The Old English Genesis and Milton's Paradise Lost: the characterisation of Satan

The aim of this study is to determine whether and to what extent the English poet John Milton may have been influenced in the composition of Paradise Lost by the Old English poem known as Genesis B. The paper will examine similarities and dif-ferences in the characterisation of Satan and of the temptation of Adam and Eve in both poems. The comparison between two of the illuminations of the Junius 11 ms. and the corresponding passages in Paradise Lost will be part of the analysis

Man and Landscape in Old English Literature

The purpose of this paper is to study the relationship between man and landscape in Old Eng¬lish literature starting from the assumption that, during the Middle Ages, landscape was not merely a physical space, but it was rather a complex dimension involving religious and moral aspects. Examples from poetic and prose texts will show how the natural world was usually hostile and inhospitable. Mappae mundi will help determine how the Anglo-Saxons considered themselves in relation to the environment

Uncovering the Role of Natural and Synthetic Small Molecules in Counteracting the Burden of α-Synuclein Aggregates and Related Toxicity in Different Models of Parkinson’s Disease

A proteostasis network represents a sophisticated cellular system that controls the whole process which leads to properly folded functional proteins. The imbalance of proteostasis determines a quantitative increase in misfolded proteins prone to aggregation and elicits the onset of different diseases. Among these, Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive brain disorder characterized by motor and non-motor signs. In PD pathogenesis, alpha-Synuclein (α-Syn) loses its native structure, triggering a polymerization cascade that leads to the formation of toxic inclusions, the PD hallmark. Because molecular chaperones represent a "cellular arsenal" to counteract protein misfolding and aggregation, the modulation of their expression represents a compelling PD therapeutic strategy. This review will discuss evidence concerning the effects of natural and synthetic small molecules in counteracting α-Syn aggregation process and related toxicity, in different in vitro and in vivo PD models. Firstly, the role of small molecules that modulate the function(s) of chaperones will be highlighted. Then, attention will be paid to small molecules that interfere with different steps of the protein-aggregation process. This overview would stimulate in-depth research on already-known small molecules or the development of new ones, with the aim of developing drugs that are able to modify the progression of the disease

No Ordinary Love: O papel do receptor na midialidade

Este artigo discute a relação tríade produtor/mídia/receptor desde o ponto de vista dos estudos da intermidialidade. Para isso, apresenta, em um primeiro momento, considerações sobre a produção e recepção de produtos compostos unicamente de linguagem verbal nos estudos sobre a leitura. A hipótese é de que configurações midiáticas compostas de diferentes modais solicitam de um multireceptor uma ativação sofisticada de diferentes processos cognitivos no momento da midialidade. O artigo é ilustrado pela análise das dinâmicas de produção e recepção de obras visuais, nomeadamente pinturas de Édouard Manet e Salman Toor. Letramento literário multimodal e intermidiático: a construção do leitor/scriptor de una nova mídia

Esse artigo apresenta uma experiência didática realizada com estudantes da graduação de Letras (Português, Português-Francês, Português-Inglês, Português-Espanhol), da Escola de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas/UNIFESP, campus Guarulhos, durante o segundo semestre de 2015. O objetivo do curso, intitulado “Adaptação Literária e Multimodalidade”, era o de levar o aprendiz a se apropriar dos conceitos fundamentais de multimodalidade e de intermidialidade por meio de análise de adaptações literárias em diversas mídias. O insólito recriado: “Le Horla” de Maupassant em linguagem HQ

Malrieu (1992) suggests that the gothic genre appears in the 19th century as intrinsically linked to a widespread feeling that life could not be explained by means of scientific reason alone.). If the gothic has its roots in such a peculiar moment, how could it be translated to the new context of the 21st century? This paper examines the translation of a literary text to the language of comics, analyzing the strategies for recreating monomodal literature within the new multimodal setting (BOUTIN, 2012). It is argued that the imagetic sequences in comics rebuild the first text and offer a glimpse into the workings of polysemy in literary texts. To illustrate the issues in multimodal translation, the comics version of Maupassant’s Le Horla (Le Horla d’après l’oeuvre de Guy de Maupassant - SOREL, 2014) is examined. The paper also discusses the use of imagetic resources to recreate the hesitation vis-à-vis the reality of perceived facts (CASTEX, 2004, p.274).Malrieu (1992) indica que, no século XIX, o fantástico surge como visceralmente ligado à sensação difusa que a vida não pode ser explicada somente pela racionalidade científica. Se o fantástico tem raízes em um momento tão particular, como transportá-lo para o novo contexto do século XXI? Atualmente o fantástico é objeto de várias formas de re-significação e de releitura através de novas tecnologias. Esse artigo investiga a transposição midiática HQ, examinando os recursos que usa para capturar o suspense criado pelo texto monomodal e recriá-lo em uma linguagem que conjuga múltiplos modos: textual, visual, gestual, sonoro etc. (BOUTIN, 2012). A sequência de imagens HQ repropõe o texto primeiro, desvelando a polissemia do literário. Para ilustrar esse caminho de transposição de linguagens, examina-se a versão HQ Le Horla d’après l’oeuvre de Guy de Maupassant (SOREL, 2014) para entender a articulação que se materializa em uma nova narrativa provocando no leitor uma hesitação que o leva a se questionar se o “que o apavora é imaginário ou real” (CASTEX, 2004, p.274, tradução nossa)

Diálogos intermidiais: Emma Bovary em mangá

Contemporary transformations in information technology have determined new dynamics in language. Intermedia processes have renewed literature, rearranging forms of producing, propagating, and signifying texts. This paper analyses the multimodal elements that recreate literary texts via other media focusing on Yumiko Igarashi’s manga version of Flaubert’s novel (Madame Bovary, 2013). In this version, the author creates “a link in the chain of verbal exchange” (BAKHTIN, 1984) through a new multimodal media. The result “thematizes, hints at or imitates elements or structures from other media”, in this case, a nineteenth-century novel, by means of “strategies for the creation of meanings”. Through a process of acclimatization and relocation (FRAISSE, 2012), this emblematic character is reinvented, launching a new dialogue between cultures.As transformações contemporâneas das tecnologias da informação determinaram novas dinâmicas na linguagem. Processos intermidiais impulsionaram a literatura, estabelecendo uma fricção entre culturas, reconfigurando formas de produção, difusão e significação textuais. Este artigo analisa elementos multimodais que associam texto literário a outros modos de linguagem, tendo por objeto a releitura em linguagem mangá do romance de Flaubert, Madame Bovary, de Yumiko Igarashi. Nessa versão, a autora cria um elo na corrente da troca verbal (BAKHTIN, 1984) via um novo produto midiático multimodal.
