- FIRM-SPECIFIC TEMPORAL VARIATION IN TECHNICAL EFFICENCY RESULTS OF: A STOCHASTIC OUTPUT DISTANCE FUNCTION

The aim of this paper is to test the temporal variation of technical efficiency of the Spanish Savings Banks during the period 1985-1994. Furthermore, a stochastic output distance function (Shephard, 1970) is employed to accommodate multiple output technology. The distance function provides the advantage that it does not need information about prices, so it can accommodate the multiproduct nature of the financial sector only using the quantitiesas data. The temporal variation of efficiency is modeled using an extension of Battese and Coelli (1992), allowing for firm-specific patterns of temporal change. El objetivo de este trabajo es contrastar la variación temporal de la eficiencia técnica de las Cajas de Ahorros españolas durante el periodo 1985-1994. Para ello la tecnología se modeliza a través de la función de distancia (Shephard, 1970) y el término de ineficiencia se especifica mediante una generalización del modelo propuesto por Battese y Coelli (1992). La función de distancia tiene la ventaja de que puede recoger tecnologías multiproducto sin precisar de información acerca de precios. Esta ventaja es mayor en un sector como el bancario en el que, generalmente, los precios se construyen a partir de gastos, lo cual podría suponer un problema. Theoretical discussions regarding the demise of industrial society in the work horizon of the new millenium

Partiendo del supuesto del ‘fin de la sociedad industrial’, como postulado teórico ampliamente compartido dentro del marco de las ciencias sociales contemporáneas, se hace necesario indagar sobre los escenarios laborales emergidos en las sociedades occidentales una vez efectuada la reducción del mundo fabril a su mínima expresión, tras un proceso de sostenido declive del sector secundario generado a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. En este nuevo panorama asistimos al debate entre tres interpretaciones contrapuestas que compiten ideológicamente en dispar relación de fuerzas por dotar de sentido al mundo del trabajo del siglo XXI. Environmental Efficiency Measurement with Translog Distance Functions: A Parametric Approach

We use a flexible parametric hyperbolic distance function to estimate environmental efficiency when some outputs are undesirable. Cuesta and Zofio (J. Prod. Analysis (2005), 31-48) introduced this distance function specification in conventional input-output space to estimate technical efficiency within a stochastic frontier context. We extend their approach to accommodate undesirable outputs and to estimate environmental efficiency within a stochastic frontier context. This provides a parametric counterpart to Färe et al.’s popular nonparametric environmental efficiency measures (Rev. Econ. Stat. 75 (1989), 90-98). In an increasingly globalized economy, transnational corporations tend to introduce important changes in their affiliated companies, including those changes with cultural implications. The implementation of uniform organization methods in diverse workplace contexts, regardless of local cultural patterns, may result in the imposition of foreign work concepts and views on workplace relations, cognitive processes, the company's hierarchy, etc. If the encounter between the International and the local is not handled with enough care, tensions and conflicts might ensue that could hinder the company's performance. The author gives the example of Suzuki Corporation and its affiliated Santana Motor in the town of Linares, province of Jaén, Spain.En un mundo cada vez más globalizado, las firmas transnacionales tienden a introducir importantes cambios en sus empresas filiales, incluidos los que afectan a la dimensión cultural. Giant Bilateral Renal Angiomyolipomas and Lymphangioleiomyomatosis Presenting after Two Successive Pregnancies Successfully Treated with Surgery and Rapamycin

We report the case of a 25-year-old woman who presented with abdominal and flank pain with two successive pregnancies and was diagnosed of giant bilateral renal AMLs and pulmonary LAM associated with TSC in the post-partum of her second pregnancy. This case illustrates that in women with TSC rapid growth from renal AMLs and development of LAM may occur with successive pregnancies. It also stresses the potential for preservation of renal function despite successive bilateral renal surgery of giant AMLs. Moreover, the treatment with a low-dose rapamycin may be an option for LAM treatment. Finally, a low-dose rapamycin may be considered as an adjuvant treatment together to kidney-sparing conservative surgery for renal AMLs
