    Sensitivity and resolution in 19F and 15N solid-state NMR: applications to pharmaceutical systems

    This thesis describes a study into the improvement of solid-state NMR methods for the detection and characterisation of pharmaceutical compound. Chapter 1 reviews the literature that are relevant to the techniques discussed within this thesis Chapter 2 outlines the key experimental techniques employed within this work. Chapter 3 investigates the usefulness of indirect detection as a method to detect and possibly quantify the ratio of 15N present for multiple 15N containing systems. The work highlights how for CP performed at fast MAS, there is a much greater sensitivity to the RF inhomogeneity of the probe, and how this be reduced by using ramped CP. The results showed that for routine detection of 15N it is advised to detect via routine CP, due to the more complex setup of indirect detection. Chapter 4 discusses the potential of combining REDOR data and that of powder X-ray diffraction as a method to improve the efficiency of structural determination of powders. The investigation was performed on two pseudo-polymorphs with the aim of measuring differences in the 13C-19F couplings. The aim was that many ‘loose constraints’ could be used to improve efficiency when working with natural abundance 13C. Chapter 5 for 19F, a large number of model compounds were selected to reflect the broad range of possible fluorine environments, ranging from per-fluorinated systems where the line-width is dominated by homonuclear coupling to systems dilute in 19F when the total line-width is found to be determined by the hetero-nuclear decoupling as well as in-homogenous contribution. Combining the data from the model compounds it has led to a better understanding the factors that determine 19F resolution. As such a suitable work scheme in order to achieve the best resolution for 19F containing compounds is presented. Chapter 6 investigates the combination of NMR and calculated data in order to assign chemical shifts to specific crystal sites1.     Psychological type profile of Roman Catholic priests : an empirical enquiry in the United States

    This study explores the psychological type profile of Roman Catholic priests serving in the United States, drawing on data provided by 55 priests who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales. The data demonstrated clear preferences for introversion (67 %), sensing (64 %), and judging (91 %), and for a balance between thinking (49 %) and feeling (51 %). A very high proportion of priests reported preferences for ISTJ (27 %), compared with 16 % of men in the U.S. population. Implications of these findings are discussed for ministry in the Roman Catholic Church

    A study of electron-multiplying CCDs for use on the International X-ray Observatory off-plane x-ray grating spectrometer

    CCDs are regularly used as imaging and spectroscopic devices on space telescopes at X-ray energies due to their high quantum efficiency and linearity across the energy range. The International X-ray Observatory's X-ray Grating Spectrometer will also look to make use of these devices across the energy band of 0.3 keV to 1 keV. At these energies, when photon counting, the charge generated in the silicon is close to the noise of the system. In order to be able to detect these low energy X-ray events, the system noise of the detector has to be minimised to have a sufficient signal-to-noise-ratio. By using an EM-CCD instead of a conventional CCD, any charge that is collected in the device can be multiplied before it is read out and as long as the EM-CCD is cool enough to adequately suppress the dark current, the signal-to-noise ratio of the device can be significantly increased, allowing soft X-ray events to be more easily detected. This paper will look into the use of EM-CCDs for the detection of low energy X-rays, in particular the effect that using these devices will have on the signal to noise ratio as well as any degradation in resolution and FWHM that may occur due to the additional shot noise on the signal caused by the charge packet amplification process

    The influence of barefoot and barefoot inspired footwear on the kinetics and kinematics of running in comparison to conventional running shoes.

    Barefoot running has experienced a resurgence in footwear biomechanics literature, based on the supposition that it serves to reduce the occurrence of overuse injuries in comparison to conventional shoe models. This consensus has lead footwear manufacturers to develop shoes which aim to mimic the mechanics of barefoot locomotion. This study compared the impact kinetics and 3-D joint angular kinematics observed whilst running: barefoot, in conventional cushioned running shoes and in shoes designed to integrate the perceived benefits of barefoot locomotion. The aim of the current investigation was therefore to determine whether differences in impact kinetics exist between the footwear conditions and whether shoes which aim to simulate barefoot movement patterns can closely mimic the 3-D kinematics of barefoot running. Twelve participants ran at 4.0 m.s-1±5% in each footwear condition. Angular joint kinematics from the hip, knee and ankle in the sagittal, coronal and transverse planes were measured using an eight camera motion analysis system. In addition simultaneous tibial acceleration and ground reaction forces were obtained. Impact parameters and joint kinematics were subsequently compared using repeated measures ANOVAs. The kinematic analysis indicates that in comparison to the conventional and barefoot inspired shoes that running barefoot was associated significantly greater plantar-flexion at footstrike and range of motion to peak dorsiflexion. Furthermore, the kinetic analysis revealed that compared to the conventional footwear impact parameters were significantly greater in the barefoot condition. Therefore this study suggests that barefoot running is associated with impact kinetics linked to an increased risk of overuse injury, when compared to conventional shod running. Furthermore, the mechanics of the shoes which aim to simulate barefoot movement patterns do not appear to closely mimic the kinematics of barefoot locomotion

    Contemporary Africa through the theory of Louis Dumont

    Abstract This article responds to a trend in recent anthropological scholarship in Africa that has overemphasized a lack of social organization following the advancement of neoliberal reforms across the continent. Using a theoretical framework informed by the theory of Louis Dumont, I show that social organization remains an important analytical topic in times of crisis, and that this is best apprehended through an analysis of values. The ethnographic focus of this article is Pentecostal Christianity as it is practiced on the Zambian Copperbelt. In this particular African context, Pentecostalism is animated by an overarching value that I call "moving," which is in turn made up to two sub-values: charisma and prosperity. By exploring how Pentecostal believers navigate the hierarchical relationship between these two sub-values, we are given a clear picture of the social world that Pentecostal adherence makes possible
