    Information Literacy and Mathematics Education Students: A Case Study in Library Instruction

    Prior to 2016 library instruction for mathematics courses was nonexistent at Shippensburg University. The hiring of the STEM librarian in August 2016 led to an initiative to engage the mathematics faculty and students in using resources and services offered by the Ezra Lehman Memorial Library. This outreach resulted in two sessions of the Fundamentals of Mathematics course coming into the library for instruction in the fall semester. These first sessions found that detailed instruction in how to search and identify articles related to key concepts from the desired journal type was particularly useful to the students; however, these sessions also demonstrated a greater need for citation-focused instruction. Adapting the instruction session spring 2017 to include a more in-depth discussion about the necessity of citations showed a greater understanding of the concept by students in the course. Ultimately, this successful instruction improved the course instructor’s perception of the student work and led to the scheduling of future library instruction sessions by other members of the mathematics department

    Visualization of defect-induced excitonic properties of the edges and grain boundaries in synthesized monolayer molybdenum disulfide

    Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are attractive materials for next generation nanoscale optoelectronic applications. Understanding nanoscale optical behavior of the edges and grain boundaries of synthetically grown TMDCs is vital for optimizing their optoelectronic properties. Elucidating the nanoscale optical properties of 2D materials through far-field optical microscopy requires a diffraction-limited optical beam diameter sub-micron in size. Here we present our experimental work on spatial photoluminescence (PL) scanning of large size ( ≥50\geq 50 microns) monolayer MoS2_2 grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using a diffraction limited blue laser beam spot (wavelength 405 nm) with a beam diameter as small as 200 nm allowing us to probe nanoscale excitonic phenomena which was not observed before. We have found several important features: (i) there exists a sub-micron width strip (∼500\sim 500 nm) along the edges that fluoresces ∼1000%\sim 1000 \% brighter than the region far inside; (ii) there is another brighter wide region consisting of parallel fluorescing lines ending at the corners of the zig-zag peripheral edges; (iii) there is a giant blue shifted A-excitonic peak, as large as ∼120\sim 120 meV, in the PL spectra from the edges. Using density functional theory calculations, we attribute this giant blue shift to the adsorption of oxygen dimers at the edges, which reduces the excitonic binding energy. Our results not only shed light on defect-induced excitonic properties, but also offer an attractive route to tailor optical properties at the TMDC edges through defect engineering.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures in Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 201

    Hunger cues versus the passage of time in the resolution of an approach-avoidance conflict

    Two experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that approach-avoidance conflict becomes associated with hunger cues during conflict acquisition in a straight alley runway, and that these cues lose some of their avoidance properties during that period of time spent outside the conflict situation. When the animals are returned to the alley, the avoidance component associated with hunger cues is already extinguished, and the animal makes the goal response. Thirty-six naive male albino rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain were used in experiment I. An approach-avoidance conflict was generated in the traditional manner by first pairing the approach response with food and, after firmly establishing the approach component, pairing it with shock until the animal failed to make any forward movement. In order to insure that the gradients intersected at the same point, Ss were given extinction trials until they moved from 8 to 12 in. down the alley, and matched. They were then randomly assigned to three groups: an alley group, a home-cage satiation group, and a home-cage deprivation group. These designations refer to where the time following the conflict training was spent and, for the home-cage groups, the drive condition (satiation or deprivation) during this period. Trial-by-trial extinction (two trials per day) was administered until the alley group extinguished the avoidance response to the criterion of two successive goal responses. As soon as the alley group reached the criterion, the home-cage groups were placed on 100% deprivation for 24 hours, and subsequently were given all extinction trials in one day until the criterion was reached

    It Takes a Team to Make It Through: The Role of Social Support for Survival and Self-Care After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant

    Background: Social support plays an important role for health outcomes. Support for those living with chronic conditions may be particularly important for their health, and even for their survival. The role of support for the survival of cancer patients after receiving an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (alloHCT) is understudied. To better understand the link between survival and support, as well as different sources and functions of support, we conducted two studies in alloHCT patients. First, we examined whether social support is related to survival (Study 1). Second, we examined who provides which support and which specific support-related functions and tasks are fulfilled by lay caregivers and healthcare professionals (Study 2). Methods: In Study 1, we conducted a retrospective chart review of alloHCT patients (N = 173, 42.8% female, age: M = 49.88) and registered availability of a dedicated lay caregiver and survival. In Study 2, we prospectively followed patients after alloHCT (N = 28, 46.4% female, age: M = 53.97, 46.4% ethnic minority) from the same hospital, partly overlapping from Study 1, who shared their experiences of support from lay caregivers and healthcare providers in semi-structured in-depth interviews 3 to 6 months after their first hospital discharge. Results: Patients with a dedicated caregiver had a higher probability of surviving to 100 days (86.7%) than patients without a caregiver (69.6%), OR = 2.84, p = 0.042. Study 2 demonstrated the importance of post-transplant support due to patients' emotional needs and complex self-care regimen. The role of lay caregivers extended to many areas of patients' daily lives, including support for attending doctor's appointments, managing medications and financial tasks, physical distancing, and maintaining strict dietary requirements. Healthcare providers mainly fulfilled medical needs and provided informational support, while lay caregivers were the main source of emotional and practical support. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of studying support from lay caregivers as well as healthcare providers, to better understand how they work together to support patients' adherence to recommended self-care and survival

    High-Risk Environmental Conditions Attenuates Performance Efficiency Index in NCAA DI Female Soccer Players

    International Journal of Exercise Science 15(6): 442-454, 2022. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of environmental conditions on running performance and performance efficiency index (Effindex). Performance data recorded using Polar Team Pro sensors from eight collegiate female soccer players in nine matches were analyzed during the 2019 competitive season. Effindex and running performance, including total distance covered (TDREL) and distance covered in five speed thresholds relative to minutes played, were examined for indications of fatigue with respect to environmental conditions, including ambient temperature and relative humidity. Matches were separated into three groups based on environmental conditions: Low-Risk (n = 2 matches), Moderate-Risk (n = 3 matches), or High-Risk (n = 4 matches). Speed thresholds were grouped as follows: walking (WALKREL), jogging (JOGREL), low-speed running (LSRREL), high-speed running (HSRREL), and sprinting (SPRINTREL). A significant effect was observed for TDREL in all environmental conditions (η2 = 0.614). TDREL was significantly lower in the High-Risk (p = 0.002; 95.32 ± 12.04 m/min) and Moderate-Risk conditions (p = 0.004; 94.85 ± 9.94 m/min) when compared to Low-Risk (105.61 ± 9.95 m/min). WALKREL (p = 0.005), JOGREL (p = 0.005) LSRREL (p = 0.001), HSRREL (p = 0.035), SPRINTREL (p = 0.017), and Effindex (p = 0.0004) were significantly greater in Low-Risk conditions when compared to Moderate-Risk conditions. WALKREL (p = 0.005), HSRREL (p = 0.029), SPRINTREL (p = 0.005), and Effindex (p = 0.0004) were significantly greater in Low-Risk conditions when compared to High-Risk conditions. High-Risk environmental conditions may result in adverse performance in female collegiate soccer players

    Report 14: Online community involvement in COVID-19 research & outbreak response: early insights from a UK perspective

    The Patient Experience Research Centre (PERC) at Imperial College London is developing research to explore and understand people’s views about, experiences of and behavioural responses to the outbreak in the UK and elsewhere. To guide that effort and to help inform COVID-19 research and responses more broadly - for example in mathematical modelling and policy - PERC launched an online community involvement initiative that sought rapid, early insight from members of the public and aimed to establish a network for ongoing community engagement. Priority areas for COVID-19 research Vaccine development was considered the most urgent research priority for many respondents. Social studies exploring the public’s experiences, risk perceptions and behaviours during this outbreak were necessary and important according to 95% of the respondents. Such research could: Improve the way the current outbreak response is planned and implemented; Improve the way information and guidance is provided to and understood by the public; Optimise the support provided to communities and vulnerable groups; and Improve future outbreak preparedness. Other recommended areas of research included: Understanding the role of the media in influencing how people react and respond; Furthering our basic understanding of the virus – how it spreads, who it affects the most and why, and whether people achieve and maintain immunity after being infected; Critiquing the UK’s response to the pandemic against that of other countries; and Ensuring lessons can be learnt from this outbreak to better equip us for future outbreaks, and public health emergencies in general. Key unmet needs amongst communities The main challenges described by respondents were ineffective communication, including access to information and information overload; and conflicting guidance and misinformation. Respondents’ described feelings of concern, confusion and, in some cases, panic as a result of these communication and information challenges. Others shared their frustration that there was nowhere to post their concerns or questions. In addition, respondents expressed a need for more detailed and bespoke practical guidance about their risk and how best to prepare and protect themselves and their loved ones. Almost half (47%) wanted to hear about the latest research on the virus, and 45% wanted a dedicated internet portal where they could access the latest information and trusted guidance. Making information more accessible to different communities, including those who are not online and those who have English as a second language was also highlighted as a priority

    UNC System Math Pathways’ Digital Course Enhancement Collaboration to Improve Equity, Instruction, and Access During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    This study examines how faculty members and students evaluated, perceived, and used a digital course content collection developed to support high quality remote instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic. The collections were the result of a multi-institutional, collaborative effort within the University of North Carolina System to support its students and faculty. Using surveys from faculty and demographically identified students enrolled in their classes, the authors evaluate the perceived utility and impact of the open educational resource collections. Faculty members rated the collections highly and typically found utility in at least some of the components of the collections. They found activities, videos and assessments to be the most useful tools. Students generally responded positively to the classes using the collections. While students who identified as minority found the materials useful or beneficial, they did not do so in proportional numbers to non-minority students

    Qualitative study exploring the phenomenon of multiple electronic prescribing systems within single hospital organisations

    BACKGROUND: A previous census of electronic prescribing (EP) systems in England showed that more than half of hospitals with EP reported more than one EP system within the same hospital. Our objectives were to describe the rationale for having multiple EP systems within a single hospital, and to explore perceptions of stakeholders about the advantages and disadvantages of multiple systems including any impact on patient safety. METHODS: Hospitals were selected from previous census respondents. A decision matrix was developed to achieve a maximum variation sample, and snowball sampling used to recruit stakeholders of different professional backgrounds. We then used an a priori framework to guide and analyse semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Ten participants, comprising pharmacists and doctors and a nurse, were interviewed from four hospitals. The findings suggest that use of multiple EP systems was not strategically planned. Three co-existing models of EP systems adoption in hospitals were identified: organisation-led, clinician-led and clinical network-led, which may have contributed to multiple systems use. Although there were some perceived benefits of multiple EP systems, particularly in niche specialities, many disadvantages were described. These included issues related to access, staff training, workflow, work duplication, and system interfacing. Fragmentation of documentation of the patient's journey was a major safety concern. DISCUSSION: The complexity of EP systems' adoption and deficiencies in IT strategic planning may have contributed to multiple EP systems use in the NHS. In the near to mid-term, multiple EP systems may remain in place in many English hospitals, which may create challenges to quality and patient safety.Peer reviewe

    Differential Cross Sections for Electron Capture from Helium by 25- to 100-keV Incident Protons

    Experimentally and theoretically determined differential cross sections are reported for electron capture in collisions of protons with helium atoms for incident proton energies of 25, 30, 50, and 100 keV and for center-of-mass scattering angles of 0.0 to 2.0 mrad. The magnitudes of the experimentally determined differential cross sections decrease from 10-10 to 10-12 cm2/sr within the 0.0-0.8-mrad range of the center-of-mass scattering angle. At approximately 0.8 mrad a distinct change in the slope of the differential cross section is observed. The experimental results which are for capture into all bound states of hydrogen are compared with the theoretical results of a calculation for capture into the ground state using the two-state two-center atomic expansion method in the eikonal approximation. Good agreement between the theoretical and the experimental results is obtained with a static potential which accounts for screening of the helium nucleus by a single passive electron
