    Enhancing station level Direct-Demand models with Multi-Scalar accessibility indicators

    Direct-demand models (DDM) are increasingly being used for a diversity of transit research and practice purposes. Yet few station-level DDM studies have explored the use of composite indicators of metropolitan accessibility in predicting demand. After all, provision of access to metropolitan destinations is one of the main goals of rapid-transit systems. Furthermore, to this author’s knowledge no study has explored potential interactions with local-level accessibility indicators that are typically included in station level transit DDMs. This study explores these possibilities and uses Los Angeles multimodal rapid-transit network as a representative case study of a system that operates in a dispersed agglomeration where multiple sub-centers are linked. Multi-level generalized linear models were implemented where key predictors, including stations\u27 metropolitan- and a local-accessibility indicators are regressed onto average weekday boardings. Furthermore, more general accessibility constructs were developed via EFA and implemented in models; and parameters non-stationarity was assessed via geographically weighted regressions. Results indicate that nodal metropolitan accessibility is a significant predictor of patronage in LA’s rapid-transit network, and that its interaction with local-accessibility amplifies boardings and improves DDM models’ explanatory power. More general constructs of accessibility at metropolitan and local-scale were derived via EFA and these resulted in a more parsimonious model with equal predictive power. Land-use and transit planners would benefit from including an accessibility lens in their DDM modeling. Practical applications of these type of models include TOD scenario planning, comparative route alignment studies, system expansion studies, and for didactic purposes given the ability of accessibility measures to capture land-use/transportation interactions

    Expansion of the geographic range of Cyatta abscondita Sosa-Calvo et al., 2013 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

    The presence of the recently described fungus-farming ant genus and species Cyatta abscondita is reported in the northwestern region of Misiones Province in Argentina. A single worker of C. abscondita was collected in a pitfall trap in a mature plantation of Pinus taeda in the Atlantic Forest biome.     Streetcars and light rail services serve different rider markets in American cities

    The proliferation of streetcar projects in US cities is one of the most significant transportation developments of recent years, yet little is known about the factors that contribute to streetcar ridership or whether these factors differ from those related to light rail use. Using statistical models, Luis Enrique Ramos-Santiago and Jeffrey Brown examine differences in the factors related to ridership on US streetcar and light rail systems. They find that there are important differences in the role that service characteristics, and socioeconomic and land use factors have on streetcars versus light-rail ridership, suggesting that the two modes of transport serve distinct rider markets within the metropolitan transportation network

Tales posiciones son discutidas en el presente artículo, a partir de lo cual se propone una manera de abordar la planificación teniendo en cuenta la coherencia necesaria con los fundamentos del entrenamiento en la infancia, con sus objetivos y con la necesaria promoción del desarrollo integral a través de la práctica deportiva. Se asume una nominación especial para la planificación periódica y cíclica y, además, orientaciones para la estructuración del plan anual

    Is trouble brewing for EMEs?

    Financial stability discussions have mainly revolved around the degree of leverage in financial institutions. Yet, some authors have argued that there might be mechanisms associated with unleveraged institutions that could entail financial instability. We aim to shed light on the possible presence of run-like dynamics in the bond fund flows to and from a group of Emerging Market Economies (EMEs). We examine some of the US monetary policy's implications on these dynamics. As argued, e.g., in Feroli et al. (2014), given the type of incentives many funds face, run-like dynamics might take place, although such funds are mostly unleveraged. We find evidence of the presence of runlike dynamics in the bond flows in several EMEs. We also find evidence that changes in US monetary policy affect such dynamics. Evidently, run-like dynamics could potentially take place in the future

    This paper presents some initiatives of government-to-business in Brazil: The Sped and its project called eSocial. The Sped Fiscal is the Brazilian Public Digital Bookkeeping System and it can be considered an innovation in the relation between the government and the corporate taxpayers, especially in the informatization area. In this research, we explain how it works and its regulatory legislation. After that, we show some benefits of this system. The eSocial Project is the Digital Bookkeeping System of Tax, Social Security and Labor Obligations which is integrated to the Sped Fiscal system.     Modelling and optimization of the processing of a healthy snack bar made of grape and tomato pomaces

    A snack made of 36% by-products of grape and tomato pomaces was developed, also including other ingredients such as oats, chia, quinoa, honey, and peanut butter. The recipe was defined as tasty and healthy by a focus group. The snack was produced by using forced air at three different drying temperatures (50 °C, 60 °C and 70 °C). The Newton, Page, Henderson & Pabis, and Midil-li-Kucuk models fit the drying curves well. The average values for the Newton’s model drying constants were: k50= 2.71x10-1 ± 3x10-3 min-1; k60= 2. 76x10-1 ± 4x10-3 min-1 and k70= 3.91x10-1 ± 8x10-3 min-1; at 50 °C, 60 °C and 70 °C, respectively. The product’s quality was assessed over storage, regarding water activity and texture (hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness and resilience). The three tested processing temperatures did not influence the final product’s quality differently. Since there are no significant differences between initial and final water activity and texture attributes for any temperature, and they were mainly unaltered over storage, the snack bar was considered stable during this period.
