    Paleobiology of a Large Mammal Community From the Late Pleistocene of Sonora, Mexico

    A paleontological deposit near San Clemente de TĂ©rapa represents one of the very few Rancholabrean North American Land Mammal Age sites within Sonora, Mexico. During that time, grasslands were common, and the climate included cooler and drier summers and wetter winters than currently experienced in northern Mexico. Here, we demonstrate restructuring in the mammalian community associated with environmental change over the past 40,000 years at TĂ©rapa. The fossil community has a similar number of carnivores and herbivores whereas the modern community consists mostly of carnivores. There was also a 97% decrease in mean body size (from 289 kg to 9 kg) because of the loss of megafauna. We further provide an updated review of ungulates and carnivores, recognizing two distinct morphotypes of Equus, including E. scotti and a slighter species; as well as Platygonus compressus; Camelops hesternus; Canis dirus; and Lynx rufus; and the first regional records of Palaeolama mirifica, Procyon lotor, and Smilodon cf. S. fatalis. The TĂ©rapa mammals presented here provide a more comprehensive understanding of the faunal community restructuring that occurred in northern Mexico from the late Pleistocene to present day, indicating further potential biodiversity loss with continued warming and drying of the region

    "<i>Do Your Homework as Your Heart Takes over When You Go Looking</i>": Factors Associated with Pre-Acquisition Information-Seeking among Prospective UK Dog Owners.

    The factors influencing why and how people decide to acquire a dog are not well understood and little is known about the extent to which prospective owners undertake preparatory research. This study aimed to better understand what factors influence whether prospective dog owners in the UK conduct preparatory research. A 2019 online survey of current (n = 8050) and potential (n = 2884) dog owners collected quantitative and qualitative data. Additional qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with current (n = 166) and potential (n = 10) dog owners. Of the current owners surveyed, 54% stated that they had looked for advice or information prior to acquiring their dog. Of potential owners, 68% reported already having looked for information, while a further 14% were planning to undertake research prior to acquiring a dog. Those with previous dog ownership experience were less likely to undertake pre-acquisition research, as were those who had worked with dogs. Demographic factors were also associated with the likelihood of conducting pre-acquisition research, with younger prospective owners being more likely to have undertaken research, as well as those with formal education qualifications. Among current owners, pre-acquisition research was more likely among those who acquired their dog through a breeder; a specific breed or a mix of two breeds; or as a puppy. Qualitative data were consistent with and added additional understanding and context to these findings. Almost half of current owners did not conduct pre-acquisition research, highlighting the need for increased awareness of its importance and the development of targeted interventions to encourage this activity. Understanding the different factors that influence whether dog owners undertake research may be of interest to animal welfare and veterinary organisations, in order to inform interventions to better prepare people for dog acquisition

    Improving Translational Relevance in Preclinical Psychopharmacology (iTRIPP)

    Animal models are important in preclinical psychopharmacology to study mechanisms and potential treatments for psychiatric disorders. A working group of 14 volunteers, comprising an international team of researchers from academia and industry, convened in 2021 to discuss how to improve the translational relevance and interpretation of findings from animal models that are used in preclinical psychopharmacology. The following paper distils the outcomes of the working group’s discussions into 10 key considerations for the planning and reporting of behavioural studies in animal models relevant to psychiatric disorders. These form the iTRIPP guidelines (Improving Translational Relevance In Preclinical Psychopharmacology). These guidelines reflect the key considerations that the group thinks will likely have substantial impact in terms of improving the translational relevance of behavioural studies in animal models that are used to study psychiatric disorders and their treatment. They are relevant to the research community when drafting and reviewing manuscripts, presentations and grant applications. The iTRIPP guidelines are intended to complement general recommendations for planning and reporting animal studies that have been published elsewhere, by enabling researchers to fully consider the most appropriate animal model for the research purpose and to interpret their findings appropriately. This in turn will increase the clinical benefit of such research and is therefore important not only for the scientific community but also for patients and the lay public

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage. We did subgroup analyses of the RESTART trial to explore whether these brain imaging features modify the effects of antiplatelet therapy

    Depression is one of the most common reasons for consulting a General Practitioner (GP) within the UK. Whilst antidepressants have been shown to be clinically effective, many patients and healthcare professionals would like to access other forms of treatment as an alternative or adjunct to drug therapy for depression.     The impact of the SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic and COVID‐19 on lung transplantation in the UK: Lessons learned from the first wave

    BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation is particularly susceptible to the impact of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, and evaluation of changes to practice is required to inform future decision-making. METHODS: A retrospective review of the UK Transplant Registry (UKTR) and national survey of UK lung transplant centers has been performed. RESULTS: There was geographic variation in the prevalence of COVID-19 infection across the UK. The number of donors fell by 48% during the early pandemic period. Lung utilization fell to 10% (compared with 24% for the same period of 2019). The number of lung transplants performed fell by 77% from 53, March to May 2019, to 12. Seven (58%) of these were performed in a single-center, designated "COVID-light." The number of patients who died on the lung transplant waiting list increased, compared to the same period of 2019 (p = .0118). Twenty-six lung transplant recipients with confirmed COVID-19 infection were reported during the study period. CONCLUSION: As the pandemic continues, reviewing practice and implementing the lessons learned during this period, including the use of robust donor testing strategies and the provision of "COVID-light" hospitals, are vital in ensuring the safe continuation of our lung transplant program
