An overview of three decades of mergers and acquisitions research

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have long attracted managers’ attention and have been researched in different perspectives and using different theories. In this study we grasp the wealth of extant research in the field of M&As. We conducted a bibliometric study of 635 articles on strategic management and international business research published in 34 highly ranked management journals between 1983 and 2012. We performed citation, co-citation and factor analyses to uncover the issues examined by scholars, the main theoretical approaches and themes researched. The results show a relative shift from economic and financial approaches to knowledge-based and organizational learning perspectives in recent years. There was also an evolution from assessing the performance of firms after an M&A to seeking an understanding of what may drive synergy creation after the integration process. Furthermore we observed an increasing interest in cross-border M&As. We discuss our findings, identifying gaps and suggesting paths for future research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Web Intelligence Hub – A tool for integrating web data in Official Statistics

[EN] The use of the World Wide Web as a source of big data has become quite common. However, the use of web data in regular statistical production following the quality standards expected in official statistics has particular requirements and is not easy. The Web Intelligence Hub (WIH) is a European Statistical System (ESS) statistical infrastructure built to address those requirements. The WIH is being developed in the context of the Trusted Smart Statistics, an ESS initiative launched to address the issues raised by the use of new types of data and sources. The initiative is organised in hubs, with each hub specialising on data sources with similar characteristics and processing similar types of data. The WIH is the pillar of the TSS that provides the fundamental building blocks for harvesting information from the Web to be used in statistics. The WIH implements the principles adopted for the trusted smart statistics. It follows a modular architecture in order to be easily evolvable to the technological changes occurring on the Web. The processes running in the hub and the corresponding outputs are open, transparent and auditable. The WIH will provide several services to the ESS, such as commonly agreed partnership models with web portals, commonly agreed data gathering, processing and statistical methodologies, algorithms and ready to run scripts. The data and scripts running in the WIH will also be available to the partners as a service.Reis, F. (2022). The Web Intelligence Hub – A tool for integrating web data in Official Statistics. Understanding the Footprint of the RBV in International Business Studies: the Last Twenty Years of Research

    Get PDF
International business (IB) research has evolved substantially over the past four decades incorporating new concerns and theoretical contributions. During the past two decades, the Resource-Based View (RBV) has gained the preference of many IB scholars and has gradually become one of the dominant theoretical perspectives for studying IB decisions and operations. The 1991 article “Firm resources and sustained competitive advantage” by Jay Barney is recognized as a fundamental contribution to the Resource-Based View (RBV). In this paper we assess the influence of the RBV, proxied by Jay Barney’s (1991) article, on IB research over the twenty years period, from 1991 to 2010. In this bibliometric study of the articles published in the leading journal for IB research – Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) – we conduct citation and co-citation analyses, the networks of co-authorship, and delve into the analysis of the key research topics. Beyond understanding the extant research we also contribute to i identifying future research avenues.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Validation studies of the clock drawing test in mild cognitive impairment

Introduction: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a transitional entity between normal aging and Alzheimer’s disease. It is assumed that an early identification and intervention in MCI may delay or slow its progression to dementia and several neuropsychological brief-tests have been investigated in this context. The Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is a widely used instrument in this field; however, its application needs further validation in specific clinical populations, mainly in milder forms of cognitive decline and in the distinction between MCI subtypes. Objectives: To validate three scoring systems of the CDT for the detection of cognitive impairment in a cohort of MCI-patients previously classified in amnestic single-domain (aMCI) and amnestic multidomain (mdMCI) subtypes; to test inter-rater reliability and to compare different subtypes of MCI, attempting to define performance profiles according to qualitative analyses of errors. Methods: The study includes two clinical groups: aMCI and mdMCI, each with 90 subjects, recruited at the Neurology Department of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra. Their performance was compared with a cohort of 90 community-dwelling controls matched according to gender, age and education. All participants were assessed with Mini Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and CDT. Clock drawings of MCI patients were scored by a neuropsychologist and an inexperienced rater using three scoring systems - Rouleau, Cahn and Babins. Data were analysed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: There was high inter-rater reliability in CDT scoring systems (p<0,001). Significant correlations were found between the cognitive screening instruments and CDT scoring systems as well as a consistent relationship with performance in visuospatial and executive domains of the MoCA. We also observed qualitative differences between both forms of DCL, with higher error rate of “Conceptual deficit” and “Perseveration” in mdMCI, and “Nonspecific spatial error” regarding the aMCI group. There was only sufficient (60%) discriminatory capacity of total scores of the CDT, comparing control and MCI subjects. Conclusions: Our study showed that CDT scoring systems have high inter-rater reliability to screen for MCI and can be applied in large scale studies and primary health care. Although in this context CDT revealed only sufficient discriminatory capacity and should be used with other cognitive screening tests in order to increase the diagnostic accuracy

Culture in international business research: a bibliometric study in four top IB journals

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to conduct a study on the articles published in the four top international business (IB) journals to examine how four cultural models and concepts – Hofstede’s (1980), Hall’s (1976), Trompenaars’s (1993) and Project GLOBE’s (House et al., 2004) – have been used in the extant published IB research. National cultures and cultural differences provide a crucial component of the context of IB research. Design/methodology – This is a bibliometric study on the articles published in four IB journals over the period from 1976 to 2010, examining a sample of 517 articles using citations and co-citation matrices. Findings – Examining this sample revealed interesting patterns of the connections across the studies. Hofstede’s (1980) and House et al.’s (2004) research on the cultural dimensions are the most cited and hold ties to a large variety of IB research. These findings point to a number of research avenues to deepen the understanding on how firms may handle different national cultures in the geographies they operate. Research limitations – Two main limitations are faced, one associated to the bibliometric method, citations and co-citations analyses and other to the delimitation of our sample to only four IB journals, albeit top-ranked. Originality/value – The paper focuses on the main cultural models used in IB research permitting to better understand how culture has been used in IB research, over an extended period.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
