    Hybrid Fly Ash-Based Geopolymeric Foams: Microstructural, Thermal and Mechanical Properties

    This research investigates the preparation and characterization of new organic–inorganic geopolymeric foams obtained by simultaneously reacting coal fly ash and an alkali silicate solution with polysiloxane oligomers. Foaming was realized in situ using Si0 as a blowing agent. Samples with density ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 g/cm3 that show good mechanical properties (with compressive strength up to ≈5 MPa for a density of 0.7 g/cm3 ) along with thermal performances (λ = 0.145 ± 0.001 W/m·K for the foamed sample with density 0.330 g/cm3 ) comparable to commercial lightweight materials used in the field of thermal insulation were prepared. Since these foams were obtained by valorizing waste byproducts, they could be considered as low environmental impact materials and, hence, with promising perspectives towards the circular economy

    Intestinimonas-like bacteria are important butyrate producers that utilize Nε-fructosyllysine and lysine in formula-fed infants and adults

    Our study aim is to investigate the role of Intestinimonas, Nε-fructosyllysine (FL)-degrading bacterium, in infants and adults. We used lysine and subsequently FL in anaerobic serial dilutions of stools of infants and adults to enrich lysine and FL-degrading species. The fecal microbiota of adults were able to ferment lysine and FL to butyrate. Different groups of Intestinimonas spp. were detected from all lysine enrichments whereas the FL enrichments consisted of broader taxonomic groups with a reduced abundance of Intestinimonas-related species. Remarkably, the capability to degrade FL was only observed in formula-fed but not in breast-fed infants, which may relate to high contents of FL in formulas after thermal treatment. This possibility was supported by analyzing metagenomic datasets of 3-month and 4-month infants. Our data indicate the key role of Intestinimonas-like bacteria in FL degradation in formula-fed infants and adults as a profound example of adaptation of intestinal bacteria to dietary components.Peer reviewe

    Preparation and characterization of bioplastics from grass pea flour cast in the presence of microbial transglutaminase

    The aim of this work was to prepare bioplastics, from renewable and biodegradable molecules, to be used as edible films. In particular, grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) flour was used as biopolymer source, the proteins of which were structurally modified by means of microbial transglutaminase, an enzyme able to catalyze isopeptide bonds between glutamines and lysines. We analyzed, by means of Zeta-potential, the flour suspension with the aim to determine which pH is more stable for the production of film-forming solutions. The bioplastics were produced by casting and they were characterized according to several technological properties. Optical analysis demonstrated that films cast in the presence of the microbial enzyme are more transparent compared to the untreated ones. Moreover, the visualization by scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the enzyme-modified films possessed a more compact and homogeneous structure. Furthermore, the presence of microbial transglutaminase allowed to obtain film more mechanically resistant. Finally, digestion experiments under physiological conditions performed in order to obtain information useful for applying these novel biomaterials as carriers in the industrial field, indicated that the enzyme-treated coatings might allow the delivery of bioactive molecules in the gastro-intestinal tract

    hERG1 Channels Regulate VEGF-A Secretion in Human Gastric Cancer: Clinicopathological Correlations and Therapeutical Implications

    Purpose: hERG1 channels are aberrantly expressed in several types of human cancers, where they affect different aspects of cancer cell behavior. A thorough analysis of the functional role and clinical significance of hERG1 channels in gastric cancer is still lacking. Experimental Design: hERG1 expression was tested in a wide (508 samples) Italian cohort of surgically resected patients with gastric cancer, by immunohistochemistry and real-time quantitative PCR. The functional link between hERG1 and the VEGF-A was studied in different gastric cancer cell lines. The effects of hERG1 and VEGF-A inhibition were evaluated in vivo in xenograft mouse models. Results: hERG1 was positive in69% of the patients and positivity correlated with Lauren's intestinal type, fundus localization of the tumor, G1-G2 grading, I and II tumor-node-metastasis stage, and VEGF-A expression. hERG1 activity modulated VEGF-A secretion, through an AKT-dependent regulation of the transcriptional activity of the hypoxia inducible factor. Treatment of immunodeficient mice xenografted with human gastric cancer cells, with a combination of hERG1 blockers and anti-VEGF-A antibodies, impaired tumor growth more than single-drug treatments. Conclusion: Our results show that hERG1 (i) is aberrantly expressed in human gastric cancer since its early stages; (ii) drives an intracellular pathway leading to VEGF-A secretion; (iii) can be exploited to identify a gastric cancer patients' group where a combined treatment with antiangiogenic drugs and noncardiotoxic hERG1 inhibitors could be proposed. © 2014 American Association for Cancer Research

    Structured and shared CT radiological report of gastric cancer: a consensus proposal by the Italian Research Group for Gastric Cancer (GIRCG) and the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM)

    Objectives Written radiological report remains the most important means of communication between radiologist and referring medical/surgical doctor, even though CT reports are frequently just descriptive, unclear, and unstructured. The Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) and the Italian Research Group for Gastric Cancer (GIRCG) promoted a critical shared discussion between 10 skilled radiologists and 10 surgical oncologists, by means of multi-round consensus-building Delphi survey, to develop a structured reporting template for CT of GC patients. Methods Twenty-four items were organized according to the broad categories of a structured report as suggested by the European Society of Radiology (clinical referral, technique, findings, conclusion, and advice) and grouped into three "CT report sections" depending on the diagnostic phase of the radiological assessment for the oncologic patient (staging, restaging, and follow-up). Results In the final round, 23 out of 24 items obtained agreement ( >= 8) and consensus ( 0.05). Conclusions The structured report obtained, shared by surgical and medical oncologists and radiologists, allows an appropriate, clearer, and focused CT report essential to high-quality patient care in GC, avoiding the exclusion of key radiological information useful for multidisciplinary decision-making
