Encountering the Viper: Edward Bliss Emerson and Slavery
The journal of Edward Bliss Emerson often mentions topics that piqued his curiosity because they were unusual or puzzling. Few subjects were as foreign to him as slavery. Writing in 1831-32, Emerson provides us a series of aural and visual vignettes rather than a coherent commentary on slavery as a way of life. Focusing on the everyday aspects of the institution instead of the politics and economics behind it, Emerson nevertheless suggests the different lenses through which slavery was viewed by a New England intellectual and others
Ideology and Etiology in the Treatment of Edward Bliss Emerson\u27s Pulmonary Consumption
Although Edward Bliss Emerson’s life had unusual promise, his death was quite ordinary: he died of pulmonary consumption, which accounted for one in five deaths in the 1830s. He went to the West Indies in search of a more healthful climate, and sought it in St. Croix and Puerto Rico. But his quest was short-lived, and he died in 1834 at the age of 29. Because there was no consensus on the cause of consumption, treatment for the condition varied widely, and included a number of nostrums and therapies that may be considered “self-care.” Edward adopted a series of practices that he documented in his journal, therefore providing us with the range of lifestyle interventions and other therapies that were seen as desirable, and the belief systems informing these at the time. These practices ranged from the medically-sanctioned to the highly personal and idiosyncratic, and suggest a variety of holistic approaches to addressing an illness for which there was no “magic bullet.
The research conducted in this paper focuses on the generation
of a model for the quantification of energy consumption
in building. This is to be done through one of
the most relevant environmental impact indicators associated
with weight per m2 of construction, as well as the
energy consumption resulting from the manufacturing
process of materials used in building construction.
The practical application of the proposed model on different
buildings typologies in Seville, will provide information
regarding the building materials, the subsystems
and the most relevant construction elements. Hence, we
will be able to observe the impact the built surface has
on the environment.
The results obtained aim to reference the scientific community,
providing quantitative data comparable to other
types of buildings and geographical areas. Furthermore,
it may also allow the analysis and the characterization of
feasible solutions to reduce the environmental impact
generated by the different materials, subsystems and
construction elements commonly used in the different
building types defined in this study.
edificatorias definidas
Sustainability Assessment in Singular Structures, Foundations and Structural Rehabilitation in Spanish Legislation
The objective of this work is twofold: to determine the scope of the tools currently available for the assessment of
sustainability of structures in Spanish legislation; and to identify environmental aspects that have yet to be covered, especially in the
case of foundations and of measures aimed at the structural rehabilitation of singular buildings. To this end, the method proposed in
the Spanish Instruction of Structural Concrete is applied to the particular case of the supported foundations of the Cylindrical and
Colonel buildings in the construction of the new Faculties of Law and of Work Sciences, of the University of Seville during the
period between 2005 and 2008. This case was chosen for its special uniqueness and for its inclusion of environmental aspects that
remain outside the scope of existing methods.
Most of these aspects are also of great relevance in structural rehabilitation activities carried out in urban environments and
neighbourhoods, where a major surge is currently underway due to the economic crisis that has hit projects of newly constructed
buildings. By virtue of the work carried out in recent years in the field of sustainability and the environment by several research
groups at the University of Seville, a number of alternatives are proposed for the quantification of those aspects that remain to be
considered. These techniques are based on tools that allow the agents to intervene in a flexible and effective way in the project
implementation phase
This article seeks to analyze a number of factors which may influence de process of technology transfer from technological institutes to enterprises. Taking as a reference a literature review and adding up our own knowledge regarding the subject, we have developed a model of technology transfer. This model has been applied to two samples of Spanish and Brazilian technological institutes. The main objective lies in identifying those factors that may have a greater influence on the scientific and financial success of those institutes. It has been carried out a thorough data analysis with the assistance of statistical tools such as: Bivariate Correlation Analysis, Multivariate Analysis and Multiple Regression Stepwise Method. The results show some similarities as well as differences when comparing the two samples. Our results clearly indicate that the Spanish institutes exhibit a greater experience and especialization on cooperative research with comercial companies. However, even within the same country there are different patterns of especialization: some institutes focus on their own research and others seek to satisfy the needs of companies. This article seeks to analyze a number of factors which may influence de process of technology transfer from technological institutes to enterprises.
