    Highway to Masculinity

The essay analyzes Erik Kripke\u27s television show Supernatural, in which gender roles and relationships, archetypes, symbolism, and the inner psyche function to both promote and challenge hegemonic masculinity. Several sources were used to support findings, including the complexity of gender roles, the effects of showcasing hegemonic masculinity, and what we learn from such depictions. Supernatural presents a strong, bonded relationship between two heterosexual men. This representation is important because of the archetypes that the main characters portray. Since it is impossible for one man to be a perfect man, the brothers Sam and Dean represent the juxtaposition of complementary masculinities. I argue that the show depicts the importance of a durable friendship and the complicated workings of grief and trauma but it also addresses the ways men are supposed to process these emotions. Thus providing us with a helpful guideline

Razors, Shaving and Gender Construction: An Inquiry into the Material Culture of Shaving

Physical appearance is an important aspect of an individual's sense of personal identity, particularly in the context of the modern consumer society. The purpose of this study is to explore the ways in which the processes and material components of one particular grooming practice, namely shaving, both reflect and reinforce traditional gender distinctions in modern North American culture. Drawing on a variety of theories and methodologies, this paper attempts to identify the symbolic categories embedded in razor design, and to suggest some of the ways in which these symbolic meanings are circulated. This preliminary exploration suggests that modern shaving practices are a ritualistic process embodying traditional cultural gender prescriptions, and that manufacturers and marketers of these products almost universally incorporate specific ranges of associative imagery in their designs.

Climate simulation of the latest Permian: Implications for mass extinction

    Get PDF
This report presents the results of climate modeling research which indicates that elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at the end of the Permian period led to climatic conditions inhospitable to both marine and terrestrial life. The Permian-Triassic boundary (about 251 million years ago) was the time of the largest known mass extinction in Earth's history, when greater than ninety percent of all marine species, and approximately seventy percent of all terrestrial species, died out. The model, which used paleogeography and paleotopography correct for the time period, indicated that warm high-latitude surface air temperatures and elevated carbon dioxide levels may have resulted in slowed circulation and stagnant, anoxic conditions in Earth's oceans. The report also suggests that the excess carbon dioxide (and sulfur dioxide) may have originated from volcanic activity associated with eruption of the Siberian Trap flood basalts, which took place at the same time. Middle Triassic paleosols and paleoclimate of Antarctica

The Lashly Formation in the Allan Hills of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, is now at a latitude of 768S and during the Middle Triassic was at least 708S. The combined evidence of fossil roots and soils indicates a paleoclimate unusual for such a high latitude. Temperate paleotemperature is indicated by roots, logs, and leaves of woody plants and the degree of chemical weathering and clay formation within the paleosols. Paleosols of the Lashly Formation are more like soils of southern Sweden than those of either Finland or southern Europe. Silt infiltration structures around root traces and in cracks within the paleosols are evidence for a seasonally snowy climate, but there is no evidence of ice wedges or other permafrost features in the paleosols. Other evidence of climatic seasonality includes well-defined growth rings in fossil wood, and abscission scars at the base of fossil leaves. Diverse broadleaf plants, and noncalcareous paleosols, indicate a humid climate with mean annual precipitation of about 1200 mm. Such a wet climate is anomalous for the interior of the supercontinent of Pangea, and such a warm and mildly seasonal climate is anomalous for such high latitudes. This paleoclimatic anomaly may be a lingering effect of global greenhouse initiated at the Permian–Triassic boundary. Paleoclimatic variables calculated here may be useful for recalibrating global paleoclimatic models for the middle Triassi
