The relationships of Scytodoidea, including the families Drymusidae, Periegopidae, Scytodidae and Sicariidae, have been contentious for a long time. Here we present a reviewed phylogenetic analysis of scytodoid spiders, emphasizing Periegops, the only genus in the family Periegopidae. In our analysis the Scytodoidea are united by the fusion of the third abdominal entapophyses into a median lobe, the presence of female palpal femoral thorns and associated cheliceral stridulatory ridges, a membranous lobe on the cheliceral promargin, and the loss of minor ampullate gland spigots. A basal split within Scytodoidea defines two monophyletic groups: Sicariidae and a group formed by Scytodidae as the sister group of Periegopidae plus Drymusidae, all united by having bipectinate prolateral claws on tarsi I–II, one major ampullate spigot accompanied by a nubbin, and the posterior median spinnerets with a mesal field of spicules. Periegops is the sister group of Drymusidae, united by the regain of promarginal cheliceral teeth and a triangular cheliceral lamina, which is continuous with the paturon margin.Fil: Labarque, Facundo Martín. Assessment of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method for modeling the startup regime of a Darrieus rotor

In this article, the suitability of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) to predict the dynamic response in the startup process of small-scale Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) was investigated. Using OpenFOAM, numerical simulations have been run to evaluate the regions of the rotor revolution where the prediction of the aerodynamic coefficients is expected to give unreliable results. The qualitative aspects of the prediction of the self-starting of the VAWT for tip speed ratio (λ) ranging from 0 to 3 have been evaluated and to model a more realistic condition, resistive forces acting on the rotor have been implemented. These resistive forces, which are the mechanical friction and the magnetic forces of the generator, were implemented numerically through a viscous damping model and, therefore, a new OpenFOAM library was developed adopting the object-oriented programming methodology as well as the C++ language. From the results, it has been observed that for a λ equal to 0.4 (starting speed), the aerodynamic forces are overestimated for a portion of 82% of the full revolution of the rotor. For a λ equal to 2.70 (steady state), this portion is reduced to 52%. This means that the aerodynamic forces and also the power output are overestimated by a large percentage in a full revolution of the rotor. Therefore, such results allow us to conjecture that RANS modeling may not seem to be an adequate approach to accurately assess the aerodynamic response of VAWTs.Fil: Ramirez, Jose Miguel. © 2020 by the authors.Unspecific peroxygenases (UPOs) are fungal heme-thiolate enzymes able to catalyze a wide range of oxidation reactions, such as peroxidase-like, catalase-like, haloperoxidase-like, and, most interestingly, cytochrome P450-like. One of the most outstanding properties of these enzymes is the ability to catalyze the oxidation a wide range of organic substrates (both aromatic and aliphatic) through cytochrome P450-like reactions (the so-called peroxygenase activity), which involves the insertion of an oxygen atom from hydrogen peroxide. To catalyze this reaction, the substrate must access a channel connecting the bulk solution to the heme group. The composition, shape, and flexibility of this channel surely modulate the catalytic ability of the enzymes in this family. In order to gain an understanding of the role of the residues comprising the channel, mutants derived from PaDa-I, a laboratory-evolved UPO variant from Agrocybe aegerita, were obtained. The two phenylalanine residues at the surface of the channel, which regulate the traffic towards the heme active site, were mutated by less bulky residues (alanine and leucine). The mutants were experimentally characterized, and computational studies (i.e., molecular dynamics (MD)) were performed. The results suggest that these residues are necessary to reduce the flexibility of the region and maintain the topography of the channel. This work was supported by PAPIIT IN209116 and IN214619 and by the Comunidad de Madrid project Y2018/BIO4738-EVOCHIMERA. International Workshop on Robotac: New Progress in Tactile Perception and Learning in RoboticsNovel tactile sensors allow treating pressure lectures as standard images due to its highresolution. Therefore, computer vision algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be used to identify objects in contact. In this work, a high-resolution tactile sensor has been attached to a robotic end-effector to identify objects in contact. Moreover, two CNNs-based approaches have been tested in an experiment of classification of pressure images. These methods include a transfer learning approach using a pre-trained CNN on an RGB images dataset and a custom-made CNN trained from scratch with tactile information. A comparative study of performance between them has been carried out.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech. Lattice-gas Monte Carlo study of sI clathrate hydrates of ethylene: Stability analysis and cell distortion

    Get PDF
In this paper, a two-dimensional lattice-gas model is applied to study the stability and lattice distortion of sI clathrate hydrates of ethylene. Two levels of approximation are considered for the lateral interactions between the adsorbed molecules. By using Monte Carlo simulations, adsorption isotherm (coverage of the cavities as a function of the chemical potential), degree of deformation of the sI structure, and free energy of the adsorbed phase are obtained. A direct relationship between cell distortion and cell occupancy is observed. In addition, the minimum distortion coincides with the minimum value of the free energy. Accordingly, the stability phase diagram can be calculated from the values of the chemical potential at the minimum deformation. The obtained results indicate that the most stable condition of the system occurs for values of the cavity density ranging between 0.35 and 0.4. Finally, MC results are compared with data from experiments and more complex simulations.Fil: Longone, Pablo Jesus.

Outcomes and endpoints of relevance in gynecologic cancer clinical trials.

    Get PDF
Drug development is paramount to improve outcomes in patients with gynecologic cancers. A randomized clinical trial should measure whether a clinically relevant improvement is detected with the new intervention compared with the standard of care, using reproductible and appropriate endpoints. Clinically meaningful improvements in overall survival and/or quality of life (QoL) are the gold standards to measure benefit of new therapeutic strategies. Alternative endpoints, such as progression-free survival, provide an earlier measure of the effect of the new therapeutic drug, and are not confounded by the effect of subsequent lines of therapy. Yet, its surrogacy with improved overall survival or QoL is unclear in gynecologic malignancies. Of relevance to studies assessing maintenance strategies are other time-to-event endpoints, such as progression-free survival two and time to second subsequent treatment, which provide valuable information on the disease control in the longer term. Translational and biomarker studies are increasingly being incorporated into gynecologic oncology clinical trials, as they may allow understanding of the biology of the disease, resistance mechanisms, and enable a better selection of patients who might benefit from the new therapeutic strategy. Globally, the endpoint selection of a clinical trial will differ according to the type of study, population, disease setting, and type of therapeutic strategy. This review provides an overview of primary and secondary endpoint selection of relevance for gynecologic oncology clinical trials

Convergence, Hemiplasy, and Correlated Evolution Impact Morphological Diversity Related to a Web-Less Lifestyle in the Two-Clawed Spiders

    Get PDF
Traits that independently evolve many times are important for testing hypotheses about correlated evolution and understanding the forces shaping biodiversity. However, population genetics processes can cause hemiplasies (traits determined by genes whose topologies do not match the species tree), leading to a false impression of convergence (homoplasy) and potentially misleading inferences of correlated evolution. Discerning between homoplasies and hemiplasies can be important in cases of rapid radiations and clades with many gene tree incongruences. Here, focusing on two-clawed spiders (Dionycha) and close relatives, we evaluate if the observed distribution of characters related to a web-less lifestyle could be better explained as synapomorphies, homoplasies, or hemiplasies. We find that, although there are several convergences, hemiplasies are also sometimes probable. We discuss how these hemiplasies could affect inferences about correlation and causal relationship of traits. Understanding when and where in the tree of life hemiplasy could have happened is important, preventing false inference of convergent evolution. Furthermore, this understanding can provide alternative hypotheses that can be tested with independent data. Using traits related to the climbing ability of spiders we show that, when hemiplasy is unlikely, adequate model testing can be used to better understand correlated evolution, and propose hypotheses to be tested using controlled behavioral and mechanical experiments.Fil: Azevedo, Guilherme H.
