    Software-driven definition of virtual testbeds to validate emergent network technologies

    This paper is an extended version of our paper published in XIII Jornadas de Ingeniería Telemática (JITEL 2017), Valencia, Spain, 27–29 September 2017, “Definición de Testbeds Virtualizados Utilizando Perfiles de Actividad de Red”The lack of privileged access to emergent and operational deployments is one of the key matters during validation and testing of novel telecommunication systems and technologies. This matter jeopardizes the repeatability of experiments, which results in burdens for innovation and research in these areas. In this light, we present a method and architecture to make the software-driven definition of virtual testbeds easier. As distinguishing features, our proposal can mimic operational deployments by using high-dimensional activity patterns. These activity patterns shape the effect of a control module that triggers agents for the generation of network traffic. This solution exploits the capabilities of network emulation and virtualization systems, which nowadays can be easily deployed in commodity servers. With this, we accomplish a reproducible definition of realistic experimental conditions and the introduction of real agent implementations in a cost-effective fashion. We evaluate our solution in a case study that is comprised of the validation of a network-monitoring tool for Voice over IP (VoIP) deployments.     Perturbações da personalidade : Concordância entre diferentes metodologias classificativas

    Dissertação de Mestrado apresentada ao ISPA - Instituto UniversitárioO crescente desenvolvimento de instrumentos destinados à avaliação das Perturbações da Personalidade tem levado ao desenvolvimento de novas abordagens diagnósticas, nomeadamente através de provas projetivas como seja o T.A.T. (Thematic Apperception Test). Com o presente estudo pretendeu-se avaliar a validade e fiabilidade do sistema de cotações do T.A.T. pelo S.C.O.R.S. (Social Cognitions and Object Relations Scale), como um instrumento de classificação diagnóstica das Perturbações da Personalidade, que se baseia em dimensões relevantes das teorias psicanalíticas, nomeadamente nas respeitantes aos modelos de relações de objeto. Participaram 40 sujeitos divididos em dois grupos, sendo 20 utentes do Hospital de Dia do Serviço de Psiquiatria do Centro Hospitalar Lisboa-Norte, Hospital de Santa Maria e 20 sujeitos normativos. Como instrumentos foram utilizadas cinco pranchas do T.A.T cujas narrativas foram cotadas com o sistema S.C.O.R.S. por três cotadores independentes e o inventário de autopreenchimento M.C.M.I.-III. Estes sistemas permitem avaliar de forma independente vários níveis de funcionamento da personalidade. Verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os dois grupos (Grupo Clínico e Grupo Normativo), tendo os resultados sido favoráveis ao Grupo Normativo em ambos os instrumentos. Verificaram-se correlações altamente significativas entre os valores obtidos em cada uma das escalas do S.C.O.R.S. e os cartões do T.A.T., bem como entre estes dois e alguns Padrões de Personalidade avaliados pelo M.C.M.I.-III. Concluiu-se, assim, que a combinação da informação obtida através de ambos os instrumentos potencia o acesso à estrutura e organização psicológicas inerentes a cada Padrão da Personalidade, mais do que através de cada um separadamente.ABSTRACT______The increasing development of instruments aimed to evaluate Personality Disorders has led to the development of new diagnostic approaches, namely through projective measures such as the T.A.T. (Thematic Apperception Test). The aim of the present study was to assess the validity of the T.A.T.'s scoring system through S.C.O.R.S. (Social Cognitions and Object Relations Scale), as an instrument of diagnostic classification of Personality Disorders, which is based on relevant dimensions of the psychoanalytic theories, namely those relative to the object relations' models. Forty subjects split into group participated, being twenty of them patients of the Day Hospital of the Psychiatric Service of the Centro Hospitalar Lisboa-Norte, Hospital de Santa Maria and twenty normative subjects. As instruments, five T.A.T. cards whose narratives were scored with the S.C.O.R.S. system by three independent scorers and the self-report inventory M.C.M.I.- III. These systems allow to individually discriminate several levels of personality functioning. Statistically significant differences were found between the two groups (Clinical Group and Normative Group), being the results favorable to the Normative Group in both instruments. Highly significant correlations were found between the values obtained in each S.C.O.R.S.' scale and T.A.T. cards, as well as between the last two and some Personality Patterns assessed by the M.C.M.I.-III. Therefore, it can be concluded that the combination of the information obtained through both instruments maximizes the access to the psychological structure and organization inherent to each Personality Pattern, even more than through each one separately

    Estimation of the parameters of token-buckets in multi-hop environments

    Bandwidth verification in shaping scenarios receives much attention of both operators and clients because of its impact on Quality of Service (QoS). As a result, measuring shapers’ parameters, namely the Committed Information Rate (CIR), Peak Information Rate (PIR) and Maximum Burst Size (MBS), is a relevant issue when it comes to assess QoS. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm, TBCheck, which serves to accurately measure such parameters with minimal intrusiveness. These measurements are the cornerstone for the validation of Service Level Agreements (SLA) with multiple shaping elements along an end-to-end path. As a further outcome of this measurement method, we define a formal taxonomy of multi-hop shaping scenarios. A thorough performance evaluation covering the latter taxonomy shows the advantages of TBCheck compared to other tools in the state of the art, yielding more accurate results even in the presence of cross-traffic. Additionally, our findings show that MBS estimation is unfeasible when the link load is high, regardless the measurement technique, because the token-bucket will always be empty.     Ludwig Wittgenstein. Parcours architectural d’un philosophe analytique

    [EN] The architectural condition and its connotations in other areas of culture, such as analytical philosophy, is a challenge that can be observed through the figure of the intellectual from 19th century Vienna, Ludwig Wittgenstein. His obsessive dedication, a manifest disposition in any work that occupies his time, would lead to a clear foray into the profession of architect, among other activities. His imprint was exposed in his work and perpetuated through the iconic Stonborough house, built for his sister in Vienna. In it, he will culminate a work that testifies to the mastery of interior spatial proportion, rationality and control over architectural detail to its last consequences. His masterpiece “Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus” (1921), together with “Being and Time” by Martin Heidegger (1927), constitute the two referents of Western thought of the last century. In it, he investigates the exercise carried out by the philosopher, in the context of architecture. He addresses the exact representation of the world through the application of a deductive logic method, with properly ordered propositions with which to structure what for him constitutes the essential event of the architectural “fact.”[CA] La condició arquitectònica i les seues connotacions en altres àmbits de la cultura, com el de la filosofia analítica, suposa repte divisible a través de la figura de l’intel·lectual de la Viena del segle XIX, Ludwig Wittgenstein. La seua dedicació obsessiva, tarannà manifest en qualsevol labor que ocupara el seu temps, derivaria, entre altres activitats, en una clara incursió en la professió d’arquitecte. La seua empremta queda exposada en un breu itinerari de la seua obra la qual queda perpetuada a través de la icònica casa Stonborough, construïda per a la seua germana a Viena. En ella culminarà una obra en la qual es testimonia el domini de la proporció espacial interior, la racionalitat i control sobre el detall arquitectònic portat a les seues últimes conseqüències. A partir de l’anàlisi de la seua obra mestra el Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), que al costat de Ser i Temps de Martin Heidegger (1927) constitueixen els dos referents del pensament occidental del passat segle, s’indaga sobre l’exercici que desenvolupa el filòsof, en el context de l’arquitectura, sobre la representació exacta del món mitjançant l’aplicació d’un mètode de lògica deductiva, amb proposicions degudament ordenades amb les quals estructurar el que per a ell constitueix l’esdeveniment essencial del, en aquest cas, “fet” arquitectònic.[ES] La condición arquitectónica y sus connotaciones en otros ámbitos de la cultura, como el de la filosofía analítica, supone reto divisable a través de la figura del intelectual de la Viena del siglo XIX, Ludwig Wittgenstein. Su dedicación obsesiva, talante manifiesto en cualquier labor que ocupara su tiempo, derivaría, entre otras actividades, en una clara incursión en la profesión de arquitecto. Su impronta queda expuesta en un breve itinerario de su obra la cual queda perpetuada a través de la icónica casa Stonborough, construida para su hermana en Viena. En ella culminará una obra en la que se testimonia el dominio de la proporción espacial interior, la racionalidad y control sobre el detalle arquitectónico llevado a sus últimas consecuencias. A partir del análisis de su obra maestra el Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), que junto a Ser y Tiempo de Martin Heidegger (1927) constituyen los dos referentes del pensamiento occidental del pasado siglo, se indaga sobre el ejercicio que desarrolla el filósofo, en el contexto de la arquitectura, sobre la representación exacta del mundo mediante la aplicación de un método de lógica deductiva, con proposiciones debidamente ordenadas con las que estructurar lo que para él constituye el acontecimiento esencial del, en este caso, “hecho” arquitectónico.[FR] La condition architecturale et ses connotations dans d’autres domaines de la culture, comme celui de la philosophie analytique, suppose un enjeu aperçu à travers la figure de l’intellectuel de Vienne du XIXe siècle Ludwig Wittgenstein. Son dévouement obsessif, attribut manifeste dans tous les travaux qu’il a entreprit, déboucha, parmi d’autres activités, sur une évidente incursion dans la profession d’architecte. Son empreinte est exposée dans un bref parcours de son oeuvre, perpétuée moyennant l’iconique maison Stonborough, construite pour sa soeur à Vienne.     Dissertação de Mestrado em Prospecção e Avaliação de Recursos Geológicos apresentada à Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do PortoO presente trabalho foi integrado num projecto multidisciplinar designado por ProjectoPOCTI/40813/CTA/2001 Evolução Varisca de um segmento Crustal Ibérico.Modelação Litogeoquímica e Estrutural LITHOSTRUMODEL, e teve comoprincipal objectivo, utilizar como guias de prospecção geológica, contributoscartográficos, tectono-litoestratigráficos, metamórficos e mineralógicos elitogeoquímicos, de modo a compreender a relação dos sectores mineralizados com oencaixante e estabelecer correlações com áreas vizinhas.A área estudada compreende uma faixa de metassedimentos enquadrados pelos maciçosgraníticos de Montalegre e Chaves, que está inserida nas unidades do DomínioEstrutural de Carrazedo pertencentes ao Parautóctone da Zona Galiza-Média e Trás-os-Montes (ZGMTM), com idades Ordovícico-Silúrico e provavelmente Devónico.A faixa de metassedimentos foi designada por rochas silúricas metamorfizadas compreendendo os xistos metamórficos (no sector a SW) e o complexo de xistos egranitos (no sector a NE) (Teixeira et al, 1974). Estes metassedimentos foramenglobados na Formação Pelito-Grauváquica do Complexo Parautóctone, com idadeatribuída do Silúrico inferior, segundo a Carta Geológica de Portugal à escala1:200.000, Folha 2 (2000).A cartografia da área estudada permitiu individualizar duas unidades litoestratigráficas:Unidade NE constituída por metassedimentos quartzo-pelíticos e listrados quartzofeldspáticos(LQF) com algumas intercalações quartzíticas, intruídos pelas pequenasmanchas graníticas e filões aplito-pegmatíticos.Unidade SW constituída por micaxistos com porfiroblastos de andaluzites, por vezesgranatíferos, com intercalações de quartzofilitos, liditos e xistos negros, e localmenterochas calco-silicatadas, sendo a sequência intruída por esporádicos filões aplitopegmatíticos,tendo alguns deles sido alvo de exploração mineira (Sn-W).A estrutura das duas unidades tem um carácter isoclinal marcado pela foliação principal(Sn//S0): N120;70 SW.     Origin and Control Strategies of Biofilms in the Cultural Heritage

    Biodeterioration is defined as the undesirable change in the properties of materials caused by the activity of biological agents. This process is complex and involves alterations in the physicochemical and mechanical properties by the action of organisms and depends on the microorganisms involved, type of substrate, and environmental conditions. The biodeterioration of cultural heritage is the physical or chemical damage caused by microorganisms on objects, monuments, or buildings that belong to the cultural heritage. Among the main materials that can be affected are: stone, metal, ceramic, polymers, and other materials. Among the main undesirable effects to these materials are: discoloration, dissolution, rupture, and efflorescence among others. Biofilms represent the usual form of growth of bacteria and consist of communities of microorganisms that grow attached to an inert surface or a living tissue, surrounded by an extracellular matrix that they themselves synthesize. The importance of biodeterioration by biofilms is mainly related to changes in pH values, ionic concentrations, oxide-reduction reactions in the biofilm thickness, and in the interface with the substrate and enzymatic degradation.     Natural language processing for web browsing analytics: Challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities

    In an Internet arena where the search engines and other digital marketing firms’ revenues peak, other actors still have open opportunities to monetize their users’ data. After the convenient anonymization, aggregation, and agreement, the set of websites users visit may result in exploitable data for ISPs. Uses cover from assessing the scope of advertising campaigns to reinforcing user fidelity among other marketing approaches, as well as security issues. However, sniffers based on HTTP, DNS, TLS or flow features do not suffice for this task. Modern websites are designed for preloading and prefetching some contents in addition to embedding banners, social networks’ links, images, and scripts from other websites. This self-triggered traffic makes it confusing to assess which websites users visited on purpose. Moreover, DNS caches prevent some queries of actively visited websites to be even sent. On this limited input, we propose to handle such domains as words and the sequences of domains as documents. This way, it is possible to identify the visited websites by translating this problem to a text classification context and applying the most promising techniques of the natural language processing and neural networks fields. After applying different representation methods such as TF–IDF, Word2vec, Doc2vec, and custom neural networks in diverse scenarios and with several datasets, we can state websites visited on purpose with accuracy figures over 90%, with peaks close to 100%, being processes that are fully automated and free of any human parametrizationThis research has been partially funded by the Spanish State Research Agency under the project AgileMon (AEI PID2019-104451RBC21) and by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities under the program for the training of university lecturers (Grant number: FPU19/05678

A Hartree-Bose transformation from the spherical to the deformed bosons with charge-dependent parameters is proposed which allows bosonic pair correlations and includes higher angular momentum bosons.     A Big Data system architecture to support the monitoring of paved roads

    Today, everything is connected, including the exchange of data and the generation of new information. As a result, large amounts of data are being collected at an ever-increasing rate and in a variety of forms, a phenomenon now known as Big Data. Recent developments in information and communication technologies are driving the generation of significant amounts of data from multiple sources, namely sensors. In response to these technological advances and data challenges, this paper proposes a Big Data system architecture for paved road monitoring and implements part of this architecture on a section of road in Portugal as a case study. The challenge in the case study architecture is to collect and process sensor data in real time, at a rate of 500 records per second, producing 15 GBytes of data per day, using a real-time data stream for real-time monitoring and a batch data stream for deeper analysis. This allows users to obtain instant updates on road conditions such as the number of vehicles, loads, weather, and pavement temperatures on the road.
