In this paper, the spectral properties of a class of Jacobi-like operators defined over the sequence space ℓp,(1<p<∞)\ell_{p}, (1<p<\infty) which has a representation of an infinite band matrix where the entries of each non-zero band form a sequence with two limit points are investigated. The idea of compact perturbation is used to study the spectrum. Several spectral subdivisions are obtained. In addition, a few sufficient conditions on the absence of point spectrum over the essential spectrum are also discussed

In re Harrods Ltd.: The Brussels Convention and the Proper Application of Forum Non Conveniens to Non-Contracting States

Although the doctrine of forum non conveniens is unknown in Continental legal systems, Community law does not prevent English courts from preserving their discretion to stay proceedings, in conflicts involving a defendant domiciliary, in favor of more appropriate courts in a non-Contracting State. Where the provisions of the Brussels Convention do not address a legal question, the answer must be sought in the objectives and scheme of the Convention. The English Court of Appeals in Harrods properly understood that Community law does not require ritualistic reliance on the Convention\u27s jurisdiction conferring provisions in cases involving a defendant domiciled in a Contracting State and the jurisdiction of a court in a non-Contracting State

Role of Panchakarma in the management of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - A Review

    Get PDF
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves of the hand, the median nerve is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. In most patients, carpal tunnel syndrome gets worsen over time, so early diagnosis and treatment are important.[1] If CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) left untreated, symptoms can last a long time and get worsen. Carpal tunnel syndrome cannot be compared directly to any of the disease in Ayurveda. But to some extend we can compare CTS to Jhinjhini Vata described in Chakradatta.[2] And in later stage when CTS is left untreated the pain and numbness radiates from hand to forearm and arm, at that stage we can compared it with Vishwachi (Brachial neuralgia)

Cardiotoxicity is an imperative issue in the assessment of heavy metal consumption and inorganic arsenic (As). These have a cardiotoxic effect which is evaluated by biochemical, and oxidative-antioxidant tests, and by the Nrf2- HO-1 pathway. Dried ginger powder is recognized for its efficient antioxidant activities and as a protector of the cardiovascular system from toxic damage caused by heavy metals. However, the possible function of ginger against As in heart via heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is unclear. A total of 120 White Pekin ducks were randomly distributed into groups comprising 24 birds in each. Each group comprised 3 replicates having 8 birds in each replicate. The time period of this study was 90 days. The groups were the control [Group I] whereas groups II to IV were fed a basal diet including arsenic at 28 mg/L. Dried ginger powder as an ameliorative agent was mixed with the basal diet and fed at 0.1, 0.3 and 1 g/kg feed to groups III, IV and V, respectively. In the current experiment, dried ginger powder decreased As-induced reactive oxygen species (ROSs) production, oxidative injury and pathological modifications. In addition, cardiac dysfunction factors, intracellular calcium (Ca2+), As accumulation and cAMP deficiency levels were noticed in ducks; these alternations were attenuated by ginger. Furthermore, ginger significantly altered the down regulation of both HO-1 and Nrf2 gene expressions caused by As. Thus, the proven protective role of ginger against As-induced cardiotoxicity may be a consequence of the maintenance of redox homeostasis, i.e. the Nrf2-HO-1 pathway and by enabling As efflux.

Neural network predictive control of a heat exchanger

International audienceThe study attempts to show that using the neural network predictive control (NNPC) structure for control of thermal processes can lead to energy savings. The advantage of the NNPC is that it is not a linear-model-based strategy and the control input constraints are directly included into the synthesis. In the designed approach, the neural network is used as a nonlinear process model to predict the future behaviour of the controlled process with distributed parameters. The predictive control strategy is used to calculate optimal control inputs. The efficiency of the described control approach is verified by simulation experiments and a tubular heat exchanger is chosen as a controlled process. The control objective is to keep the temperature of the heated outlet stream at a desired value and minimize the energy consumption. The NNPC of the heat exchanger is compared with classical PID control. Comparison of the simulation results obtained using NNPC and those obtained by classical PID control demonstrates the effectiveness and superiority of the NNPC because of smaller consumption of heating medium

    Ionic liquids at electrified interfaces

    Get PDF
Until recently, “room-temperature” (<100–150 °C) liquid-state electrochemistry was mostly electrochemistry of diluted electrolytes(1)–(4) where dissolved salt ions were surrounded by a considerable amount of solvent molecules. Highly concentrated liquid electrolytes were mostly considered in the narrow (albeit important) niche of high-temperature electrochemistry of molten inorganic salts(5-9) and in the even narrower niche of “first-generation” room temperature ionic liquids, RTILs (such as chloro-aluminates and alkylammonium nitrates).(10-14) The situation has changed dramatically in the 2000s after the discovery of new moisture- and temperature-stable RTILs.(15, 16) These days, the “later generation” RTILs attracted wide attention within the electrochemical community.(17-31) Indeed, RTILs, as a class of compounds, possess a unique combination of properties (high charge density, electrochemical stability, low/negligible volatility, tunable polarity, etc.) that make them very attractive substances from fundamental and application points of view.(32-38) Most importantly, they can mix with each other in “cocktails” of one’s choice to acquire the desired properties (e.g., wider temperature range of the liquid phase(39, 40)) and can serve as almost “universal” solvents.(37, 41, 42) It is worth noting here one of the advantages of RTILs as compared to their high-temperature molten salt (HTMS)(43) “sister-systems”.(44) In RTILs the dissolved molecules are not imbedded in a harsh high temperature environment which could be destructive for many classes of fragile (organic) molecules
