    Problem behavior and heart rate reactivity in adopted adolescents: Longitudinal and concurrent relations.

    The present longitudinal study examined resting heart rate and heart rate variability and reactivity to a stressful gambling task in adopted adolescents with aggressive, delinquent, or internalizing behavior problems and adopted adolescents without behavior problems (total N=151). Early-onset delinquent adolescents showed heart rate hyporeactivity to the stress-eliciting gambling task compared to late-onset delinquent adolescents and adolescents without behavior problems. Heart rate, heart rate variability, and reactivity to stress were not related to environmental factors such as early-childhood parental sensitivity, parental socioeconomic status, or adoptee's health status at arrival. We conclude that the distinction between delinquency and aggression and between childhood-onset and adolescence-onset delinquency is important for the study of stress reactivity in adolescents.     Turning evidence into recommendations: Protocol of a study guideline development groups

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Health care practice based on research evidence requires that evidence is synthesised, and that recommendations based on this evidence are implemented. It also requires an intermediate step: translating synthesised evidence into practice recommendations. There is considerable literature on evidence synthesis and implementation, but little on how guideline development groups (GDGs) produce recommendations. This is a complex process, with many influences on communication and decision-making, <it>e.g</it>., the quality of evidence, methods of presentation, practical/resource constraints, individual values, professional and scientific interests, social and psychological processes. To make this process more transparent and potentially effective, we need to understand these influences. Psychological theories of decision-making and social influence provide a framework for this understanding.</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>This study aims to investigate the processes by which GDGs formulate recommendations, drawing on psychological theories of decision-making and social influence. The findings will potentially inform the further evolution of GDG methods, such as choice of members and procedures for presenting evidence, conducting discussion and formulating recommendations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Longitudinal observation of the meetings of three National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) GDGs, one from each of acute, mental health and public health, will be tape recorded and transcribed. Interviews with a sample of GDG members at the beginning, middle, and end of the GDG's work will be recorded and transcribed. Site documents including relevant e-mail interchanges, GDG meeting minutes, and stakeholders' responses to the drafts of the recommendations will be collected. Data will be selected for analysis if they refer to either evidence or recommendations; the focus is on "hot spots", <it>e.g</it>., dilemmas, conflicts, and uncertainty. Data will be analysed thematically and by content analysis, drawing on psychological theories of decision-making and social influence.</p

    Load-shifting opportunities for typical cement plants

    Investigations into demand side reductions have been encouraged by the South African electricity utility, Eskom, in sectors with high electricity consumption, such as the cement industry. The South African cement industry is responsible for 5% of the electrical consumption for the mining and industrial sector. It has also been estimated that by 2020 this sector will be ranked fifth for energy savings potential. This paper investigates the potential of a load-shifting (altering energy use method) scheme to reduce evening peak loads and save electrical costs on a raw mill at a South African cement plant. A spread sheet-simulation was performed, which showed that six hours of load-shifting could be achieved, without adversely affecting production. This was corroborated by a pilot study where the load was successfully shifted for six hours over a week-long period. The specific raw mill would achieve a reduction in yearly electrical costs of 2% when employing this load-shifting strategy. The results, however, showed that cost-saving opportunities are highly dependent on the reliability of the mills and on the change in production demand. Therefore, load-shifting schemes have to be flexible on a daily basis to shift load whenever possible

    Black Stork Down: Military Discourses in Bird Conservation in Malta

    Tensions between Maltese hunters and bird conservation NGOs have intensified over the past decade. Conservation NGOs have become frustrated with the Maltese State for conceding to the hunter lobby and negotiating derogations from the European Union’s Bird Directive. Some NGOs have recently started to organize complex field-operations where volunteers are trained to patrol the landscape, operate drones and other surveillance technologies, detect illegalities, and lead police teams to arrest poachers. We describe the sophisticated military metaphors which conservation NGOs have developed to describe, guide and legitimize their efforts to the Maltese public and their fee-paying members. We also discuss why such groups might be inclined to adopt these metaphors. Finally, we suggest that anthropological studies of discourse could help understand delicate contexts such as this where conservation NGOs, hunting associations and the State have ended in political deadlock

    Multifunctional Biocomposites Based on Polyhydroxyalkanoate and Graphene/Carbon Nanofiber Hybrids for Electrical and Thermal Applications

    Most polymers are long-lasting and produced from monomers derived from fossil fuel sources. Bio-based and/or biodegradable plastics have been proposed as a sustainable alternative. Amongst those available, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) shows great potential across a large variety of applications but is currently limited to packaging, cosmetics and tissue engineering due to its relatively poor physical properties. An expansion of its uses can be accomplished by developing nanocomposites where PHAs are used as the polymer matrix. Herein, a PHA biopolyester was melt blended with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) or with a 1:1 hybrid mixture of GNPs and carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The resulting nanocomposites exhibited enhanced thermal stability while their Young's modulus roughly doubled compared to pure PHA. The hybrid nanocomposites percolated electrically at lower nanofiller loadings compared to the GNP-PHA system. The electrical conductivity at 15 wt.% loading was ~ 6 times higher than the GNP-based sample. As a result, the electromagnetic interference shielding performance of the hybrid material was around 50% better than the pure GNPs nanocomposites, exhibiting shielding effectiveness above 20 dB, which is the threshold for common commercial applications. The thermal conductivity increased significantly for both types of bio-nanocomposites and reached values around 5 W K-1 m-1 with the hybrid-based material displaying the best performance. Considering the solvent-free and industrially compatible production method, the proposed multifunctional materials are promising to expand the range of application of PHAs and increase the environmental sustainability of the plastic and plastic electronics industry.Comment: 26 page

    Assessing DNA methylation in the developing human intestinal epithelium: potential link to inflammatory bowel disease.

    DNA methylation is one of the major epigenetic mechanisms implicated in regulating cellular development and cell-type-specific gene expression. Here we performed simultaneous genome-wide DNA methylation and gene expression analysis on purified intestinal epithelial cells derived from human fetal gut, healthy pediatric biopsies, and children newly diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Results were validated using pyrosequencing, real-time PCR, and immunostaining. The functional impact of DNA methylation changes on gene expression was assessed by employing in-vitro assays in intestinal cell lines. DNA methylation analyses allowed identification of 214 genes for which expression is regulated via DNA methylation, i.e. regulatory differentially methylated regions (rDMRs). Pathway and functional analysis of rDMRs suggested a critical role for DNA methylation in regulating gene expression and functional development of the human intestinal epithelium. Moreover, analysis performed on intestinal epithelium of children newly diagnosed with IBD revealed alterations in DNA methylation within genomic loci, which were found to overlap significantly with those undergoing methylation changes during intestinal development. Our study provides novel insights into the physiological role of DNA methylation in regulating functional maturation of the human intestinal epithelium.     The number of online resources read by and pertinent to clinicians has increased dramatically. However, most healthcare professionals still use mainstream search engines as their primary port of entry to the resources on the Internet. These search engines use algorithms that do not make it easy to find clinician-oriented resources. FOAMSearch, a custom search engine (CSE), was developed to find relevant, high-quality online resources for emergency medicine and critical care (EMCC) clinicians. Using GoogleTM algorithms, it searches a vetted list of &gt;300 blogs, podcasts, wikis, knowledge translation tools, clinical decision support tools and medical journals. Utilisation has increased progressively to &gt;3000 users/month since its launch in 2011. Further study of the role of CSEs to find medical resources is needed, and it might be possible to develop similar CSEs for other areas of medicine

    From Vacuum Fluctuations to Radiation: Accelerated Detectors and Black Holes

    The vacuum fluctuations that induce the transitions and the thermalisation of a uniformly accelerated two level atom are studied in detail. Their energy content is revealed through the weak measurement formalism of Aharonov et al. It is shown that each time the detector makes a transition it radiates a Minkowski photon. The same analysis is then applied to the conversion of vacuum fluctuations into real quanta in the context of black hole radiation. Initially these fluctuations are located around the light like geodesic that shall generate the horizon and carry zero total energy. However upon exiting from the star they break up into two pieces one of which gradually acquires positive energy and becomes a Hawking quantum, the other, its ''partner", ends up in the singularity. As time goes by the vacuum fluctuations generating Hawking quanta have exponentially large energy densities.
