independent of the age.ConclusionIn CMH patients exercise echocardiography add information. Indeed heterogeneity in regional peaks of deformation in longitudinal LV is correlated with exercise capacity and importance of myocardial hypertrophy

    Sweet and Sour Ehrlichia: Glycoproteomics and Phosphoproteomics Reveal New Players in Ehrlichia ruminantium Physiology and Pathogenesis

Herein, we used mass spectrometry-based assays to study protein phosphorylation and glycosylation in Ehrlichia ruminantium Gardel virulent (ERGvir) and attenuated (ERGatt) variants and, how they can modulate Ehrlichia biological processes. The characterization of the S/T/Y phosphoproteome revealed that both strains share the same set of phosphoproteins (n = 58), 36% being overexpressed in ERGvir. The percentage of tyrosine phosphorylation is high (23%) and 66% of the identified peptides are multi-phosphorylated. Glycoproteomics revealed a high percentage of glycoproteins (67% in ERGvir) with a subset of glycoproteins being specific to ERGvir (n = 64/371) and ERGatt (n = 36/343). These glycoproteins are involved in key biological processes such as protein, amino-acid and purine biosynthesis, translation, virulence, DNA repair, and replication. Label-free quantitative analysis revealed over-expression in 31 proteins in ERGvir and 8 in ERGatt. While further PNGase digestion confidently localized 2 and 5 N-glycoproteins in ERGvir and ERGatt, respectively, western blotting suggests that many glycoproteins are O-GlcNAcylated. Twenty-three proteins were detected in both the phospho- and glycoproteome, for the two variants. This work represents the first comprehensive assessment of PTMs on Ehrlichia biology, rising interesting questions regarding ER-host interactions. Phosphoproteome characterization demonstrates an increased versatility of ER phosphoproteins to participate in different mechanisms. The high number of glycoproteins and the lack of glycosyltransferases-coding genes highlight ER dependence on the host and/or vector cellular machinery for its own protein glycosylation. Moreover, these glycoproteins could be crucial to interact and respond to changes in ER environment. PTMs crosstalk between of O-GlcNAcylation and phosphorylation could be used as a major cellular signaling mechanism in ER. As little is known about the Ehrlichia proteins/proteome and its signaling biology, the results presented herein provide a useful resource for further hypothesis-driven exploration of Ehrlichia protein regulation by phosphorylation and glycosylation events.
