    Mass Exchange Dynamics of Surface and Subsurface Oil in Shallow-Water Transport

    We formulate a model for the mass exchange between oil at and below the sea surface. This is a particularly important aspect of modeling oil spills. Surface and subsurface oil have different chemical and transport characteristics and lumping them together would compromise the accuracy of the resulting model. Without observational or computational constraints, it is thus not possible to quantitatively predict oil spills based upon partial field observations of surface and/or sub-surface oil. The primary challenge in capturing the mass exchange is that the principal mechanisms are on the microscale. This is a serious barrier to developing practical models for oil spills that are capable of addressing questions regarding the fate of oil at the large spatio-temporal scales, as demanded by environmental questions. We use upscaling to propose an environmental-scale model which incorporates the mass exchange between surface and subsurface oil due to oil droplet dynamics, buoyancy effects, and sea surface and subsurface mechanics. While the mass exchange mechanism detailed here is generally applicable to oil transport models, it addresses the modeling needs of a particular to an oil spill model [1]. This transport model is designed to capture oil spills at very large spatio-temporal scales. It accomplishes this goal by specializing to shallow-water environments, in which depth averaging is a perfectly good approximation for the flow, while at the same time retaining mass conservation of oil over the whole oceanic domain.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Probabilistic Measures for Biological Adaptation and Resilience

    The importance of understanding and predicting biological resilience is growing as we become increasingly aware of the consequences of changing climatic conditions. However, various approaches to operationalize resilience have been proposed. Here, we adapt a statistical mechanical framework for the time dependent dynamics of biological systems that offers a powerful conceptualization of systems whose response share similarities with heterogeneous forced/dissipative physical systems. In this framework we are concerned with the dynamics of a probabilistic description of observables. In this study we propose and derive a quantitative measure of adaptive resilience. Unlike more common resilience measures, ours takes into account the variability of the time history of the dynamics and the heterogeneity of the organism. Once a measure of success is proposed it quantifies the degree to which a biological system succeeds to adapt to new conditions after being stressed

    Quasi-switched inverter using space vector pulse width modulation with triangular comparison for photovoltaic applications

    Este trabajo analiza un prototipo para un inversor elevador cuasi-conmutado (qSBI) alimentando una carga resistiva aislada desde una fuente de CC. Se propone el uso de una modulación de ancho de pulso de vectores espaciales (SPWM) con comparación triangular que genera un incremento en el factor de ganancia del qSBI, y se contrasta su desempeño con otro tipo de modulaciones de vectores espaciales, tales como las modulaciones discontinuas. Para verificar la validez de la extensión de rango de tensión en el convertidor qSBI, se desarrolló una plataforma de pruebas semi-personalizada. Esta plataforma utiliza una tarjeta DSP de punto flotante (Analog Devices ADSP-21369) para el procesamiento de las estrategias de control, y una tarjeta de interfaz que incluye un arreglo lógico programable (FPGA) de Xilinx (Spartan-3), que permite desarrollar la modulación sincronizada que el qSBI necesita. Los resultados experimentales demuestran mejoras en el desempeño del convertidor qSBI en cuanto al factor de ganancia, reducción del estrés de voltaje en el capacitor y los perfiles de corriente de entrada. Las estrategias discontinuas de modulación del vector espacial no presentan un buen desempeño cuando se compara con las modulaciones continuas SVPWM o SPWM, ya que los niveles de rizado en las corrientes tomadas del módulo PV son de aproximadamente el doble que en el caso de las técnicas de modulación continuas. Finalmente, el uso del convertidor qSBI como microinversor es puesto en evidencia por dos casos experimentales prácticos de un sistema fotovoltaico PV con un algoritmo de ajuste del máximo punto de potencia (MPPT).This work analyzes a prototype of a quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI) feeding an isolated resistive load from a DC source. The use of spatial vector pulse width modulation (SPWM) with triangular comparison is proposed to increase the qSBI gain factor, and its performance is contrasted with other types of spatial vector modulations, such as discontinuous modulations. To verify the validity of the method for voltage range extension in the qSBI converter, a semi-customized test platform was developed. This platform uses a DSP floating point card (Analog Devices ADSP-21369) for processing and control strategies and an interface card that includes a programmable logic array (FPGA) from Xilinx (Spartan-3), which allows to develop the synchronized modulation qSBI needs. The experimental results show improvements in the performance of the qSBI converter in terms of gain factor, voltage reduction in the capacitor, and input current profiles. Discontinuous space vector modulation strategies do not perform well when compared to continuous SVPWM or SPWM modulations, because the ripple levels in the currents taken from the PV module are approximately twice as great as in continuous modulation techniques. Finally, the usefulness of a qSBI as PV microinverter is confirmed by two practical experimental cases of a PV photovoltaic system with a maximum power point adjustment algorithm (MPPT)

    Renal volume of five-year-old preterm children are not different than full-term controls

    Objective: In previous studies, smaller renal volumes were reported in prematurely born infants, however, these renal volumes were not corrected for body surface area, the main determinant of renal size. Given the rapid growth of the renal cortex after premature birth, the authors hypothesized that corrected volumes would not differ from healthy controls. Methods: Ambispective cohort study with prospective follow-up of prematurely born babies in a large specialized center and retrospectively recruited healthy control group. Children were assessed for renal length and renal volumes at age 5 by three independent ultrasonographers. Detailed anthropometry, blood pressure and renal function were also obtained. Age independent z-scores were calculated for all parameters and compared using descriptive statistics. Results: Eighty-nine premature study participants (median 32 weeks gestational age) and 33 healthy controls (median 38 weeks gestational age) were studied. Study participants did not differ in age, sex, Afro-Colombian descent, height, blood pressure, serum creatinine, or new Schwartz eGFR. Premature study participants had a significantly lower weight (17.65 ± 2.93 kg) than controls (19.05 ± 2.81 kg, p = 0.0072) and lower body surface area. The right renal volumes were significantly smaller (39.4 vs 43.4 mL), but after correction for body surface area, the renal volume and renal length z-scores were identical for both kidneys (mean right kidney -0.707 vs -0.507; mean left kidney -0.498 vs -0.524, respectively). Conclusion: Renal volumes need to be corrected to body surface area. After correction for body surface area, 5-year-old healthy and prematurely born children have comparable renal volumes

    Effect of pretreatment with low-frequency ultrasound on quality parameters in gulupa (Passiflora edulis sims) pulp

    The Gulupa (Passiflora edulis f. edulis Sims) is an expression of South America’s tropics’ biodiversity, and a source of B vitamins and amino acids. It is a climacteric export fruit for which it is necessary to incorporate emerging technologies for its conservation and transport. This work investigated the effect of ultrasound on gulupa pulp and verified the stability of the characters of interest in the shelf life of 20 days. Six treatments and a control sample were used, evaluated in triplicate, and varied in frequency (30 and 40 kHz) with an exposure time of 10, 20, and 30 min. A statistical analysis of unidirectional variances and Dunnett’s test was used. It was found that the ultrasound treatments did not affect the pH or the titratable acidity. Soluble solid results presented a significant increase (p < 0.05) (from 13.4 to 14.8% w/v) in the antioxidant capacity (from 1.13 to 1.54 µmol Trolox Equivalent (TE)/g by the ABTS•+ (2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) Cationic Radical Assay and from 3.3 to 3.7 µmol TE/g by the DPPH· (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazil) Radical Scavenging Assay). During the shelf life, ascorbic acid was the parameter that varied most (p < 0.05). It decreased from 42.7 to 21.6 mg ascorbic acid/100 g of pulp in the control sample. However, a smaller decrease was observed (23.8–24.5 mg ascorbic acid/100 g of pulp) in the 40 kHz treatments. The smallest global color difference (∆E) for the control was found in the 40 kHz treatment at 30 min through the entire shelf life (day 0 to 20).     Short Duration of Antibiotic Therapy in Hospitalized Patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Results from the CAPO International Cohort Study

    Introduction: Experts suggest a short duration of antibiotic therapy (DOT) in responding patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes after hospital discharge among patients treated with short-course antibiotic therapy (SCT) vs. long-course antibiotic therapy (LCT) for CAP. Methods: A secondary analysis of the Community-Acquired Pneumonia Organization (CAPO) database from January 2007 to June 2013 was performed, including hospitalized CAP patients who reached clinical stability within 5 days. Two groups were identified: patients who were treated with antibiotic therapy for a total duration of 5 days or less (SCT Group) vs. longer than 5 days (LCT Group). Rehospitalization and mortality were evaluated at 30 days after discharge. Results: 1,849 patients were enrolled (58% males; median age: 65 years), 179 (10%) were included in the SCT and 1,670 (90%) in the LTC group.     Urinary KIM-1 is not correlated with gestational age among 5-year-old children born prematurely

    BackgroundPreterm birth is associated with decreased nephron endowment. Currently, there is no reliable non-invasive biomarker to identify or monitor decreased nephron number in at-risk patients. Urinary Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1) is a biomarker of acute and chronic renal injury. We measured urinary KIM-1 among a wide array of other potential biomarkers.MethodsWe conducted an ambispective cohort study of 5-years-old children born prematurely and healthy controls identified from city schools. Detailed anthropometrics, renal ultrasound dimensions, and biochemical parameters were measured. Urinary KIM-1 was measured using Luminex® technology. Age independent z-scores were calculated and compared. Spearman correlations were used for estimating the association between measures and KIM-1.ResultsWe enrolled 129 children, 97 (75.2%) born pre-term and 32 (24.8%) healthy controls born at full-term. Pre-term patients had significantly lower weight and body surface area than controls. Pre-term patients and controls did not differ in current age, sex, race, height, blood pressure, urinary sodium, fractional sodium excretion, serum creatinine and estimated GFR. All spearman correlation between KIM-1 and gestational age, renal and serum measurements were weak without statistical significanceConclusionIn 5-year-old children born prematurely, KIM-1 was not correlated with gestational age. Further prospective studies need to confirm this finding
