In this study, the removal capacity of low cost adsorbents during the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) and Congo Red (CR) at different concentrations (50 and 100mg•L-1) was evaluated. These adsorbents were produced from wood wastes (cedar and teak) by chemical activation (ZnCl2). Both studied materials, Activated Cedar (AC) and activated teak (AT) showed a good fit of their experimental data to the pseudo second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacities for AC were 2000.0 and 444.4mg•g-1 for MB and CR, respectively, while for AT, maximum adsorption capacities of 1052.6 and 86.4mg•g-1 were found for MB and CR, respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

Cedarwood (Cedrela Angustifolia) and teak (Tectona Grandis) woods are typically used for furniture manufacture because they have high durability, are light and easy to work. During these manufacturing process, large amount of these wastes is generated causing disposal environmental problems. In this paper, the residual wastes (sawdust) of Cedar (C) and Teak (T) are transformed into an activated material. The chemical composition of both biomass (C and T) was determinate by TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). Activated materials were characterized in surface area following the BET (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller) method, morphology using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and to know their functional groups a FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) analysis was done. Their adsorption capacity was evaluated by removal of Methylene Blue (MB) and Congo Red (CR) from aqueous solutions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

Regulation of ATF3 expression in cardiomyocytes

    No full text
The stress responses of cardiomyocytes are likely to constitute a significant aspect of the development of cardiac pathologies. Oxidative stress is a common theme in the pathophysiology of ischaemic and non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy. On the other hand, hypertrophic agonists (e.g. endothelin-1, ET-1) are important mediators of the hypertrophic response to hemodynamic overloading, and cardiac pathologies such as heart failure are usually preceded by cardiac hypertrophy. Microarray studies indicate that one of the genes most potently induced by H2O2 (as an oxidative stress) or ET-1 in cardiac myocytes is the transcription factor ATF3. This thesis examines the regulation and role of ATF3 in neonatal rat ventricular cardiomyocytes. The increase in expression of ATF3 mRNA was confirmed in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes exposed to H2O2 or ET-1 using RT-PCR and Q-PCR. Using immunoblotting, it was confirmed that H2O2 or ET-1 increased ATF3 protein expression. ATF3 is an immediate early gene since the upregulation of ATF3 mRNA by ET-1 was not inhibited by cycloheximide (20 μM). Upregulation of ATF3 was inhibited by U0126 (10 μM), suggesting that signalling through ERK1/2 (extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2) was required. Other studies suggest that ATF3 downregulates interleukin-6 (IL-6) in human cells. The rat IL-6 promoter possesses an ATF consensus sequence, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) analysis indicated that ET-1 or H2O2 increased the association of ATF3 with the IL-6 promoter. IL-6 mRNA and protein expression was transiently upregulated in cardiomyocytes exposed to H2O2 or ET-1, and this was shown to be an immediate early gene response. Following IL-6 mRNA upregulation, its expression was more rapidly downregulated than that of ATF3. The peak of ATF3 protein expression coincided with the return of IL-6 mRNA to basal levels after stimulation with either ET-1 or H2O2. This suggests that ATF3 operates in a negative feedback loop to downregulate IL-6 mRNA expression in cardiomyocytes. This was confirmed by adenoviral-mediated overexpression of full-length ATF3 antisense RNA, which attenuated ATF3 mRNA and protein expression following stimulation with ET-1. Inhibition of ATF3 expression was associated with superinduction of IL-6 mRNA as shown by Q-PCR. Other potential downstream targets of ATF3 were identified from microarray studies using bioinformatics. Those with ATF/CRE consensus sequences in their promoters included epiregulin and leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) (also shown to be immediate early genes). Epiregulin and LIF mRNA expression was superinduced by ATF3 antisense RNA. Taken together, these experiments indicate that ATF3 operates in a negative feedback loop by downregulating a cluster of immediate early genes induced by ET-1. Thus, ATF3 may play an important role in the establishment and fine-tuning of an organised and compensatory hypertrophic response in the cardiomyocyte secondary to hypertrophic stimulation

Abstract: Movement and force are central concepts of Newtonian Mechanics that are fundamental for the design of mechanisms and processes, and the origin of many concepts in physics. However, teaching them faces up to huge conceptual obstacles that are even more difficult to solve in a countryside environment where students have neither time for homework nor tools like computers or Internet. The present work introduces a didactic proposal for teaching the concepts of force and movement designed for ninth grade students of the I.E. Mortiño School in Isnos (Huila, Colombia). The design emphasizes on qualitative aspects and involves many activities from the rural environment in Isnos that, together with other more universal examples, illustrate fundamental aspects of the concepts of position, velocity and force. The didactic proposal consists of twelve sessions of one hour per week, organized in three sequences: one for position and velocity, one for forces and Newton’s laws of motion and one for friction, all implemented with pre- and posttest. The analysis of the results shows a statistically significant increment of the scores. Actually, the combined scores of the three tests is higher in the posttest for all students. The qualitative description of the implementation also shows a remarkable increase in the interest and motivation by the students, because they discover that the concepts of physics can be found in activities of their own daylife. The strategy constitutes, therefore, a valuable contribution to the teaching of Netwonian Mechanics in countryside environments.Maestrí

The assessment of the sound properties of a performed mu- sical note has been widely studied in the past. Although a consensus exist on what is a good or a bad musical performance, there is not a formal definition of performance tone quality due to its subjectivity. In this study we present a computational approach for the automatic assess- ment of violin sound production. We investigate the correlations among extracted features from audio performances and the perceptual quality of violin sounds rated by listeners using machine learning techniques. The obtained models are used for implementing a real-time feedback learning system
