Effect of dithiocarbamate thiram on Wistar rat growth plate and articular cartilage

The objective of this study is to identify and analyse the main characteristics of areas potentially degraded by desertification and of preserved areas using the Soil Surface Moisture Index (SSMI), alongside the Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The study is based on a set of points obtained in the field and from the RGB false colour image for the Environmental Protection Areas (EPA) of the Cariri, in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, using a space-time cross-section covering both rainy and dry periods. The results showed that at all points in Desertified Areas, the main characteristics were a low SSMI, high LST and low NDVI in both periods. The Preserved Areas, on the other hand, presented a high SSMI, moderate LST and high NDVI in the rainy period, with the same characteristics repeated in the dry period for SSMI and NDVI, but with a low LST. Timely identification of these characteristics, both in areas degraded by desertification and in better preserved areas, can provide useful information for future decisions relating to the physical and territorial management of the Conservation Unit.

Delineation of management zones using mobile measurements of soil apparent electrical conductivity and multivariate geostatistical techniques

Site-specific management promotes the identification and management of areas within the field, which represent subfield regions with homogeneous characteristics (management zones). However, determination of subfield areas is difficult because of the complex combination of factors which could affect crop yield. One possibility to capture yield variability is the use of soil physical properties to define the management zones as they are related to plant available water. With the aim of characterizing the spatial variability of the main soil physical variables and using this information to determine potential management zones, soil samples were taken from 70 locations in a 33-ha field in Badajoz, southwestern Spain. Firstly, accurate spatial distribution maps of the soil attributes were generated by using regression kriging as the most suitable algorithm in which exhaustive secondary information on soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) was incorporated. ECa measurements were carried out with a Veris 3100 operating in both shallow (0–30 cm), ECs, and deep (0–90 cm), ECd,mode. Clay, coarse sand and fine sand were the soil physical properties which exhibited higher correlation with ECa (positively correlated with the finer texture component, clay, and negatively correlated with the coarser ones, coarse and fine sands), particularly with ECs. Thus, this was the secondary variable used to obtain the kriged maps. Later, principal component analysis and fuzzy cluster classification were performed to delineate management zones, resulting in two subfields to be managed separately. This number of subfields was determined using the fuzzy performance index and normalized classification entropy as the way to optimize the classification algorithm

The histological alterations and the expression of metallothionein (MTs) and heat shock protein (Hsp70) in the kidney of Wistar rats after thiram fungicide exposure were evaluated. Animals were distributed into three groups: standard diet group, standard diet + corn oil group and thiram group. Significant differences were found (P<0,05) in the evolution of body weight between rats in the thiram group and those in the control and corn oil groups, and no histological lesions were evident in the animals' kidneys. Differences were found among animals in the group exposed to thiram and the control and oil groups regarding histomorphometric characteristics of the renal corpuscle - except for the proportion in the area of Bowman's capsule: glomerulus area - and regarding the height of the epitelium in the distal tubules. In rats exposed to thiram, a positive moderate to strong immunoexpression was observed for MTs, in the cortical convulated tubules decreasing the cortex towards the medulla, and a strong immunoexpression for Hsp70 in the cortex and medulla areas, in the glomerulus and convulated tubules. The results suggest that thiram may have chronic toxicity in mammals affecting their growth, and that the expression of MTs and Hsp70, a probable cellular adaptive response to the oxidative stress caused by thiram, may be used as a biomarker of exposure to this chemical.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell operation and degradation in short-circuit.

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents an experimental study dealing with operation and degradation during an electrical short circuit of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack. The physical quantities in the fuel cell (electrical voltage and current, gas stoichiometry, pressures, temperatures and gas humidity) are studied before, during and after the failure. After a short circuit occurs, a high peak of current appears but decreases to stabilize in a much lower value. The voltage drops in all the cells and even some cells presents reversal potentials. The degradation is quantified by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Soil apparent electrical conductivity and geographically weighted regression for mapping soil

To resolve the spatial variation in soil properties intensively is expensive, but such knowledge is essential to manage the soil better and to achieve greater economic and environmental benefits. The objective of this study was to determine whether the soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa), alone or combined with other variables, is a useful alternative for providing detailed information on the soil in the Extremadura region of Spain. Apparent soil electrical conductivity was measured and geographically weighted regression was used to characterize the spatial variation in soil properties, which in turn can be used for soil management. This study shows that soil cation exchange capacity, calcium content, clay percentage and pH have a relatively strong spatial correlation with ECa in the soil of the study area
