    Consequences of asteroid fragmentation during impact hazard mitigation

    The consequences of the fragmentation of an Earth-threatening asteroid due to an attempted deflection are examined in this paper. The minimum required energy for a successful impulsive deflection of a threatening object is computed and compared to the energy required to break up a small size asteroid. The results show that the fragmentation of an asteroid that underwent an impulsive deflection, such as a kinetic impact or a nuclear explosion, is a very plausible event.Astatistical model is used to approximate the number and size of the fragments as well as the distribution of velocities at the instant after the deflection attempt takes place. This distribution of velocities is a function of the energy provided by the deflection attempt, whereas the number and size of the asteroidal fragments is a function of the size of the largest fragment. The model also takes into account the gravity forces that could lead to a reaggregation of the asteroid after fragmentation. The probability distribution of the pieces after the deflection is then propagated forward in time until the encounter with Earth. A probability damage factor (i.e., expected damage caused by a given size fragment multiplied by its impact probability) is then computed and analyzed for different plausible scenarios, characterized by different levels of deflection energies and lead times

    Neutrino-driven Turbulent Convection and Standing Accretion Shock Instability in Three-Dimensional Core-Collapse Supernovae

    We conduct a series of numerical experiments into the nature of three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamics in the postbounce stalled-shock phase of core-collapse supernovae using 3D general-relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of a 2727-MM_\odot progenitor star with a neutrino leakage/heating scheme. We vary the strength of neutrino heating and find three cases of 3D dynamics: (1) neutrino-driven convection, (2) initially neutrino-driven convection and subsequent development of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI), (3) SASI dominated evolution. This confirms previous 3D results of Hanke et al. 2013, ApJ 770, 66 and Couch & Connor 2014, ApJ 785, 123. We carry out simulations with resolutions differing by up to a factor of \sim4 and demonstrate that low resolution is artificially favorable for explosion in the 3D convection-dominated case, since it decreases the efficiency of energy transport to small scales. Low resolution results in higher radial convective fluxes of energy and enthalpy, more fully buoyant mass, and stronger neutrino heating. In the SASI-dominated case, lower resolution damps SASI oscillations. In the convection-dominated case, a quasi-stationary angular kinetic energy spectrum E()E(\ell) develops in the heating layer. Like other 3D studies, we find E()1E(\ell) \propto \ell^{-1} in the "inertial range," while theory and local simulations argue for E()5/3E(\ell) \propto \ell^{-5/3}. We argue that current 3D simulations do not resolve the inertial range of turbulence and are affected by numerical viscosity up to the energy containing scale, creating a "bottleneck" that prevents an efficient turbulent cascade.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures.     Trading HIV for sheep: Risky sexual behavior and the response of female sex workers to Tabaski in Senegal

    We use a cohort of female sex workers (FSWs) in Senegal to show how large anticipated economic shocks lead to increased risky sexual behavior. Exploiting the exogenous timing of interviews, we study the effect of Tabaski, the most important Islamic festival celebrated in Senegal, in which most households purchase an expensive animal for sacrifice. Condom use, measured robustly via the list experiment, falls by between 27.3 percentage points (pp) (65.5%) and 43.1 pp (22.7%) in the 9 days before Tabaski, or a maximum of 49.5 pp (76%) in the 7 day period preceding Tabaski. The evidence suggests the economic pressures from Tabaski are key to driving the behavior change observed through the price premium for condomless sex. Those most exposed to the economic pressure from Tabaski were unlikely to be using condoms at all in the week before the festival. Our findings show that Tabaski leads to increased risky behaviors for FSWs, a key population at high risk of HIV infection, for at least 1 week every year and has implications for FSWs in all countries celebrating Tabaski or similar festivals. Because of the scale, frequency, and size of the behavioral response to shocks of this type, policy should be carefully designed to protect vulnerable women against anticipated shocks

    La micropropagación en escala comercial de kiwi (Actinidia chinensis Planch.) cv.Hayward fue posible a partir de la siembra de ápices extraídos de yemas dormidas.El establecimiento y crecimiento del explanto se logró con el cultivo en medio MS(1962). los compuestos orgánicos de Standards (1983),209. L-1 sacarosa, sin auxinasy con el agregado de 1 mg. L-1 de BAy 0,1 mg. L-1 de GA3. El empleo de ANA determinó la formación de un callo basal y el crecimiento anormal de la yema.La brotación de las yemas axilares se obtuvo con un medio compuesto por las sales de MS, los componentes orgánicos de Standards (1983) e idéntica composición de reguladores del crecimiento. En esta forma se obtuvieron 4-5 brotes por expíenlo cada 30 días, en condiciones de iniciar el enraizamiento. Esto se logró con la reducción al 50% de los macro-nutrientes de MS, IBA y PPZ, éstos últimos a razón de1 mg.L-1. El porcentaje de enraizamiento llegó al 95% al cabo de 30 días, con la producción de cerca de 1000 plantitas usticadas.Abreviaturas.     Critical Phenomena in Neutron Stars I: Linearly Unstable Nonrotating Models

    We consider the evolution in full general relativity of a family of linearly unstable isolated spherical neutron stars under the effects of very small, perturbations as induced by the truncation error. Using a simple ideal-fluid equation of state we find that this system exhibits a type-I critical behaviour, thus confirming the conclusions reached by Liebling et al. [1] for rotating magnetized stars. Exploiting the relative simplicity of our system, we are able carry out a more in-depth study providing solid evidences of the criticality of this phenomenon and also to give a simple interpretation of the putative critical solution as a spherical solution with the unstable mode being the fundamental F-mode. Hence for any choice of the polytropic constant, the critical solution will distinguish the set of subcritical models migrating to the stable branch of the models of equilibrium from the set of subcritical models collapsing to a black hole. Finally, we study how the dynamics changes when the numerically perturbation is replaced by a finite-size, resolution independent velocity perturbation and show that in such cases a nearly-critical solution can be changed into either a sub or supercritical. The work reported here also lays the basis for the analysis carried in a companion paper, where the critical behaviour in the the head-on collision of two neutron stars is instead considered [2].Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    The time of the Roma in times of crisis: Where has European neoliberal capitalism failed?

    This paper argues that the economic and financial crisis that has ensnared Europe from the late 2000s has been instrumental in reshaping employment and social relations in a detrimental way for the majority of the European people. It argues that the crisis has exacerbated the socio-economic position of most Roma people, immigrants as well as of other vulnerable groups. This development is approached here as an outcome of the widening structural inequalities that underpin the crisis within an increasingly neoliberalised Europe. Through recent policy developments and public discourses from a number of European countries I show how rising inequalities nurture racialised social tensions. My account draws on classic and contemporary theoretical propositions that have been propounded about the nature of capitalism, its contemporary re-articulation as well as its ramification for the future of Europe

    Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the so-called ESKAPE pathogens. These organisms are the main cause of nosocomial infections worldwide, causing life-threatening infections amongst critically ill and immunocompromised individuals. They are characterized by drug resistance mechanisms. Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing isolates display resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents, usually including last-resort alternative options, leading to an urgent need to develop new drugs or combinations. In Argentina sequence type (ST) 258 harbouring bla KPC-2 emerged in 2010 and remained prevalent until the last few years, when the emergence of different STs such as ST25, ST11 and ST307 appeared likely to change the local epidemiology.Fil: García, J..     Three little pieces for computer and relativity

    Numerical relativity has made big strides over the last decade. A number of problems that have plagued the field for years have now been mostly solved. This progress has transformed numerical relativity into a powerful tool to explore fundamental problems in physics and astrophysics, and I present here three representative examples. These "three little pieces" reflect a personal choice and describe work that I am particularly familiar with. However, many more examples could be made.Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures.
