Acoustics of Vowel Articulation in Flute Playing

Through an experiment and series of acoustic analysis, this thesis evaluates if vowel articulation modifies flute sound. It is an initial investigation in a sequence of research on linguistics solving major questions in flute performance and teaching, and is a continuation of a previous pilot project called “Acoustics and Perception of Speech Sound on the Flute,” where participants attempt to distinguish vowel articulation of the mouth while playing the flute. In this thesis, the flute sound is tested acoustically to provide evidence of how vowels alter the timbre. To this end, a professional flutist recorded A=440 Hz in the three octaves of the flute. The participant played one pitch while shaping the mouth using one monophthong. The first recording used peripheral vowels on the IPA, while in a second recording the flutist played vowels contrasting in jaw height on the IPA, therefore producing a total of thirty samples. The collected data was evaluated using spectra analysis, overall loudness, and specific spectral prominences to explain in different dimensions how flute sound behaves in isolation. The results did not show consistent evidence proving timbre differences. The changes in spectra are small, not related to vowel articulation and quality, giving random results within a specified range. The results provide evidence that the acoustics of phonetic vowels do not correspond to flute sound

El tema de este texto es la elusión constitucional. Esta es una forma de manipulación constitucional que consiste en adoptar un texto normativo concreto (usualmente un decreto reglamentario o cualquier otra clase de decreto administrativo, un acto legislativo o un acuerdo simplificado) y usarlo de modo tal, que se contengan dentro de él enunciados que logran escapar al control constitucional. El asunto consiste en hacer una mímesis o "camuflaje": se expide una norma con nombre de decreto administrativo, usualmente un decreto reglamentario (esa su apariencia o "camuflaje") y se le dan contenidos con reserva de ley. De esta manera se logran varios efectos perversos: se usurpan las reservas legales (que son verdaderas garantías para el ciudadano); se suprime el debate democrático a la vez que se diluye la división de poderes, para dejarlo todo en la voluntad del presidente; y se evita el control constitucional, pues al usarse el "camuflaje" de un decreto de contenido administrativo, la competencia para su "control" pasa al Consejo de Estado, que como se sabe, es un órgano judicial que se comporta con frecuencia como cumpliendo funciones notariales al presidente

Intersymbol and Intercarrier Interference in OFDM Transmissions through Highly Dispersive Channels

This work quantifies, for the first time, intersymbol and intercarrier interferences induced by very dispersive channels in OFDM systems. The resulting achievable data rate for \wam{suboptimal} OFDM transmissions is derived based on the computation of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for arbitrary length finite duration channel impulse responses. Simulation results point to significant differences between data rates obtained via conventional formulations, for which interferences are supposed to be limited to two or three blocks, versus the data rates considering the actual channel dispersion

UNEMPLOYMENT DURATION, UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS AND RECALLS

We use administrative micro-data to investigate exits from unemployment of benefit recipients in Spain. Because the data allow us to distinguish between transitions to a new job and recall to the same employer, we apply a competing risks model with observed and unobserved heterogeneity. We are also able to control for the type of benefit received by the worker: insurance benefit or assistance benefit. We find significant differences between the new job hazard and the recall hazard. Both hazard rates increase around the time that insurance benefit elapses. We also find that when larger firms recall unemployed workers they tend to do so faster than smaller firms. In general, our results are consistent with predictions derived from search and implicit contract models. They highlight the importance of taking into account the possibility of recall in the analysis of unemployment duration among unemployment benefit recipients.

Exits from unemployment: recall or new job

This paper studies transitions out of unemployment in Spain distinguishing between recall to the same employer and reemployment in a new job. We use a large sample of newly unemployed workers obtained from Social Security records for Spain. These data contain information about each individual's employer identy before and after the unemployment spell. A discrete-time duration model with competing risks of exits serves us to investigate the factors that influence the probabilities of leaving unemployment to return to the same employer or to find a new job with a different employer. We find that the route to exit unemployment is determinant to understand the influence of individual an job characteristics on the hazard rate, as well as the latter dependence on unemployment duration. The recall hazard rate exhibits positive duration dependence during the first months and negative duration dependence thereafter (it is larger for females), while the new-job hazard presents positive duration dependence (it is larger for males).
