    The scalar scattering of the plane wave by a strictly convex obstacle with impedance boundary conditions is considered. The uniform boundedness of the Total Cross Section for all values of frequencies is proved. The high frequency limit of the Transport Cross Section is founded and presented as a classical functional of the variational theory

    Literature suggests there is a need to hear from children themselves about the quality of healthcare they receive and, although their views are increasingly sought, little is known about children’s definitions of ‘high or low quality care’. This article reports on a participatory, qualitative study that set out to explore with children and young people whether they could be involved in monitoring the quality of hospital care. Nine young people played an active role in the research process, collecting data from an additional 129 participants aged between 9 and 14. Five characteristics of quality care were identified: ‘technical expertise’, ‘friendly staff ’, ‘respect’, ‘choice’ and ‘explanations’

    Analysis of Strong-Coupling Parameters for Superfluid 3He

    Superfluid 3^{3}He experiments show strong deviation from the weak-coupling limit of the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and this discrepancy grows with increasing pressure. Strong-coupling contributions to the quasiparticle interactions are known to account for this effect and they are manifest in the five β\beta-coefficients of the fourth order Ginzburg-Landau free energy terms. The Ginzburg-Landau free energy also has a coefficient gzg_{z} to include magnetic field coupling to the order parameter. From NMR susceptibility experiments, we find the deviation of gzg_{z} from its weak-coupling value to be negligible at all pressures. New results for the pressure dependence of four different combinations of β\beta-coefficients, β\beta_{345}, β\beta_{12}, β\beta_{245}, and β\beta_{5} are calculated and comparison is made with theory.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.     Degradation Kinetics of Lignocellulolytic Enzymes in a Biogas Reactor Using Quantitative Mass Spectrometry

    The supplementation of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes can be used to enhance the performance of biogas production in industrial biogas plants. Since the structural stability of these enzyme preparations is essential for efficient application, reliable methods for the assessment of enzyme stability are crucial. Here, a mass-spectrometric-based assay was established to monitor the structural stability of enzymes, i.e., the structural integrity of these proteins, in anaerobic digestion (AD). The analysis of extracts of Lentinula edodes revealed the rapid degradation of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes, with an approximate half-life of 1.5 h. The observed low structural stability of lignocellulose-degrading enzymes in AD corresponded with previous results obtained for biogas content. The established workflow can be easily adapted for the monitoring of other enzyme formulations and provides a platform for evaluating the effects of enzyme additions in AD, together with a characterization of the biochemical methane potential used in order to determine the biodegradability of organic substrates

    The Mt John University Observatory Search For Earth-mass Planets In The Habitable Zone Of Alpha Centauri

    The "holy grail" in planet hunting is the detection of an Earth-analog: a planet with similar mass as the Earth and an orbit inside the habitable zone. If we can find such an Earth-analog around one of the stars in the immediate solar neighborhood, we could potentially even study it in such great detail to address the question of its potential habitability. Several groups have focused their planet detection efforts on the nearest stars. Our team is currently performing an intensive observing campaign on the alpha Centauri system using the Hercules spectrograph at the 1-m McLellan telescope at Mt John University Observatory (MJUO) in New Zealand. The goal of our project is to obtain such a large number of radial velocity measurements with sufficiently high temporal sampling to become sensitive to signals of Earth-mass planets in the habitable zones of the two stars in this binary system. Over the past years, we have collected more than 45,000 spectra for both stars combined. These data are currently processed by an advanced version of our radial velocity reduction pipeline, which eliminates the effect of spectral cross-contamination. Here we present simulations of the expected detection sensitivity to low-mass planets in the habitable zone by the Hercules program for various noise levels. We also discuss our expected sensitivity to the purported Earth-mass planet in an 3.24-d orbit announced by Dumusque et al.~(2012).Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the International Journal of Astrobiolog

    Trkalian fields: ray transforms and mini-twistors

    We study X-ray and Divergent beam transforms of Trkalian fields and their relation with Radon transform. We make use of four basic mathematical methods of tomography due to Grangeat, Smith, Tuy and Gelfand-Goncharov for an integral geometric view on them. We also make use of direct approaches which provide a faster but restricted view of the geometry of these transforms. These reduce to well known geometric integral transforms on a sphere of the Radon or the spherical Curl transform in Moses eigenbasis, which are members of an analytic family of integral operators. We also discuss their inversion. The X-ray (also Divergent beam) transform of a Trkalian field is Trkalian. Also the Trkalian subclass of X-ray transforms yields Trkalian fields in the physical space. The Riesz potential of a Trkalian field is proportional to the field. Hence, the spherical mean of the X-ray (also Divergent beam) transform of a Trkalian field over all lines passing through a point yields the field at this point. The pivotal point is the simplification of an intricate quantity: Hilbert transform of the derivative of Radon transform for a Trkalian field in the Moses basis. We also define the X-ray transform of the Riesz potential (of order 2) and Biot-Savart integrals. Then, we discuss a mini-twistor respresentation, presenting a mini-twistor solution for the Trkalian fields equation. This is based on a time-harmonic reduction of wave equation to Helmholtz equation. A Trkalian field is given in terms of a null vector in C3 with an arbitrary function and an exponential factor resulting from this reduction.Comment: 37 pages, http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.482610
