    Pathfinder first light: alignment, calibration, and commissioning of the LINC-NIRVANA ground-layer adaptive optics subsystem

    We present descriptions of the alignment and calibration tests of the Pathfinder, which achieved first light during our 2013 commissioning campaign at the LBT. The full LINC-NIRVANA instrument is a Fizeau interferometric imager with fringe tracking and 2-layer natural guide star multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) systems on each eye of the LBT. The MCAO correction for each side is achieved using a ground layer wavefront sensor that drives the LBT adaptive secondary mirror and a mid-high layer wavefront sensor that drives a Xinetics 349 actuator DM conjugated to an altitude of 7.1 km. When the LINC-NIRVANA MCAO system is commissioned, it will be one of only two such systems on an 8-meter telescope and the only such system in the northern hemisphere. In order to mitigate risk, we take a modular approach to commissioning by decoupling and testing the LINC-NIRVANA subsystems individually. The Pathfinder is the ground-layer wavefront sensor for the DX eye of the LBT. It uses 12 pyramid wavefront sensors to optically co-add light from natural guide stars in order to make four pupil images that sense ground layer turbulence. Pathfinder is now the first LINC-NIRVANA subsystem to be fully integrated with the telescope and commissioned on sky. Our 2013 commissioning campaign consisted of 7 runs at the LBT with the tasks of assembly, integration and communication with the LBT telescope control system, alignment to the telescope optical axis, off-sky closed loop AO calibration, and finally closed loop on-sky AO. We present the programmatics of this campaign, along with the novel designs of our alignment scheme and our off-sky calibration test, which lead to the Pathfinder's first on-sky closed loop images

    Impact of Strain and Morphology on Magnetic Properties of Fe3O4/NiO Bilayers Grown on Nb:SrTiO3(001) and MgO(001)

Materials. 2018;11(7): 1122.We present a comparative study of the morphology and structural as well as magnetic properties of crystalline Fe3O4/NiO bilayers grown on both MgO(001) and SrTiO3(001) substrates by reactive molecular beam epitaxy. These structures were investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray reflectivity and diffraction, as well as vibrating sample magnetometry. While the lattice mismatch of NiO grown on MgO(001) was only 0.8%, it was exposed to a lateral lattice mismatch of -6.9% if grown on SrTiO3. In the case of Fe3O4, the misfit strain on MgO(001) and SrTiO3(001) amounted to 0.3% and -7.5%, respectively. To clarify the relaxation process of the bilayer system, the film thicknesses of the magnetite and nickel oxide films were varied between 5 and 20 nm. While NiO films were well ordered on both substrates, Fe3O4 films grown on NiO/SrTiO3 exhibited a higher surface roughness as well as lower structural ordering compared to films grown on NiO/MgO. Further, NiO films grew pseudomorphic in the investigated thickness range on MgO substrates without any indication of relaxation, whereas on SrTiO3 the NiO films showed strong strain relaxation. Fe3O4 films also exhibited strong relaxation, even for films of 5nm thickness on both NiO/MgO and NiO/SrTiO3. The magnetite layers on both substrates showed a fourfold magnetic in-plane anisotropy with magnetic easy axes pointing in directions. The coercive field was strongly enhanced for magnetite grown on NiO/SrTiO3 due to the higher density of structural defects, compared to magnetite grown on NiO/MgO

    The project focuses on the efficiency of combined technologies to reduce the release of micropollutants and bacteria into surface waters via sewage treatment plants of different size and via stormwater overflow basins of different types. As a model river in a highly populated catchment area, the river Schussen and, as a control, the river Argen, two tributaries of Lake Constance, Southern Germany, are under investigation in this project. The efficiency of the different cleaning technologies is monitored by a wide range of exposure and effect analyses including chemical and microbiological techniques as well as effect studies ranging from molecules to communities

    LINC--NIRVANA (LN) is an MCAO module currently mounted on the Rear Bent Gregorian focus of the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). It mounts a camera originally designed to realize the interferometric imaging focal station of the telescopes. LN follows the LBT binocular strategy having two twin channels: a double Layer Oriented Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics system assisting the two arms, supplies high order wave-front correction. In order to counterbalance the field rotation, a mechanical derotation is applied for the two ground wave-front sensors, and an optical (K-mirror) one for the two high layers sensors, fixing the positions of the focal planes with respect to the pyramids aboard the wavefront sensors.     Prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of low-dose amiodarone in patients with severe heart failure and asymptomatic frequent ventricular ectopy

    Sudden cardiac death is a common cause of mortality in patients with congestive heart failure. To determine if low-dose amiodarone could reduce sudden death among these patients, a prospective, placebo-controlled, double-blind pilot trial was conducted. One hundred one patients with ejection fractions p = 0.02) and remained low after 6 months, while there was no change in ventricular ectopy among the patients receiving placebo. Despite the reduction in ectopy, there was no improvement in mortality or decrease in the incidence of sudden death. One-year mortality by Kaplan-Meier analysis was 28% in the group receiving amiodarone and 19% in the group receiving placebo (p = NS). One-year mortality in patients with >75% reduction in ventricular ectopy after 1 month of treatment was 31% versus 17% in patients with p = NS). Although the size of the trial and its statistical power do not eliminate the possibility of a significant reduction in mortality with low-dose amiodarone, any effect is likely to be modest, i.e., <25%. Therefore low-dose amiodarone can be safely administered to patients with severely impaired myocardial function and will significantly suppress spontaneous ventricular ectopy. However, despite arrhythmia suppression, low-dose amiodarone may not reduce or may have only a modest effect on the incidence of sudden death in patients with heart failure and asymptomatic ventricular ectopy.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/29119/1/0000158.pd

    Neodymium isotope constraints on provenance, dispersal, and climate-driven supply of Zambezi sediments along the Mozambique Margin during the past ∌45,000 years

    Marine sediments deposited off the Zambezi River that drains a considerable part of the southeast African continent provide continuous records of the continental climatic and environmental conditions. Here we present time series of neodymium (Nd) isotope signatures of the detrital sediment fraction during the past ~45,000 years, to reconstruct climate-driven changes in the provenance of clays deposited along the Mozambique Margin. Coherent with the surface current regime, the Nd isotope distribution in surface sediments reveals mixing of the alongshore flowing Zambezi suspension load with sediments supplied by smaller rivers located further north. To reconstruct past changes in sediment provenances, Nd isotope signatures of clays that are not significantly fractionated during weathering processes have been obtained from core 64PE304-80, which was recovered just north of the Zambezi mouth at 1329 m water depth. Distinctly unradiogenic clay signatures (ENd values <214.2) are found during the Last Glacial Maximum, Heinrich Stadial 1, and Younger Dryas. In contrast, the Nd isotope record shows higher, more radiogenic isotope signatures during Marine Isotope Stage 3 and between ~15 and ~5 ka BP, the latter coinciding with the timing of the northern hemisphere African Humid Period. The clay-sized sediment fraction with the least radiogenic Nd isotope signatures was deposited during the Holocene, when the adjacent Mozambique Shelf became completely flooded. In general, the contribution of the distinctly unradiogenic Zambezi suspension load has followed the intensity of precession-forced monsoonal precipitation and enhanced during periods of increased southern hemisphere insolation and high-latitude northern hemispheric climate variability
