Solar Models of Low Neutrino-Counting Rate: The Central Black Hole

    Get PDF
Partial evolutionary sequences have been calculated for several solar models with central black holes of the order of one hundred-thousandth of a solar mass. If these are assumed to radiate their Eddington-limiting luminosity, the central temperature is depressed to the extent that the predicted count rate for the Cl-36 solar neutrino experiment nears the current upper limit of 1 SNU. This occurs when the auxiliary energy source provides about half of the solar luminosity. Count rates below this limit would result from an even larger black-hole luminosity. Consequences for stellar evolution of the occasional presence of black holes inside normal stars are discussed

Solar Models of Low Neutrino-Counting Rate: The Depleted Maxwellian Tail

    Get PDF
Evolutionary sequences for the sun are presented which confirm that the Cl-37 neutrino counting rate will be greatly reduced if the high-energy tail of the Maxwellian distribution of relative energies is progressively depleted. Thermonuclear reaction rates and pressure are reevaluated for a distribution function modified by the correction factor suggested by Clayton (1974), and the effect of the results on solar models calculated with a simple Henyey code is discussed. It is shown that if the depletion is characterized by a certain exponential dependence on the distribution function, the counting rate will fall below 1 SNU for a distribution function of not less than 0.01. Suggestions are made for measuring the distribution function in the sun by means of neutrino spectroscopy and photography

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials' Diagnostic Accuracy for Hearing Loss: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Microvascular decompression (MVD) utilizes brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) intraoperative monitoring to reduce the risk of iatrogenic hearing loss. Studies report varying efficacy and hearing loss rates during MVD with intraoperative monitoring. Objectives: This study aims to perform a comprehensive review and study of diagnostic accuracy of BAEPs during MVD to predict hearing loss in studies published from January 1984 to December 2013. Methods: The PubMed/MEDLINE and World Science databases were searched. Studies performed MVD for trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm, glossopharyngeal neuralgia or geniculate neuralgia and monitored intraoperative BAEPs to prevent hearing loss. Retrospectively, BAEP parameters were compared with postoperative hearing. The diagnostic accuracy of significant change in BAEPs, which includes loss of response, was tested using summary receiver operative curve and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR). Results: A total of 13 studies were included in the analysis with a total of 2,540 cases. Loss of response pooled sensitivity, specificity, and DOR with 95% confidence interval being 74% (60–84%), 98% (88–100%), and 69.3 (18.2–263%), respectively. The similar significant change results were 88% (77–94%), 63% (40–81%), and 9.1 (3.9–21.6%). Conclusion: Patients with hearing loss after MVD are more likely to have shown loss of BAEP responses intraoperatively. Loss of responses has high specificity in evaluating hearing loss. Patients undergoing MVD should have BAEP monitoring to prevent hearing loss

Observations of Particulates within the North Atlantic Flight Corridor: POLINAT 2, September-October 1997

This paper discusses particulate concentration and size distribution data gathered using the University of Missouri-Rolla Mobile Aerosol Sampling System (UMR-MASS), and used to investigate the southern extent of the eastern end of the North Atlantic Flight Corridor (NAFC) during project Pollution From Aircraft Emissions in the North Atlantic Flight Corridor/Subsonic Assessment (SASS) Ozone and Nitrogen Oxide Experiment (POLINAT 2/SONEX) from September 19 to October 23, 1997. The analysis presented in this paper focuses on the corridor effect, or enhancement of pollutants by jet aircraft combustion events. To investigate the phenomena, both vertical and horizontal profiles of the corridor, and regions immediately adjacent to the corridor, were performed. The profiles showed a time-dependent enhancement of particulates within the corridor, and a nonvolatile (with respect to thermal volatilization at 300° C) aerosol enhancement at corridor altitudes by a factor of 3.6. The southern extent of the North Atlantic Flight Corridor was established from a four flight average of the particulate data and yielded a boundary near 42.5° N during the study period. A size distribution analysis of the nonvolatile particulates revealed an enhancement in the \u3c40 nm particulates for size distributions recorded within the flight corridor
