    Fluctuations in a superconducting quantum critical point of multi-band metals

    In multi-band metals quasi-particles arising from different atomic orbitals coexist at a common Fermi surface. Superconductivity in these materials may appear due to interactions within a band (intra-band) or among the distinct metallic bands (inter-band). Here we consider the suppression of superconductivity in the intra-band case due to hybridization. The fluctuations at the superconducting quantum critical point (SQCP) are obtained calculating the response of the system to a fictitious space and time dependent field, which couples to the superconducting order parameter. The appearance of superconductivity is related to the divergence of a generalized susceptibility. For a single band superconductor this coincides with the \textit{Thouless criterion}. For fixed chemical potential and large hybridization, the superconducting state has many features in common with breached pair superconductivity with unpaired electrons at the Fermi surface. The T=0 phase transition from the superconductor to the normal state is in the universality class of the density-driven Bose-Einstein condensation. For fixed number of particles and in the strong coupling limit, the system still has an instability to the normal sate with increasing hybridization.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Efficient conservative collision detection for populated virtual worlds

    Large virtual worlds, with considerable level of detail are starting to emerge everywhere, from large areas of actual cities to archaeological reconstructions of large sites. Populating a virtual world adds an extra touch to the visualization of these worlds, but unfortunately it also brings an extra burden to the system. Several tasks are required when adding animated characters to a virtual world, such as collision detection, path planning and other AI algorithms, rendering of dynamic geometry, amongst others. In here a method for efficient and scalable conservative collision detection is presented, that is able to deal with large scenes and thousands of avatars. This method does not perform exact collision detection, hence it is conservative. The method is suitable as a basis for path planning algorithms and other AI algorithms where an avatar is often regarded as 'something' that can be bounded by a cylinder, or a box. The algorithm is capable of dealing with arbitrarily complex 3D worlds, and does not require any a priori knowledge of the geometry.ACM Siggraph, EG, GGC

    Atmospheric scattering is the natural phenomenon mainly responsible for the colours we observe in the sky. Over the years, several realistic computer graphics algorithms have been proposed in order to reproduce these colours. This state of the art is motivated by the large amount of scattered information, and by its great potential usage in a wide range of applications like flight simulators, video games and movies. This paper will cover the most important models and will present their evolution over the years. The first part contains a small introduction to the mechanics behind the light scattering phenomena. The second part will cover the earlier models, very much focused in the physical phenomenon.     Agentes infecciosos em ateromas coronarianos: um possível papel na patogênese da ruptura da placa e infarto agudo do miocárdio

    In this review we report our recent findings of histopathological features of plaque instability and the association with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) infection, studying thrombosed coronary artery segments (CAS) of patients who died due to acute myocardial infarction. Vulnerable plaques are known to be associated with fat atheromas and inflammation of the plaque. Here we demonstrated that vulnerability is also related with focal positive vessel remodeling that maintains relatively well preserved lumen even in the presence of large atheromatous plaques. This phenomena may explain why the cinecoronariography may not detect large and dangerous vulnerable plaques. Greater amount of these bacteria in vulnerable plaques is associated with adventitial inflammation and positive vessel remodeling: the mean numbers of lymphocytes were significantly higher in adventitia than in the plaque, good direct correlation was obtained between numbers of CD20 B cells and numbers of CP infected cells in adventitia, and between % area of MP-DNA in the plaque and cross sectional area of the vessel, suggesting a cause-effect relationship. Mycoplasma is a bacterium that needs cholesterol for proliferation and may increase virulence of other infectious agents. In conclusion, co-infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae may represent an important co-factor for plaque instability, leading to coronary plaque thrombosis and acute myocardial infarction, since larger amount of these bacteria strongly correlated with histological signs of more vulnerability of the plaque. The search of CMV and Helicobacter pilori in these tissues resulted negative.Nesta revisão relatamos recentes achados nossos sobre aspectos histológicos de instabilidade da placa e a associação com Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) e Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP), estudando segmentos de artéria coronária trombosados de pacientes que faleceram por infarto agudo do miocárdio. Placas vulneráveis são conhecidas como sendo placas gordurosas e com inflamação. Aqui demonstramos que a vulnerabilidade está também relacionada com remodelamento positivo do vaso o qual pode preservar a luz do vaso mesmo na presença de uma placa de ateroma grande. Grande quantidade dessas bactérias em placas vulneráveis está associada a inflamação da adventícia e remodelamento positivo do vaso: o número médio de linfócitos foi significativamente maior na adventícia do que na placa, e boas correlações diretas foram obtidas entre os números médios de células B CD20 e os números de células infectadas por CP na adventícia, e entre as % de áreas positivas para MP na placa e as áreas em secção transversal dos respectivos vasos, sugerindo uma relação de causa - efeito entre esses agentes infecciosos e vulnerabilidade da placa. Micoplasma é uma bactéria que necessita colesterol para a proliferação e pode aumentar a virulência de outros agentes infecciosos. Em conclusão, co-infecção por Mycoplasma pneumoniae e Chlamydia pneumoniae pode representar um importante co-fator de instabilidade da placa, levando a trombose da placa coronariana e infarto agudo do miocárdio, pois a maior quantidade dessas bactérias mostrou forte correlação com sinais histológicos de maior vulnerabilidade da placa.     Quantum criticality in inter-band superconductors

    In fermionic systems with different types of quasi-particles, attractive interactions can give rise to exotic superconducting states, as pair density wave (PDW) superconductivity and breached pairing. In the last years the search for these new types of ground states in cold atom and in metallic systems has been intense. In the case of metals the different quasi-particles may be the up and down spin bands in an external magnetic field or bands arising from distinct atomic orbitals that coexist at a common Fermi surface. These systems present a complex phase diagram as a function of the difference between the Fermi wave-vectors of the different bands. This can be controlled by external means, varying the density in the two-component cold atom system or, in a metal, by applying an external magnetic field or pressure. Here we study the zero temperature instability of the normal system as the Fermi wave-vectors mismatch of the quasi-particles (bands) is reduced and find a second order quantum phase transition to a PDW superconducting state. From the nature of the quantum critical fluctuations close to the superconducting quantum critical point (SQCP), we obtain its dynamic critical exponent. It turns out to be z=2z=2 and this allows to fully characterize the SQCP for dimensions d2d \ge 2.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Fishers' Knowledge About Fish Trophic Interactions In The Southeastern Brazilian Coast

This study analyzed the fisher's LEK about trophic relationships of fishes in the southeastern Brazilian coast, comparing fishers' LEK with scientific knowledge to provide new hypotheses. Methods: The initial contacts with fishers were made through informal visits in their residences, to explain the research goals, meet fishers and their families, check the number of resident fishers and ask for fishers' consent to participate in the research. After this initial contact, fishers were selected to be included in the interviews through the technique of snowball sampling. The fishers indicated by others who attended the criteria to be included in the research were interviewed by using a semi-structured standard questionnaire. Results: There were interviewed 26 artisanal fishers from three communities of the Ilhabela: Jabaquara, Fome and Serraria. The interviewed fishers showed a detailed knowledge about the trophic interactions of the studied coastal fishes, as fishers mentioned 17 food items for these fishes and six fish and three mammals as fish predators. The most mentioned food items were small fish, shrimps and crabs, while the most mentioned predators were large reef fishes. Fishers also mentioned some predators, such as sea otters, that have not been reported by the biological literature and are poorly known. Conclusions: The LEK of the studied fishers showed a high degree of concordance with the scientific literature regarding fish diet.     Influence of exercise order on upper body maximum and submaximal strength gains in trained men

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of exercise order on one-repetition maximum (1-RM) and ten-repetition maximum (10-RM) strength gains after 6 weeks of resistance training (RT) in trained men. Sixteen men were randomly assigned into two groups based on the order of exercises performed during training sessions: a group that performed large muscle group exercises first and progressed to small muscle group exercises (LG-SM); while a second group performed the opposite sequence and started with small muscle group exercises and progressed to large muscle group exercises (SM-LG). Four sessions of RT were conducted per week; all exercises were performed for three sets of 8–12 repetitions with 1-min rest intervals between sets. Maximal and submaximal strength were assessed at baseline and after 6 weeks of RT with 1-RM and 10-RM testing for the bench press (BP), lat pulldown (LPD), triceps pulley extension (TE) and biceps curl (BC), respectively. Two-way ANOVA for the 1-RM and 10-RM tests indicated a significant group x time interaction. The 1-RM values significantly increased for all exercises in both groups (P\u3c0.05), but were not significantly different between groups. However, effect size (ES) data indicated that the LG-SM group exhibited a greater magnitude of gains (1-RM and 10-RM) for the BP and LPD exercises. Conversely, ES indicated that the SM-LG group exhibited a greater magnitude of gains (1-RM and 10-RM) for the TE and BC exercises. In conclusion, the results suggest that upper body movements should be prioritized and performed according to individual needs to maximize maximal and submaximal strength

    {\beta}-YbAlB4: a critical nodal metal

    We propose a model for the intrinsic quantum criticality of {\beta}-YbAlB4, in which a vortex in momentum space gives rise to a new type of Fermi surface singularity. The unquenched angular momentum of the |J = 7/2,m_J = \pm5/2> Yb 4f-states generates a momentum-space line defect in the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons, leading to a quasi-two dimensional Fermi surface with a k\perp4 dispersion and a singular density of states proportional to E^{-1/2}. We discuss the implications of this line-node in momentum space for our current understanding of quantum criticality and its interplay with topology
