Composite Fading Models based on Inverse Gamma Shadowing: Theory and Validation

    Get PDF
We introduce a general approach to characterize composite fading models based on inverse gamma (IG) shadowing. We first determine to what extent the IG distribution is an adequate choice for modeling shadow fading, by means of a comprehensive test with field measurements and other distributions conventionally used for this purpose. Then, we prove that the probability density function and cumulative distribution function of any IG-based composite fading model are directly expressed in terms of a Laplace-domain statistic of the underlying fast fading model and, in some relevant cases, as a mixture of wellknown state-of-the-art distributions. Also, exact and asymptotic expressions for the outage probability are provided, which are valid for any choice of baseline fading distribution. Finally, we exemplify our approach by presenting several application examples for IG-based composite fading models, for which their statistical characterization is directly obtained in a simple form.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for publication.

Backing off from rayleigh and rice: Achieving perfect secrecy in wireless fading channels

We show that for a legitimate communication under multipath quasi-static fading with a reduced number of scatter- ers, it is possible to achieve perfect secrecy even in the presence of a passive eavesdropper for which no channel state information is available. Specifically, we show that the outage probability of secrecy capacity (OPSC) is zero for a given range of average signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate and eavesdropper’s receivers. As an application example, we analyze the OPSC for the case of two scatterers, explicitly deriving the relationship between the average SNRs, the secrecy rate RS and the fading model parameters required for achieving perfect secrecy.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (TEC2017-87913R) Consejería de Innovación y Ciencia (P18-RT-3175

Empirical Validation of a Class of Ray-Based Fading Models

As new wireless standards are developed, the use of higher operation frequencies comes in hand with new use cases and propagation effects that differ from the well-established state of the art. Numerous stochastic fading models have recently emerged under the umbrella of generalized fading conditions, to provide a fine-grain characterization of propagation channels in the mmWave and sub-THz bands. For the first time in literature, this work carries out an experimental validation of a class of such ray-based models, in a wide range of propagation conditions (anechoic, reverberation and indoor) at mmWave bands. We show that the independently fluctuating two-ray (IFTR) model has good capabilities to recreate rather dissimilar environments with high accuracy. We also put forth that the key limitations of the IFTR model arise in the presence of reduced diffuse propagation, and also due to a limited phase variability for the dominant specular components.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure

[EN] The integration of digitization into various aspects of daily life has been accelerated recently, particularly in the realm of e-government. This study focuses on examining the emotions of key stakeholders in non-university public education, specifically educational centers, teachers, and families, as they pertain to educational applications developed by Spanish autonomous communities. The research employs a novel approach, incorporating word processing analysis to evaluate the emotions expressed in Twitter posts by the aforementioned groups. The analysis employs the Plutchick model of emotions and feelings, utilizing various R libraries designed for this type of analysis. The findings suggest differing perceptions of educational apps among the studied groups.Junta de Andalucía. Purpose The HPV-Quality-of-Life (HPV-QoL) questionnaire was developed to determine the impact of Human-Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and related interventions on women health-related quality-of-life. This study provides the development and preliminary psychometric properties of a novel HPV-QoL questionnaire for adult women with HPV. Methods After reviewing literature and cognitive debriefing interviews in women who had experienced HPV-related conditions, instrument items and domains were developed. A draft questionnaire was pilot tested for comprehension and ease of completion. Psychometric evaluation of the final HPV-QoL scale was conducted in a psychometric study including 252 adult women derived to our centre by a positive HPV test in the cervical cancer screening program and/or presenting genital warts. Results The present study reveals that the HPV-QoL questionnaire, structured in four domains: general well-being [including psychological well-being and social well-being subdomains], health, contagiousness and sexuality, showed good metric properties of feasibility irrespective of age or educational level, and time to administer was less than 5 min. Internal consistency and temporal stability (reliability) showed values above the acceptable standards. The instrument showed its concurrent validity by means of a significant correlation with mental and sexual existing instruments; GHQ-12 and FSFI questionnaires, respectively, and also known groups validity showing significant differences among the subgroups regarding either sexual dysfunction or mental deterioration. Conclusion This study provides an HPV-QoL questionnaire with an innovative patient-reported outcomes specific measurement tool to assess HRQoL in women with HPV infection. The present study suggests this questionnaire has satisfactory psychometric properties, including validity and reliability. Results support the use of the HPV-QoL questionnaire as a HRQoL measurement instrument for daily medical practice and clinical research.pre-print927 K

    Get PDF

This article presents the results of a study conducted in 2012 and 2013 which sought to investigate the effectiveness of the teacher performance evaluation implemented in Chile with teachers from public schools in order to improve the learning outcomes of Chilean students. The research was conducted using the quantitative paradigm. In order to relate the results of students with the teacher evaluated, we selected cohorts of students in the fourth year of primary education who had been taught Language and Communication and Mathematics by the teacher evaluated. The relation was established using a multivariate model. The results obtained allow us to argue that there is no significant relationship between participating in the assessment of teacher performance and the learning outcomes of students. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze not only the effectiveness of the process but also the official argument of the benefits of teachers undergoing this type of evaluation. Finally, this study’s results, in addition to international evidence, support the need for complexifying the Chilean evaluation model by means of the concepts of decentralization, contextualization and participation, which are absent from the process currently implemented.
