Les Spartiates et la mer Ve s. av. J.-C. : des amiraux qui n’aimaient pas la mer

Against Persians, in 480, the Greeks of the Hellenic League chose to be under the command of the Spartans, on sea as on land. Again for the end of the 5th century, Greek authors speak of Spartan hegemonia on land and sea. Actually, Spartans are very bad in sea-fight because they don’t understand its rules and they are afraid when they meet a good fleet or a bad weather. Their victories are generally on the sea-shore, not in open sea : even Lysander, the best of their navarchs, won on shore at Aigos Potamoi. Even their coastal territory is not well protected. It seems as if there was a kind of inadequacy between Spartan way of life and maritime activity, with some contempt for the maritime tekhnè. So the Spartan superiority was only and exclusively on land, even when authors speak of their universal hegemony.

L’Utopie spartiate

Malgré les témoignages contraires des plus anciens textes sur Sparte, cette cité est devenue, par l’intermédiaire de Plutarque, une source d’inspiration privilégiée pour les utopistes, notamment dans les grandes périodes de bouillonnement idéologique et politique. Autour des trois thèmes essentiels que furent l’harmonie sociale, la formation des esprits et le patriotisme, sont privilégiés ici l’époque des Lumières, la Révolution française et le National-Socialisme, périodes dans lesquelles le modèle spartiate était sans cesse invoqué. Sparte pâtit encore d’avoir été prise comme modèle par des régimes totalitaires.In spite of the oldest texts about Sparta, this city, owing to Plutarch’s Lives, inspired many utopians, especially in times of great ideological and political ferments. We set out its specificities and show the crucial significance of organizational uncertainty and knowledge management. We explain that economic coordination and complex reliability issues in firm strategies can be simulated by experimental economics and exhaustively explained by a simple and general economic model based on bounded rationalityCognitive Economics, ERP, BPR, shared mental models, ICT practice.
