    Non stationary multifractality in stock returns

    We perform an extensive empirical analysis of scaling properties of equity returns, suggesting that financial data show time varying multifractal properties. This is obtained by comparing empirical observations of the weighted generalised Hurst exponent (wGHE) with time series simulated via Multifractal Random Walk (MRW) by Bacry \textit{et al.} [\textit{E.Bacry, J.Delour and J.Muzy, Phys.Rev.E \,{\bf 64} 026103, 2001}]. While dynamical wGHE computed on synthetic MRW series is consistent with a scenario where multifractality is constant over time, fluctuations in the dynamical wGHE observed in empirical data are not in agreement with a MRW with constant intermittency parameter. We test these hypotheses of constant multifractality considering different specifications of MRW model with fatter tails: in all cases considered, although the thickness of the tails accounts for most of anomalous fluctuations of multifractality, still cannot fully explain the observed fluctuations.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure

    Coalition Resilient Outcomes in Max k-Cut Games

    We investigate strong Nash equilibria in the \emph{max kk-cut game}, where we are given an undirected edge-weighted graph together with a set {1,
,k}\{1,\ldots, k\} of kk colors. Nodes represent players and edges capture their mutual interests. The strategy set of each player vv consists of the kk colors. When players select a color they induce a kk-coloring or simply a coloring. Given a coloring, the \emph{utility} (or \emph{payoff}) of a player uu is the sum of the weights of the edges {u,v}\{u,v\} incident to uu, such that the color chosen by uu is different from the one chosen by vv. Such games form some of the basic payoff structures in game theory, model lots of real-world scenarios with selfish agents and extend or are related to several fundamental classes of games. Very little is known about the existence of strong equilibria in max kk-cut games. In this paper we make some steps forward in the comprehension of it. We first show that improving deviations performed by minimal coalitions can cycle, and thus answering negatively the open problem proposed in \cite{DBLP:conf/tamc/GourvesM10}. Next, we turn our attention to unweighted graphs. We first show that any optimal coloring is a 5-SE in this case. Then, we introduce xx-local strong equilibria, namely colorings that are resilient to deviations by coalitions such that the maximum distance between every pair of nodes in the coalition is at most xx. We prove that 11-local strong equilibria always exist.     Conversion of the Mycotoxin Patulin to the Less Toxic Desoxypatulinic Acid by the Biocontrol Yeast Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae Strain LS11

    Se describe en este artĂ­culo el descubrimiento de la degradaciĂłn de la micotoxina patulina por una levaduraThe infection of stored apples by the fungus Penicillium expansum causes the contamination of fruits and fruit-derived products with the mycotoxin patulin, which is a major issue in food safety. Fungal attack can be prevented by beneficial microorganisms, so-called biocontrol agents. Previous time-course thin layer chromatography analyses showed that the aerobic incubation of patulin with the biocontrol yeast Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae strain LS11 leads to the disappearance of the mycotoxin spot and the parallel emergence of two new spots, one of which disappears over time. In this work, we analyzed the biodegradation of patulin effected by LS11 through HPLC. The more stable of the two compounds was purified and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance as desoxypatulinic acid, whose formation was also quantitated in patulin degradation experiments. After R. kratochvilovae LS11 had been incubated in the presence of 13C-labeled patulin, label was traced to desoxypatulinic acid, thus proving that this compound derives from the metabolization of patulin by the yeast. Desoxypatulinic acid was much less toxic than patulin to human lymphocytes and, in contrast to patulin, did not react in vitro with the thiol-bearing tripeptide glutathione. The lower toxicity of desoxypatulinic acid is proposed to be a consequence of the hydrolysis of the lactone ring and the loss of functional groups that react with thiol groups. The formation of desoxypatulinic acid from patulin represents a novel biodegradation pathway that is also a detoxification process

    Following the submission of application EFSA‐GMO‐RX‐002 under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 from Monsanto Company, the Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms of EFSA (GMO) was asked to deliver a scientific risk assessment on the data submitted in the context of the renewal of authorisation application for the herbicide‐tolerant genetically modified oilseed rape GT73. The data received in the context of this renewal application contained post‐market environmental monitoring reports, a systematic search and evaluation of literature, updated bioinformatic analyses and additional documents or studies performed by or on behalf of the applicant. The GMO Panel assessed these data for possible new hazards, modified exposure or new scientific uncertainties identified during the authorisation period and not previously assessed in the context of the original application. Under the assumption that the DNA sequence of the event in oilseed rape GT73 considered for renewal of authorisation is identical to the sequence of the originally assessed event, the GMO Panel concludes that there is no evidence in renewal application EFSA‐GMO‐RX‐002 for new hazards, modified exposure or scientific uncertainties that would change the conclusions of the original risk assessment on oilseed rape GT73

    The LHCf experiment at LHC

    The LHCf experiment will be installed in 2007 on the LHC collider in the forward direction at ±140m from the ATLAS interaction point. The purpose of LHCf is to precisely measure the pion production cross section near zero degrees through the measurement of the photons produced in neutral pion decay. This measurement is crucial for the simulation of the showers induced in the atmosphere by very high energy cosmic rays; the 14 TeV energy available in the center of mass frame corresponds in fact to an equivalent energy of 1017 eV in the laboratory system. The paper focus on the proposed experiment and on the physics results that we expect from it

    Forward photon energy spectrum at LHC 7 TeV p-p collisions measured by LHCf

    Abstract The LHCf experiment is one of the LHC forward experiments. The aim is to measure the energy and the transverse momentum spectra of photons, neutrons and π 0 's at the very forward region (the pseudo-rapidity range of η > 8.4 ), which should be critical data to calibrate hadron interaction models used in the air shower simulations. LHCf successfully operated at s = 900 GeV and s = 7 TeV proton–proton collisions in 2009 and 2010. We present the first physics result, single photon energy spectra at s = 7 TeV proton–proton collisions and the pseudo-rapidity ranges of η > 10.94 and 8.81 η 8.9 . The obtained spectra were compared with the predictions by several hadron interaction models and the models do not reproduce the experimental results perfectly
