Search for exotic baryons in double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen
We report a search for low-lying exotic baryons via double radiative capture
on pionic hydrogen. The data were collected at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the
RMC spectrometer by detecting gamma-ray pairs from pion stops in liquid
hydrogen. No evidence was found to support an earlier claim for exotic baryons
of masses 1004 and 1044 MeV/. We obtain upper limits on the branching
ratios for double radiative capture via these exotic states of and respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

The transport of live fish is a routine practice in aquaculture and constitutes a considerable source of stress to the animals. The addition of anesthetic to the water used for fish transport can prevent or mitigate the deleterious effects of transport stress. This study investigated the effects of the addition of eugenol (EUG) (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and essential oil of Lippia alba (EOL) (10 or 20 mu L L-1) on metabolic parameters (glycogen, lactate and total protein levels) in liver and muscle, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in muscle and brain, and the levels of protein carbonyl (PC), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nonprotein thiol groups (NPSH) and activity of glutathione-S-transferase in the liver of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen; Quoy and Gaimard, 1824) transported for four hours in plastic bags (loading density of 169.2 g L-1). The addition of various concentrations of EUG (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and EOL (10 or 20 mu L L-1) to the transport water is advisable for the transportation of silver catfish, since both concentrations of these substances increased the levels of NPSH antioxidant and decreased the TBARS levels in the liver. Neutrino Masses, Mixing and New Physics Effects
We introduce a parametrization of the effects of radiative corrections from
new physics on the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, studying how
several relevant quantities describing the pattern of neutrino masses and
mixing are affected by these corrections. We find that the ratio omega = sin
theta / tan theta_atm is remarkably stable, even when relatively large
corrections are added to the original mass matrices. It is also found that if
the lightest neutrino has a mass around 0.3 eV, the pattern of masses and
mixings is considerably more stable under perturbations than for a lighter or
heavier spectrum. We explore the consequences of perturbations on some flavor
relations given in the literature. In addition, for a quasi-degenerate neutrino
spectrum it is shown that: (i) starting from a bi-maximal mixing scenario, the
corrections to the mass matrices keep tan theta_atm very close to unity while
they can lower tan theta_sol to its measured value; (ii) beginning from a
scenario with a vanishing Dirac phase, corrections can induce a Dirac phase
large enough to yield CP violation observable in neutrino oscillations.Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures. Uses RevTeX4. Added several comments and

Lepton Flavour Violating Leptonic/Semileptonic Decays of Charged Leptons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model
We consider the leptonic and semileptonic (SL) lepton flavour violating (LFV)
decays of the charged leptons in the minimal supersymmetric standard model
(MSSM). The formalism for evaluation of branching fractions for the SL LFV
charged-lepton decays with one or two pseudoscalar mesons, or one vector meson
in the final state, is given. Previous amplitudes for the SL LFV charged-lepton
decays in MSSM are improved, for instance the -penguin amplitude is
corrected to assure the gauge invariance. The decays are studied not only in
the model-independent formulation of the theory in the frame of MSSM, but also
within the frame of the minimal supersymmetric SO(10) model within which the
parameters of the MSSM are determined. The latter model gives predictions for
the neutrino-Dirac Yukawa coupling matrix, once free parameters in the model
are appropriately fixed to accommodate the recent neutrino oscillation data.
Using this unambiguous neutrino-Dirac Yukawa couplings, we calculate the LFV
leptonic and SL decay processes assuming the minimal supergravity scenario. A
very detailed numerical analysis is done to constrain the MSSM parameters.
Numerical results for SL LFV processes are given, for instance for tau -> e
(mu) pi0, tau -> e (mu) eta, tau -> e (mu) eta', tau -> e (mu) rho0, tau -> e

BCR-ABL1 genomic DNA PCR response kinetics during first-line imatinib treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia
Accurate quantification of minimal residual disease during treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia guides clinical decisions. The conventional minimal residual disease method, RQ-PCR for BCR-ABL1 mRNA, reflects a composite of the number of circulating leukemic cells and the BCR-ABL1 transcripts per cell. BCR-ABL1 genomic DNA only reflects leukemic cell number. We used both methods in parallel to determine the relative contribution of the leukemic cell number to molecular response. BCR-ABL1 DNA PCR and RQ-PCR were monitored up to 24 months in 516 paired samples from 59 newly-diagnosed patients treated with first-line imatinib in the TIDEL-II study. In the first 3 months of treatment BCR-ABL1 mRNA values declined more rapidly than DNA. By 6 months the two measures aligned closely. The expression of BCR-ABL1 mRNA was normalized to cell number to generate an expression ratio. The expression of e13a2 BCR-ABL1 was lower than that of e14a2 transcripts at multiple time points during treatment. BCR-ABL1 DNA was quantifiable in 48% of samples with undetectable BCR-ABL1 mRNA, resulting in minimal residual disease being quantifiable for an additional 5-18 months (median 12 months). These parallel studies show for the first time that the rapid decline in BCR-ABL1 mRNA over the first 3 months of treatment is due to a reduction in both cell number and transcript level per cell, whereas beyond 3 months falling levels of BCR-ABL1 mRNA are predominantly due to depletion of leukaemic cells.Ilaria S. QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model
Within the framework of modified teleparallel gravity, we reconstruct a f(T)
model corresponding to the QCD ghost dark energy scenario. For a spatially flat
FRW universe containing only the pressureless matter, we obtain the time
evolution of the torsion scalar T (or the Hubble parameter). Then, we calculate
the effective torsion equation of state parameter of the QCD ghost f(T)-gravity
model as well as the deceleration parameter of the universe. Furthermore, we
fit the model parameters by using the latest observational data including
SNeIa, CMB and BAO data. We also check the viability of our model using a
cosmographic analysis approach. Moreover, we investigate the validity of the
generalized second law (GSL) of gravitational thermodynamics for our model.
Finally, we point out the growth rate of matter density perturbation. We
conclude that in QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model, the universe begins a matter
dominated phase and approaches a de Sitter regime at late times, as expected.
Also this model is consistent with current data, passes the cosmographic test,
satisfies the GSL and fits the data of the growth factor well as the LCDM

Single Spin Asymmetry in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at GeV
We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin
asymmetry at the center of mass energy GeV in elastic
proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The was measured
in the four-momentum transfer squared range \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the
electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of
and its -dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip
amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single
spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated
by the Pomeron amplitude at this , we conclude that this measurement
addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the
Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
Serious (violent or chronic) juvenile offenders: A systematic review of treatment effectiveness in secure corrections
Positive results in reducing future offender were found for some of the programs examined that
serve serious (violent or chronic) juvenile offenders in secure corrections. Considering this
general outcome, it is justifiable to continue treating this population. We found that programs
were more effective at reducing serious recidivism than in reducing general recidivism. This
finding shows the importance of including serious recidivism as an outcome measure of efficacy
in all the programmes oriented to reduce the delinquent behaviour of serious offenders. Chronic
and violent offenders are a small part of the offender population yet they are responsible for a
substantive portion of all offenses. Reducing the delinquent behaviour of this group through
secure correctional programming is clearly important that this review suggests that such
programs can be effective
