    Do internal software quality tools measure validated metrics?

    Internal software quality determines the maintainability of the software product and influences the quality in use. There is a plethora of metrics which purport to measure the internal quality of software, and these metrics are offered by static software analysis tools. To date, a number of reports have assessed the validity of these metrics. No data are available, however, on whether metrics offered by the tools are somehow validated in scientific studies. The current study covers this gap by providing data on which tools and how many validated metrics are provided. The results show that a range of metrics that the tools provided do not seem to be validated in the literature and that only a small percentage of metrics are validated in the provided tools

    Mutational analysis of Polycomb genes in solid tumours identifies <i>PHC3</i> amplification as a possible cancer-driving genetic alteration.

    Background: Polycomb group genes (PcGs) are epigenetic effectors implicated in most cancer hallmarks. The mutational status of all PcGs has never been systematically assessed in solid tumours. Methods: We conducted a multi-step analysis on publically available databases and patient samples to identify somatic aberrations of PcGs. Results: Data from more than 1000 cancer patients show for the first time that the PcG member PHC3 is amplified in three epithelial neoplasms (rate: 8–35%). This aberration predicts poorer prognosis in lung and uterine carcinomas (Po0.01). Gene amplification correlates with mRNA overexpression (Po0.01), suggesting a functional role of this aberration. Conclusion: PHC3 amplification may emerge as a biomarker and potential therapeutic target in a relevant fraction of epithelial tumours

    Understanding the Interplay Among Regulatory Self-Efficacy, Moral Disengagement, and Academic Cheating Behaviour During Vocational Education: A Three-Wave Study

    The literature has suggested that to understand the diffusion of unethical conduct in the workplace, it is important to investigate the underlying processes sustaining engagement in misbehaviour and to study what occurs during vocational education. Drawing on social-cognitive theory, in this study, we longitudinally examined the role of two opposite dimensions of the self-regulatory moral system, regulatory self-efficacy and moral disengagement, in influencing academic cheating behaviour. In addition, in line with the theories highlighting the bidirectional relationship between cognitive processes and behaviour, we aimed to also examine the reciprocal influence of behaviour on these dimensions over time. Overall, no previous studies have examined the longitudinal interplay between these variables. The sample included 866 (62.8% female) nursing students who were assessed three times annually from the beginning of their vocational education. The findings from a cross-lagged model confirmed that regulatory self-efficacy and moral disengagement have opposite influences on cheating behaviour, that regulatory self-efficacy negatively influences not only the engagement in misconduct but also the justification mechanisms that allow the divorce between moral standards and action, and that moral disengagement and cheating behaviour reciprocally support each other over time. Specifically, not only did moral disengagement influence cheating behaviour even when controlling for its prior levels, but also cheating behaviour affected moral disengagement one year later, controlling for its prior levels. These findings suggest that recourse to wrongdoing could gradually lead to further normalising this kind of behaviour and morally desensitising individuals to misconduct

    Non-adherence to antimicrobial treatment guidelines results in more broad-spectrum but not more appropriate therapy

    Mortality in patients admitted with sepsis is high and the increasing incidence of infections with multiresistant bacteria is a worldwide problem. Many hospitals have local antimicrobial guidelines to assure effective treatment and limit the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, thereby reducing the selection of resistant bacteria. We evaluated adherence to the antimicrobial treatment guidelines of our hospital in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with sepsis and assessed the in vitro susceptibility of isolated pathogens to the guideline-recommended treatment and the prescribed treatment. We included all adult patients with a known or suspected infection and two or more extended systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria. Patients who did not receive antimicrobial treatment, presented with infections not included in the guidelines, or had more than one possible focus of infection were excluded. A total of 276 ED visits (262 patients) were included. Guideline-concordant treatment was prescribed in 168 visits (61%). In the case of guideline-disconcordant treatment, 87% was more broad-spectrum than guideline-recommended treatment. A microbiological diagnosis was established in 96 visits (35%). The susceptibility of the pathogens isolated from patients treated with guideline-concordant treatment (n = 68) and guideline-disconcordant treatment (n = 28) to guideline-recommended treatment (91% versus 89%) and to prescribed treatment (91% versus 93%) was similar (p = 0.77 and p = 0.79, respectively). In conclusion, non-adherence to the guidelines occurred frequently and resulted in more broad-spectrum empirical therapy. This did not result in a higher rate of susceptibility of the isolated pathogens to the prescribed empirical therapy

Oncogenic viruses can induce transformation via expression of only a small number of viral genes. Therefore, the mechanisms by which oncogenic viruses cause cancer may provide clues as to which epigenetic alterations are critical in early carcinogenesis

    We present a review of the interplay between the evolution of circumstellar disks and the formation of planets, both from the perspective of theoretical models and dedicated observations. Based on this, we identify and discuss fundamental questions concerning the formation and evolution of circumstellar disks and planets which can be addressed in the near future with optical and infrared long-baseline interferometers.     Correlations of Gene Expression with Blood Lead Levels in Children with Autism Compared to Typically Developing Controls

    The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between gene expression and lead (Pb) levels in blood in children with autism (AU, n = 37) compared to typically developing controls (TD, n = 15). We postulated that, though lead levels did not differ between the groups, AU children might metabolize lead differently compared to TD children. RNA was isolated from blood and processed on Affymetrix microarrays. Separate analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) corrected for age and gender were performed for TD, AU, and all subjects (AU + TD). To reduce false positives, only genes that overlapped these three ANCOVAs were considered. Thus, 48 probe sets correlated with lead levels in both AU and TD subjects and were significantly different between the groups (p(Diagnosis × log2 Pb) < 0.05). These genes were related mainly to immune and inflammatory processes, including MHC Class II family members and CD74. A large number (n = 791) of probe sets correlated (P ≤ 0.05) with lead levels in TD but not in AU subjects; and many probe sets (n = 162) correlated (P ≤ 0.05) with lead levels in AU but not in TD subjects. Only 30 probe sets correlated (P ≤ 0.05) with lead levels in a similar manner in the AU and TD groups. These data show that AU and TD children display different associations between transcript levels and low levels of lead. We postulate that this may relate to the underlying genetic differences between the two groups, though other explanations cannot be excluded

    Assessment of 'on-treatment platelet reactivity' and relationship with cerebral micro-embolic signals in asymptomatic and symptomatic carotid stenosis

    INTRODUCTION: The relationship between on-treatment platelet reactivity and cerebral micro-embolic signals (MES) is unknown, and has not been previously simultaneously assessed in asymptomatic and symptomatic carotid stenosis patients. METHODS: Consecutive eligible patients with ≥ 50% asymptomatic or recently symptomatic carotid stenosis (≤ 4 weeks following TIA/ischaemic stroke) were recruited to this pilot study. Symptomatic patients were followed up to the ‘late’ phase (≥ 3 months) following symptom onset or carotid intervention; longitudinal data were analysed from symptomatic patients with data available at both time-points. Platelet function/reactivity was assessed with the PFA-100® to measure collagen-ADP (C-ADP) and collagen-epinephrine (C-EPI) closure times in citrate-anticoagulated whole blood. Bilateral simultaneous 1-hour transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) monitoring of the middle cerebral arteries was performed to classify patients as MES + ve or MES − ve. RESULTS: 31 patients with ≥ 50% asymptomatic and 46 with early symptomatic carotid stenosis or occlusion were included. 35 symptomatic patients were followed up to the late phase (23 following carotid intervention). Prevalence of ‘high on-treatment platelet reactivity’ (HTPR) on the C-EPI cartridge did not differ between asymptomatic and symptomatic patients overall, but was lower in ‘symptomatic post-intervention’ than asymptomatic patients on aspirin monotherapy (10% vs. 50%; p = 0.03). The prevalence of HTPR on the C-EPI cartridge decreased between the early and late phases in symptomatic patients (63% vs. 34%; p = 0.017), including those on aspirin monotherapy (p = 0.016). There were no significant differences in HTPR status between asymptomatic vs. early or late symptomatic MES + ve or MES − ve patients. DISCUSSION: Carotid interventional treatment, presumably in combination with resolution of the acute phase response, may decrease the prevalence of HTPR in patients with recently symptomatic carotid stenosis over time. Preliminary subgroup analysis suggests that successful intervention may reduce the prevalence of aspirin-HTPR in symptomatic patients to lower levels than asymptomatic medically-treated patients on aspirin monotherapy. Larger, longitudinal studies are warranted to reassess the impact of more intensive secondary preventive treatment on ex vivo platelet function at different levels of shear stress in carotid stenosis patients
