Is emamectin benzoate effective against the different stages of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)?

polyphagous pest in greenhouses and open fields worldwide and also a main problem
in sweet pepper greenhouses. The effectiveness of the pesticide emamectin benzoate was tested in the laboratory on different stages of S. exigua using different concentrations and uptake routes. After dipping young (48-h-old) S. exigua eggs in emamectin benzoate at 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg/L a.i. the chemical did not exhibit any ovicidal activity. There was, however, progressive neonate mortality at all concentrations,
culminating at 72 hours after hatching, when 100% of the larvae from the treated young
eggs died. Second and fourth instar S. exigua larvae did not exhibit significant mortality when exposed to the inert surfaces which were treated. In contrast, ingesting a diet contaminated with 0.5 mg/L a.i. of emamectin benzoate caused 100% mortality in L2 and L4 larvae 24 and 72 hours after ingestion, respectively. The LC50 value of the compound against L4 larvae that fed on sprayed sweet pepper leaves for 24 hours was 0.81 mg/L a.i..
When adults were fed on a solution of 0.5 mg/L a.i., there was a reduction in the female and male lifespan of 29.3% and 55.3%, respectively. Fecundity was reduced by more than 99%. These data suggest that emamectin benzoate is not only a useful insecticide when ingested by beet armyworm larvae but it also has ovolarvicidal and adult activity.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovatio
A near-IR line of Mn I as a diagnostic tool of the average magnetic energy in the solar photosphere
We report on spectropolarimetric observations of a near-IR line of Mn I
located at 15262.702 A whose intensity and polarization profiles are very
sensitive to the presence of hyperfine structure. A theoretical investigation
of the magnetic sensitivity of this line to the magnetic field uncovers several
interesting properties. The most important one is that the presence of strong
Paschen-Back perturbations due to the hyperfine structure produces an intensity
line profile whose shape changes according to the absolute value of the
magnetic field strength. A line ratio technique is developed from the intrinsic
variations of the line profile. This line ratio technique is applied to
spectropolarimetric observations of the quiet solar photosphere in order to
explore the probability distribution function of the magnetic field strength.
Particular attention is given to the quietest area of the observed field of
view, which was encircled by an enhanced network region. A detailed theoretical
investigation shows that the inferred distribution yields information on the
average magnetic field strength and the spatial scale at which the magnetic
field is organized. A first estimation gives ~250 G for the mean field strength
and a tentative value of ~0.45" for the spatial scale at which the observed

Mid-infrared imaging- and spectro-polarimetric subarcsecond observations of NGC 1068
We present sub-arcsecond 7.513 m imaging- and spectro-polarimetric
observations of NGC 1068 using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio
CANARIAS. At all wavelengths, we find:
(1) A 90 60 pc extended polarized feature in the northern ionization
cone, with a uniform 44 polarization angle. Its polarization
arises from dust and gas emission in the ionization cone, heated by the active
nucleus and jet, and further extinguished by aligned dust grains in the host
galaxy. The polarization spectrum of the jet-molecular cloud interaction at
24 pc from the core is highly polarized, and does not show a silicate
feature, suggesting that the dust grains are different from those in the
interstellar medium.
(2) A southern polarized feature at 9.6 pc from the core. Its
polarization arises from a dust emission component extinguished by a large
concentration of dust in the galaxy disc. We cannot distinguish between dust
emission from magnetically aligned dust grains directly heated by the jet close
to the core, and aligned dust grains in the dusty obscuring material
surrounding the central engine. Silicate-like grains reproduce the polarized
dust emission in this feature, suggesting different dust compositions in both
ionization cones.
(3) An upper limit of polarization degree of 0.3 per cent in the core. Based
on our polarization model, the expected polarization of the obscuring dusty
material is 0.1 per cent in the 813 m wavelength range. This
low polarization may be arising from the passage of radiation through aligned

On the solution of a supersymmetric model of correlated electrons
We consider the exact solution of a model of correlated electrons based on
the superalgebra . The corresponding Bethe ansatz equations have an
interesting form. We derive an expression for the ground state energy at half
filling. We also present the eigenvalue of the transfer matrix commuting with

Time-Dependent Behavior of Linear Polarization in Unresolved Photospheres, With Applications for The Hanle Effect
Aims: This paper extends previous studies in modeling time varying linear
polarization due to axisymmetric magnetic fields in rotating stars. We use the
Hanle effect to predict variations in net line polarization, and use geometric
arguments to generalize these results to linear polarization due to other
mechanisms. Methods: Building on the work of Lopez Ariste et al., we use simple
analytic models of rotating stars that are symmetric except for an axisymmetric
magnetic field to predict the polarization lightcurve due to the Hanle effect.
We highlight the effects for the variable line polarization as a function of
viewing inclination and field axis obliquity. Finally, we use geometric
arguments to generalize our results to linear polarization from the weak
transverse Zeeman effect. Results: We derive analytic expressions to
demonstrate that the variable polarization lightcurve for an oblique magnetic
rotator is symmetric. This holds for any axisymmetric field distribution and
arbitrary viewing inclination to the rotation axis. Conclusions: For the
situation under consideration, the amplitude of the polarization variation is
set by the Hanle effect, but the shape of the variation in polarization with
phase depends largely on geometrical projection effects. Our work generalizes
the applicability of results described in Lopez Ariste et al., inasmuch as the
assumptions of a spherical star and an axisymmetric field are true, and
provides a strategy for separating the effects of perspective from the Hanle

3D reconstruction of syn-tectonic strata deposited during the inversion of salt-related structures : insights from the Llert syncline (South-central Pyrenees)
The Llert syncline is located in the South-central Pyrenees, between the eastern termination of the EW-trending Cotiella Basin and the north-western limb of the NS-trending Turbón-Serrado fold system. The Cotiella Basin is an inverted upper Coniacian-lower Santonian salt-floored post-rift extensional basin developed along the northern Iberian rift system. The Turbón-Serrado fold system consists of upper Santonian - Maastrichtian contractional salt-cored anticlines developed along an inverted transfer zone of the Pyrenean rift system. Based on field research, this paper presents a 3D reconstruction of the Llert syncline in order to further constrain the transition between these oblique salt-related structures. Our results suggest that the evolution of the Llert syncline was mainly controlled by tectonic shortening related to the tectonic inversion of the Cotiella Basin synchronously to the growth of the Turbón-Serrado detachment anticline, and by the pre-compressional structural framework of the Pyrenean rift system. Bycatch of the European purse-seine tuna fishery in the Atlantic Ocean for the period 2010-2016
This paper presents an update for the period 2010-2016 of the bycatch estimations for the European tuna purse seine fishery operating in the Atlantic Ocean. Bycatch data were collected by observers onboard. Observer coverage increased progressively from 15 trips in 2010, to 114 and 107 trips in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Bycatch data, as collected by the observers, were stratified by quarter and fishing mode (free school and floating object sets). The ratio of total to observed catches of the target species (skipjack, bigeye and yellowfin tunas) in each stratum was then used as raising factor. The average of the annual total bycatch estimated for the studied period was 9,515 t. Tunas (neritic tunas and small size tunas) represent the major part of the bycatch, followed by fin fish, sharks, billfishes, rays and turtles.En prens
Mechano-Optical Analysis of Single Cells with Transparent Microcapillary Resonators
The study of biophysical properties of single cells is becoming increasingly relevant in cell biology and pathology. The measurement and tracking of magnitudes such as cell stiffness, morphology, and mass or refractive index have brought otherwise inaccessible knowledge about cell physiology, as well as innovative methods for high-throughput label-free cell classification. In this work, we present hollow resonator devices based on suspended glass microcapillaries for the simultaneous measurement of single-cell buoyant mass and reflectivity with a throughput of 300 cells/minute. In the experimental methodology presented here, both magnitudes are extracted from the devices' response to a single probe, a focused laser beam that enables simultaneous readout of changes in resonance frequency and reflected optical power of the devices as cells flow within them. Through its application to MCF-7 human breast adenocarcinoma cells and MCF-10A nontumorigenic cells, we demonstrate that this mechano-optical technique can successfully discriminate pathological from healthy cells of the same tissue type
