Micro-abrasion resistance of thermochemically treated steels in aqueous solutions: Mechanisms, maps, materials selection
The area of micro-abrasion is an interesting and relatively recent area in tribo-testing methodologies, where small particles of less than 10 μm are employed between interacting surfaces. It is topical for a number of reasons; its direct relation to the mechanisms of the wear process in bio-tribological applications, ease in conducting tests and the good repeatability of the test results. It has widespread applications in conditions used in the space and offshore industries to bio-engineering for artificial joints and implants. There have been many recent studies on the micro-abrasion performance of materials, ranging from work basic metals to nano-structured coatings. However, no significant work is reported on the micro-abrasion resistance of thermochemically treated steels. Hence, this paper looks at the performance of two thermochemically treated steels, Tenifer bath nitride stainless steel (T-SS) and vanadized carbon steel (V-CS) in such conditions with reference to the stainless steel (SS) by varying the applied load and sliding distance. The results indicated that T-SS demonstrates exceptionally poor resistance to micro-abrasion. It was observed that the heat treatment process and properties of the hardened layer (hardness and thickness) are extremely important in determining the micro-abrasion resistance of such steels. Finally, the results were used to develop micro-abrasion mechanism and wastage maps, which can be used to optimize the surface treated materials for micro-abrasion resistance
Some thoughts on neural network modelling of micro-abrasion-corrosion processes
There is increasing interest in the interactions of microabrasion, involving small particles of less than 10 μm in size, with corrosion. This is because such interactions occur in many environments ranging from the offshore to health care sectors. In particular, micro-abrasion-corrosion can occur in oral processing, where the abrasive components of food interacting with the acidic environment, can lead to degradation of the surface dentine of teeth. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are computing mechanisms based on the biological brain. They are very effective in various areas such as modelling, classification and pattern recognition. They have been successfully applied in almost all areas of engineering and many practical industrial applications. Hence, in this paper an attempt has been made to model the data obtained in microabrasion-corrosion experiments on polymer/steel couple and a ceramic/lasercarb coating couple using ANN. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is applied and the results obtained from modelling the tribocorrosion processes will be compared with those obtained from a relatively new class of neural networks namely resource allocation network
Influence of different methods of treating natural açai fibre for mortar in rural construction

foods, whose consumption has been growing year after year. One of the major environmental
impacts related to Açai is the generation of agro-industrial wastes, which are disposed of in
landfills. One of the major problems related to the reuse of natural fibres in cementitious materials
is related to their durability due to the alkalinity of the matrix. Thus, the objective of this work
was to evaluate three different methodologies for surface treatment of Açai fibre, by immersion
in NaOH, KOH and Ca(OH)2 solution to mortar application in rural construction. After the
treatments, the fibres were added in a proportion of 2.5 and 5.0% in relation to the cement mass,
in addition to the reference mortar (without fibre) in the making of the prismatic specimens
(40×40×160 mm) and cured for 28 days in room temperature. Right after the curing period, the
specimens were evaluated according to the mechanical strength of flexion and compression,
workability, water absorption by capillarity and mass density in the hardened state of each
methodology. The results showed that the best treatment methodology is with NaOH solution,
with the addition of 5% Açai fibre in relation to the cement mass, producing a suitable mortar for
use in rural buildings
Some aspects of the venom proteome of the Colubridae snake Philodryas olfersii revealed from a Duvernoy’s (venom) gland transcriptome
AbstractWe investigated the putative toxins of Philodryas olfersii (Colubridae), a representative of a family of snakes neglected in venom studies despite their growing medical importance. Transcriptomic data of the venom gland complemented by proteomic analysis of the gland secretion revealed the presence of major toxin classes from the Viperidae family, including serine proteases, metalloproteases, C-type lectins, Crisps, and a C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP). Interestingly, the phylogenetic analysis of the CNP precursor showed it as a linker between two related precursors found in Viperidae and Elapidae snakes. We suggest that these precursors constitute a monophyletic group derived from the vertebrate CNPs
Measuring in the Early Universe: CMB Temperature, Large-Scale Structure and Fisher Matrix Analysis
We extend our recent work on the effects of a time-varying fine-structure
constant in the cosmic microwave background, by providing a thorough
analysis of the degeneracies between and the other cosmological
parameters, and discussing ways to break these with both existing and/or
forthcoming data. In particular, we present the state-of-the-art CMB
constraints on , through a combined analysis of the BOOMERanG, MAXIMA
and DASI datasets. We also present a novel discussion of the constraints on
coming from large-scale structure observations, focusing in particular
on the power spectrum from the 2dF survey. Our results are consistent with no
variation in from the epoch of recombination to the present day, and
restrict any such (relative) variation to be less than about 4%. We show that
the forthcoming MAP and (particularly) Planck experiments will be able to break
most of the currently existing degeneracies between and other

Application of pineapple fiber in the development of sustainable mortars

India have problems regarding the correct disposal of residues from the production of this fruit.
One of the possibilities is the reuse of these residues in the form of fibers in cementitious
materials, as is the case with mortars. As a result, the objective of this work is to evaluate the
application of pineapple fibers in mortars in the proportion of 1: 4 (cement: sand) with addition
of fiber treated in NaOH in the proportion of 3 and 6%. The properties of mechanical resistance,
water absorption, mass density and adhesion were evaluated, aiming to apply the mortar in
coatings of rural environments. The results indicate that the fibers reduced the mortar density and
increased the mechanical strength. However, there was a reduction in adherence, especially with
the use of 6% fiber, in addition to an increase in water absorption. Based on the results, it is
concluded that it is feasible to use 3% of pineapple fiber for the production of coating mortars in
rural environments because the results obtained in the investigation are compatible with this
application and with the established normative limits

We develop a toy model of pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions that
reproduces some of the features of the chiral Lagrangian calculations. We

Purification and characterization of a variant of human prothrombin: prothrombin Segovia
A dysprothrombin designated prothrombin Segovia was isolated from the plasma of an individual with normal prothrombin antigen and prothrombin activity lesser than 25% of the control prothrombin activity. Activation by prothrombinase complex showed a lower amidolytic than clotting activity, which suggests a lesser generation of active intermediates than normal prothrombin. When prothrombin Segovia was activated by prothrombinase complex in the absence of factor Va, no thrombin formation was found by functional activities. SDS-PAGE analysis of the molecules derived by activation with prothrombinase complex, Taipan snake venom and Echis carinatus venom showed an accumulation of molecules not cleaved at bond Arg320-Ile321. This was more evident with Echis carinatus venom, which only acts on this bond. Our data suggest that the alteration of prothrombin Segovia impairs the scission of bond Arg320-Ile321
Field tests for control of the mound-building termite Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar, 1832) (Isoptera, Termitidae)
Com a finalidade de combater o cupim de monte Cornitermes cumulans, importante espécie invasora, foram instalados dois campos experimentais. Experimento I: 60 ninhos foram escolhidos e medidos externamente. O ensaio constou de 6 tratamentos com 10 repetições: A) abamectina (50 cm³ CE 1,8%); B) silafluofem (200 cm³ CE 80%); C) silafluofem (400 cm³ CE 80%); D) fipronil (15g G 2%); E) fipronil (20g G 2%); F) clorpirifós (30g G 0,125%). Nos tratamentos A, B, C, as quantidades entre parênteses são da formulação comercial em 100 litros de água. Em D, E, F, são do granulado para cada ninho. Dos líquidos, usou-se um litro de calda por monte. A demolição dos montes deu-se após 103 dias da aplicação. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a abamectina e fipronil. Experimento II: Também neste ensaio os cupinzeiros foram 60, abrangendo 6 tratamentos com 10 repetições: A) fipronil (l0g G 2%); B) fipronil (15g G 2%); C) bendiocarbe (20g G 0,1%); D) bendiocarbe (20g G 0,5%); E) imidaclopride (0,15g G 70%); F) imidaclopride (0,30g G 70%). Em A, B, C, D, as quantidades de granulados são por ninho. Em E, F são de granulado dispersível em um litro de água, por ninho. A destruição dos cupinzeiros foi feita 148 e 149 dias após a aplicação. Os melhores resultados foram o fipronil e imidaclopride.Two field tests were carried out to evaluate the performance of several pesticides for the control of the mound termite pest in pastures. In A,B,C, the quantities between parenthesis are of the commercial formulation in 100 liters of water. In D,E,F, are of granular insecticides per mound. One liter of the liquids was used per nest. Demolition of the mounds were made 103 days after the application. The most efficient were abamectin and fipronil. Experiment II: Also 60 nests, with 6 treatments and 10 replicátions: A) fipronil (lOg 2% G); B) fipronil (15g 2% G); C) bendiocarb (20g 0.1% G); D) bendiocarh (20g 0.5% G); E) imidacloprid (0.15g 70% G); F) imidacloprid (0.30g 70% G). In A,B,C,D, the quantities of granular insecticides are by nest. In E,F, of dispersible granule in 1 liter of water, by nest.
