    Exactly solvable model of three interacting particles in an external magnetic field

    The quantum mechanical problem of three identical particles, moving in a plane and interacting pairwise via a spring potential, is solved exactly in the presence of a magnetic field. Calculations of the pair--correlation function, mean distance and the cluster area show a quantization of these parameters. Especially the pair-correlation function exhibits a certain number of maxima given by a quantum number. We obtain Jastrow pre-factors which lead to an exchange correlation hole of liquid type, even in the presence of the attractive interaction between the identical electrons.Comment: 8 pages 3 figure

    Transition from Townsend to glow discharge: subcritical, mixed or supercritical

    The full parameter space of the transition from Townsend to glow discharge is investigated numerically in one space dimension in the classical model: with electrons and positive ions drifting in the local electric field, impact ionization by electrons (α\alpha process), secondary electron emission from the cathode (γ\gamma process) and space charge effects. We also perform a systematic analytical small current expansion about the Townsend limit up to third order in the total current that fits our numerical data very well. Depending on γ\gamma and system size pd, the transition from Townsend to glow discharge can show the textbook subcritical behavior, but for smaller values of pd, we also find supercritical or some intermediate ``mixed'' behavior. The analysis in particular lays the basis for understanding the complex spatio-temporal patterns in planar barrier discharge systems.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    The Whole Genome Sequence of Sphingobium chlorophenolicum L-1: Insights into the Evolution of the Pentachlorophenol Degradation Pathway

    Sphingobium chlorophenolicum Strain L-1 can mineralize the toxic pesticide pentachlorophenol (PCP). We have sequenced the genome of S. chlorophenolicum Strain L-1. The genome consists of a primary chromosome that encodes most of the genes for core processes, a secondary chromosome that encodes primarily genes that appear to be involved in environmental adaptation, and a small plasmid. The genes responsible for degradation of PCP are found on chromosome 2. We have compared the genomes of S. chlorophenolicum Strain L-1 and Sphingobium japonicum, a closely related Sphingomonad that degrades lindane. Our analysis suggests that the genes encoding the first three enzymes in the PCP degradation pathway were acquired via two different horizontal gene transfer events, and the genes encoding the final two enzymes in the pathway were acquired from the most recent common ancestor of these two bacteria

    Single electron transistors: Modeling and fabrication

    Traditional conduction models for metal island films on insulating substrates are based on electrostatically activated tunneling, but underestimate actual conductances by orders of magnitude. A modified model has made significant headway with this problem, as demonstrated by simulations. The simplest discontinuous "film" is the single island coulomb block, which forms the basis of the single-electron transistor (SET). Room temperature SETs employ chains of islands, i.e. 1-D discontinuous films. The conventional numerical SET model is extended by application of the discontinuous thin film (DTF) work. Practical applications of discontinuous films are impeded by the difficulty of fabricating reproducible, stable structures, particularly for low TCR films which are the most susceptible to drift. Similar difficulties are experienced with SET islands, and a technique to manufacture stable and reproducible DTFs and SETs is described
