Unity in diversity : a design projection for a participatory housing in Kuala Lumpur

Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1992.Includes bibliographical references (p. 96-98).This thesis is an exploration towards an alternative design approach for a public housing in Malaysia. It stems from a conviction that the design of public housing should be based on the lifestyles and ways of living of the people it is intended for. Since the Malaysian people are composed of three diverse cultures: Malay, Chinese, and Indian, this thesis proposes a participatory approach which allows each group to accommodate their cultural needs in the design of their dwelling places. Recognizing that public and communal activities are very much a part of the living environment, the thesis attempts to accommodate these activities into the design process. Because each of the three cultures has different ways and needs, the design of both private dwellings and public/communal spaces is based on the supports concept, which is organized around a system of frameworks. This thesis is the second part of a two part work: Part I is a research of the various types of dwellings: traditional, squatter, and public housing; to discover the important principles and elements that persist in all the dwelling types shared by Malays, Chinese and Indians. Part II is a design projection of those principles for a participatory housing project in Kuala Lumpur, involving four of the thirty families surveyed in Part I research. The design exercise includes exploring various transformation possibilities to produce a whole range of variations that satisfy the needs of the diverse Malaysian cultures. Note: Part I and Part II are documented separately into a S.M.Arch.S and M.Arch theses respectively. Each document is a complete, independent thesis, but very much interrelated. A new framework for matching semantic web service descriptions based on OWL-S services
Nowadays, semantic web services are published and updated with growing demand for cloud computing. Since a single service is not capable of processing the increase of data and user's demand the improvement is necessary to match and rank semantic web service to achieve the user's goal. In the semantic web service framework, users' request is the input to the system and output is ranking of semantic web service. It has become a limitation to match between requests with the semantic web service description. This paper proposes a new framework for matching and ranking semantic web service based on OWL-S. The proposed new framework can match the keyword in each task and ranking service. This framework is done by using performance ontology-based indexing. The result is obtained and the performance of the services for multiple requests has been measured
Comparative Evaluation of String Metrics for Context Ontology Database
Static Context Code Coverage Program (SCCCP) is a program developed to calculate the coverage of context code in a Java file of an Android application. The database built for SCCCP includes records on location and speech context, exclusive to Android. There is a huge need for string matching algorithm since strings from the source codes and database have to be checked for any similarity first before moving on to the calculation of context coverage. Therefore, three different string metrics were analyzed prior to choosing the most suitable one for SCCCP. In this paper, the results obtained from using JaroWinkler, Levenshtein, and Strike a Match string distance metrics are analyzed based on the task of matching the source codes with database records and other pair of strings. Some issues related during our experiment on source code matching are discussed in this paper. The findings conclude that Strike a Match algorithm is the best option since it gives the highest accuracy among others
Enhanced Classification Tree Method for Modeling Pairwise Testing
Software testing is one of the most important activities to produce a high-quality system, which can increase the trust level of users. There are many types of software testing. One of those testing is called exhaustive testing. Exhaustive testing is used to produce a test suite that will be used in other testing types such as unit testing, system testing, integration testing and also acceptance testing. However, exhaustive testing is infeasible and will be time consuming. Therefore, the combinatorial testing is proposed to solve the exhaustive testing problem. There are many techniques of combinatorial testing. The popular one is called pairwise testing. It also is known as Allpairs or 2-way testing. It involves the interaction of 2 parameters. In order to perform the pairwise testing, there are procedures that need to be fulfilled. The first procedure is modeling of System Under Test (SUT). There are many models that can be used to design the test suite for pairwise testing. In this paper, the comparison for modeling of SUT in pairwise testing is performed, and the enhancement of Classification Tree Method is proposed. An example based on steps of proposed model method is also provided
Ontology validation algorithm on data driven approach and vocabulary aspect
Ontology evaluation is required before using the ontology within applications. Similar with software practice, the purpose of ontology evaluation is to identify the achievement of requirement criteria. Users who require coverage criteria often seeking ontology that contain the terms related to their focused domain knowledge. Users encounter the difficulty to select a suitable ontology from variety of ontology evaluation approaches. Conceptualization of information related to ontology evaluation helps to identify the important component within ontology that helps towards coverage criteria achievement. This work proposes an algorithm to extract ontology documents gained from public ontology repositories like Falcons into its vocabulary parts focused on classes and literals. The algorithm then processes the extracted ontology components with similarity algorithm and later displays the result on the coverage match of ontology with provided terms and the terms that are synonym expanded using WordNet
Service-oriented design measurement and theoretical validation
As software systems become more and more complex over time, software quality accordingly becomes increasingly important. Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) paradigm is one of the established paradigms used for building and developing flexible, reusable, rapid and low cost software products. Consequently, the use of SOC to develop software systems is increasing. Software quality measurement has considerable importance in the context of SOC since it determines how the quality requirements for composite service should be achieved. As a result, several quality metrics for composite service design were proposed. However, these metrics were constructed based on previous development approaches, give insufficient focus and need modification to be applied to service-oriented systems. Furthermore, the existing metrics do not consider the composite service as building blocks and also they do not consider the indirect relationships. In this paper, a quality measurement for composite service-oriented design is proposed, with the aim of increasing reusability and decreasing the complexity of design. The paper begins with proposing a set of metrics to measure the quality of composite service design. Then, the proposed metrics are validated theoretically to check its usability and applicability for composite service. The results show that the proposed metrics are able to measure the quality of composite service design
Context ontology in mobile applications
Mobile applications are expected to receive context input such as location, speech, and network from different context providers. Since context can be considered as knowledge, a
formal method is needed to capture this knowledge. There is less work on ontology model that could be reused to model a new context ontology for Android mobile application. Therefore, this study proposed an ontology specifically for Android mobile
application, COCCC, to formalize context knowledge present within it. METHONTOLOGY method was used to create COCCC ontology as it offers intermediate representation in the form of concepts. The concepts from the context ontology were extracted from various resources, sorted and categorized based on types and functions for standardization purposes. Survey was given to five domain experts for evaluation of COCCC ontology in terms of its usability. Data from these experts were analyzed
and the results have confirmed that the proposed context ontology is usable to Android mobile application developers
Cooling panel wall system with difference types of cooling mediums
Global warming has caused worldwide average surface temperature to rise about 0.74oC during the past 100 years, which is partly aggravated by air-conditioning that releases chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and forming a vicious cycle. This paper proposes a cooling house system that can promote thermal comfort in buildings without air-conditioning. The cooling panel wall forms a part of an Integrated Building System (IBS), and is essentially made of tubes filled with either water or glycerin as the coolant. Target strength for the panel wall was designed based on the Malaysian Standard (MS) while the building ventilation system followed the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standard. The results are reported based on indoor and outdoor temperature difference together with relative humidity to identify the best performing house model and also coolant. The outcome of this research is expected to add value to heritage house design concepts with a better promotion of air flow and circulation in the building, without over-usage of natural resources and higher building cost to achieve the same objective
DNA Isolation and Optimization of ISSR-PCR Reaction System in Oryza sativa L.
Inter simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) have been utilized widely for molecular markers in analyzing the genetic diversity and phylogenetic and regions in the genome flanked by microsatellite sequences. PCR amplification of these regions using a single primer yields multiple amplification products that can be used as a dominant multilocus marker system for the study of genetic variation in various organisms. For this study provides, DNA isolation, adjusting in six factors (Buffer, MgCl2, dNTPs, ISSR primers, Template DNA and Taq polymerase) at six levels, and optimization of PCR temperature for the ISSR reaction was 60-45 °C, primers screening on indica rice (Oryza sativa). In this research, simple method of DNA isolation by using seedling. The objective of the present investigation was to assess the optimizations and quantification. Has been shown that stalk enhanced the maximum value of genomic. The results show that 100 ISSR primers were examined as well as, 56 ISSR primers was productively amplified. Optimum components for PCR reactions were 5.0 μl of 5X PCR Buffer, 1.5 μl of 25mM MgCl2, 1 μl of 10 mM dNTP, 1 μl of 10 Μm ISSR primers, 2 μl Template DNA, and 0.1 μl of 5 units/ml Taq polymerase. Based on this study, has brought out some information on the relationship between these ISSR primers will be applied further for molecular profiling as well as response evaluation in rice varietie
Variability Management in Software Product Lines Online Learning Applications
The process of learning and teaching online learning has undergone many changes in line with technological developments. Education institutions have begun introducing new methods of learning this. However, it needs a huge amount of labor intensive to produce and maintain educational technologies due to its huge size (literacy, vocational education, school education, engineering and medical education) and huge variants (language, dialect). With the growing demand and at the same time would like to reduce the factor of cost, time and effort is long, then the need for an effective solution allowing rapid system development. A Software Product Line (SPL) approach is one of the best methods that can be used to develop an educational software family. This research focuses on core asset by recognizing and representing variability in variability management. The study employed two phases of activities in data gathering, there are filtering out data from secondary sources which detail out the features of e-learning and constructivist learning environment of each Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Second phase involved the use of expert interviews to determine the features of each higher institution elearning and identify Primitive Requirement of Malaysian Higher Education online learning. Commonality and Variability Analysis (CV Analysis) method has been used as identification of commonality and variability. This analysis is to develop a feature model which further helps in visual representation variants requirements and enhance reusability in the context of product line approaches. As a result, there are 20 Primitive Requirements (PR) has been identified and clearly divided into two categories, common and optional. The frequency in each application of online learning is used to determine whether the PR is reusable. The identification and representation will increase the potential for reuse and help in publishing the specific requirements of the application in the development of the product line
