The European Research Area (ERA) Progress Report 2016 shows the state of play in ERA. A lot has happened in the European research landscape since the last edition in 2014. The ERA Roadmap at EU level was endorsed by the Council in early 2015. This called for top action priorities that will have the biggest impact on Europe’s science and innovation systems. Member States were invited to draw up national action plans based on this approach. Last year almost all Member States and a number of Associated Countries have published their National Action Plans on ERA showing clear political ownership of ERA. This analysis carried out in 2016 shows strong progress in all ERA priorities across the EU. This was possible because of a true partnership among the Member States and Associated Countries, the Commission and research stakeholder organisations. But we cannot be complacent. European strength in the field of Research and Innovation is needed more than ever to reinforce competitiveness but is also increasingly challenged to deliver on impacts. The Commission’s policy agenda on Open Science, Open Innovation and Open to the World will open up ERA to future challenges, like digitalisation and global networks. There are new barriers to break down to create more wealth and security for our citizens

It's not the break that's the problem: Women SET professionals and career breaks in European companies

This report is focused on what companies can do to support women returning to work after a career break and to continue to progress their careers. Clearly company specific work life balance policies have a significant role to play but it is important to recognise the wide range of other factors within a broader cultural context. The decisions that women make at the time of maternity including whether or not to work part time on returning to work, can often determine what options they might have at a later stage in their careers. Yet these crucial decisions are not made in isolation but are strongly influenced by gendered cultural assumptions both inside and outside of the workplace. As well as company policies these include national legal frameworks, availability of care networks, work status, as well as personal preference

Due to the small visual angle of a camera in relation to the human eye an idea occurred to make a device that will move the camera on the mobile transport device and it will be controlled by rotating the human head in desired direction. In this paper we elaborated the idea and realization of the system. The whole system consists of two parts. The first part is called an assembly for measuring the head rotation angle. It consists of a gyroscope, controller, Bluetooth module and of a helmet on which all components are placed. The inputs of the system are two angles of head rotation which are then processed and sent wirelessly to the another part of the system. The second part is called an assembly for moving a camera. It consists of Bluetooth module, controller, two servomotors and a camera. Inputs to the second system are data received via Bluetooth connection between the two systems, which are then used for modeling two signals for servo motors that are rotating the camera to the desired direction

New primary production in northwest European shelf seas, 1960–2003

Spatial and temporal patterns from 1960 to 2003 in annual potential new primary production (PNP) of the NW European shelf seas were derived from general additive models of nitrate concentrations and from data on riverine and atmospheric fluxes of oxidized nitrogen. Average PNP was highest in the seasonally stratified outer shelf regions (>70 gC m-2 yr-1), where the proportion of PNP accounted for by vertical fluxes from deep water (>65%) was correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. PNP was lowest in the central North Sea (~30 gC m-2 yr-1) and in the southern North Sea was correlated with river inputs that accounted for 24% of the annual total (average ~50 gC m-2 yr-1). Atmospheric deposition accounted for ~3% of annual PNP region-wide, but in the northern North Sea this was higher than the contribution from rivers. Tidal fronts are traditionally considered to be highly productive zones, but we find them to have characteristically low PNP and conclude that they must be loci of high recycled production. The results indicate an exceptional flux of nitrate-rich ocean water onto the shelf in the early 1990s, which resulted in a pulse of PNP coincident with a well-documented 'regime shift' in the pelagic food web. North Sea-wide, long-term average PNP was approximately equal to production by all higher trophic levels combined, though trophic propagation of inter-annual variations was weakly defined. Nevertheless, there is a case for proposing that harvesting in areas and periods of low PNP should be managed more conservatively to minimize the risk of detrimental effects on the food web
