Based on a mixed-method approach, this interpretive exploratory case study aimed to identify English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions and practices in Written Corrective Feedback (WCF) in the Saudi context. The study analysed quantitative data gathered from an anonymous custom designed 15-question online survey and qualitative data from an open-ended question (at the end of the online survey) and semi-structured interviews. Participants were one hundred and eighty-four English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers (n =184) who responded to the online survey (113 females and 71 males) and 7 participants who responded to the semi-structured interview (5 males and 2 females). The study findings indicated no significant differences between male and female teachers in considering “time” as the main factor in following a particular strategy for written corrective feedback (93%). The results from the semi-structured interviews highlighted the need for further research in written corrective feedback in the Saudi context to address serious issues related to the teachers’ work-load. Some recommendations were identified for further research in written corrective feedback

Understanding the gene expression is an important factor to cancer diagnosis. One target of this understanding is implementing cancer gene search and classification methods. However, cancer gene search and classification is a challenge in that there is no an obvious exact algorithm that can be implemented individually for various cancer cells. In this paper a research is con-ducted through the most common top ranked algorithms implemented for cancer gene search and classification, and how they are implemented to reach a better performance. The paper will distinguish algorithms implemented for Bio image analysis for cancer cells and algorithms implemented based on DNA array data. The main purpose of this paper is to explore a road map towards presenting the most current algorithms implemented for cancer gene search and classification

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of visual estimation of elbow joint angles. A total of 116observers (93 doctors and 23 physiotherapists) were shown 21 digital images of two arms in predeWned degrees of elbow Xexion on two separate occasions. They estimated the angle of Xexion to the nearest 5°. Only 70.8% of estimates were within +5°, although intra-observer agreement was good among all groups tested (ICC range 0.963-0.983). Orthopaedic consultants and registrars were equivalent and statistically better at estimating the angles compared to senior house officers and physiotherapists (P < 0.001). Compared to the angles of 85 and 90°, all other angles were signifcantly less likely to be estimated to within +5° (P < 0.001). In conclusion, visual estimation of joint angles at the elbow may not be desirable in cases where accurate serial assessment is required for clinical decision making. The use of a goniometer by an agreed standardized protocol is advised

Weight changes following lower limb arthroplasty : a prospective observational study

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to assess patterns of weight loss/gain following total hip or knee joint replacement. Four hundred and fifty primary lower limb arthroplasty patients, where the current surgery was the last limiting factor to improved mobility, were selected. Over a one year period 212 gained weight (mean 5.03kg), 92 remained static, and 146 lost weight. The median change was a weight gain of 0.50Kg (p=0.002). All patients had a significant improvement in Oxford outcome scores. Hip arthroplasty patients were statistically more likely to gain weight than knee arthroplasty patients. A successful arthroplasty, restoring a patient's mobility, does not necessarily lead to subsequent weight loss. The majority of patients put on weight with an overall net weight gain. No adverse effect on functional outcome was noted

Nuisance due to algae problems will become more widespread and severe as our growing urban populations and industries continue to discharge their wastes into streams. Some of the problems are odour and taste, the clogging of filters, growths in pipes, cooling towers and on reservoir walls, surface water mats or blooms and toxicity. The existing chemical and physical methods used for micro-algae removal are creating undesirable effects in the water, therefore, most of the recent researches are focusing on biological removal methods due to lesser of impact on the environment and water quality and it may be a more economical alternative to some chemical and physical methods. This study used A. flavus as bio-coagulant for micro-algae removal in domestic wastewater. Jar test is used to determine the proper A. flavus dosage and retention time. It was determined that 5% (v/v) of A. flavus as optimum concentration and 12 hours as optimum retention time. At the optimum A. flavus concentration and retention time removal efficiencies were recorded as: 72.3% of micro-algae cell number, 79.5% of TSS, 78.6% of VSS, 63.5% of COD, 60% of BOD, 73.5% of nitrate, 45.1% of phosphorus, 90.6% of color, 76.1% of turbidity and pH was decreased from (7.45 – 6.9) to (7.0 – 6.5). 1.2 mm of A. flavus soft pellets size shown a high removal in comparison with 2.5mm and 4.3mm. with 1.2mm of A. flavus soft pellets size used, 71.5% of micro-algae removal, 77.9% of TSS removal, 76.1% of VSS removal, 68.6% of COD removal and 82.6% of color removal at 12 hours of retention time are recorded. The experimental results indicated that the solid capturing ability of A. flavus increased as the free surface area of A. flavus soft pellets increased. Moreover, A. flavus soft pellets capturing ability increased as retention time increased. The zeta potential result revealed that the average zeta potential of micro-algae was – 23.7 milivolt which the average zeta potential of A. flavus was + 46.1 milivolt. The charge difference between A. flavus and micro-algae may have constituted to the A. flavus ability to capture micro-algae

This situation and condition has been going on for quite a while and the school until this moment has not been able to fulfill the means of the disc to sufficient limits or ideal conditions, for example by a ratio of 1: 2 (1 disc for 2 persons). This is understandable, because schools have a lot of needs and almost all have a high level of urgency to meet by the school. So demanding schools to provide discs in accordance with ideal conditions, is unrealistic and can further lead to unfavorable climate and climate in schools. &nbsp

Pre-Processing Edge Detection Image Enhancement and Spatial Object Velocity Estimation for Echocardiograph Diagnostic Test

    Get PDF
Echocardiograph imaging is a primary modality in the diagnosis of heart disease. Compared to other imaging techniques, such as X-Ray, MRI, and PET, echocardiograph imaging owes its great popularity to the fact that it is a safe and non-invasive procedure for visualizing the heart and vasculature. The echocardiograph image however is corrupted by speckle noise and low contrast, which make feature detection and tracking difficult. This thesis focuses on two important issues for the clinical applications of medical echocardiograph images: speckle suppression and motion estimation. The thesis first presents visualization enhancement method to clarify the heart structure and the movement of the valves. This method is designed to extract the contours of heart boundaries from a sequence of echocardiograph images, where it started with pre-processing to reduce noise and get better image quality. These pre-processing operations involved the use of median filtering, morphological opening and contrast adjustment. Thereafter, Sobel edge detection was applied and the resulted image combined with image after opening stage. This method validated visually by medical students using real echocardiograph images. Performance improvement of this method evaluated as it provides very significant speckle suppression and edge enhancement for the purposes of visualization and automatic structure detection. Second issue in this thesis is improving the detection of wall motion abnormality by quantitative analysis. The analysis of the left ventricular wall motion in routine is mostly based on visual interpretation of echocardiograph image. The interpretation of these images is widely dependent on operator training and is subject to large variability. To reduce this inter and intraobservers variability, the utilization of optical flow technique presented to estimate the left ventricular wall motion and create a cardiac motion profile based on the anatomical structure of the left ventricular wall in cross sectional view. This profile presenting the anatomical structure provides an additional means for functional imaging and eliminates the need to build a large dataset containing specific parameters of the patient to obtain an accurate diagnosis. In addition, the segmentation into three parts corresponding to the three major coronary arteries was meaningful for cardiac surgery. As a result, this method achieves an estimation of regional myocardial function with percentage of validations 71.4%, which is encouraging. In conclusion, estimation of regional myocardial deformation from intracardiac echocardiography by depending on anatomical knowledge is feasible. This work could be an important aid to improve and support diagnostic accuracy and the prognostic method for left ventricular diseases
