    Diffusion quantum Monte Carlo and GW study of the electronic properties of monolayer and bulk hexagonal boron nitride

    © 2020 American Physical Society. We report diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) and many-body GW calculations of the electronic band gaps of monolayer and bulk hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We find the monolayer band gap to be indirect. GW predicts much smaller quasiparticle gaps at both the single-shot G0W0 and the partially self-consistent GW0 levels. In contrast, solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of the GW0 calculation yields an exciton binding energy for the direct exciton at the K point in close agreement with the DMC value. Vibrational renormalization of the electronic band gap is found to be significant in both the monolayer and the bulk. Taking vibrational effects into account, DMC overestimates the band gap of bulk hBN, while GW theory underestimates it

    Approach-induced biases in human information sampling

    Information sampling is often biased towards seeking evidence that confirms one’s prior beliefs. Despite such biases being a pervasive feature of human behavior, their underlying causes remain unclear. Many accounts of these biases appeal to limitations of human hypothesis testing and cognition, de facto evoking notions of bounded rationality, but neglect more basic aspects of behavioral control. Here we demonstrate involvement of Pavlovian approach biases in determining which information humans will choose to sample. We collected a large novel dataset from 32,445 human subjects, making over 3 million decisions, who played a gambling task designed to measure the latent causes and extent of information-sampling biases. We identified three novel approach-related biases, formalized by comparing subject behavior to a dynamic programming model of optimal information gathering. These biases reflected the amount of information sampled (‘positive evidence approach’), the selection of which information to sample (‘sampling the favorite’), and the interaction between information sampling and subsequent choices (‘rejecting unsampled options’). The prevalence of all three biases was related to a Pavlovian approach-avoid parameter quantified within an entirely independent economic decision task. Our large dataset also revealed that individual differences in information seeking are a stable trait across multiple gameplays, and can be related to demographic measures including age and educational attainment. As well as revealing limitations in cognitive processing, our findings suggest information sampling biases reflect the expression of primitive, yet potentially ecologically adaptive, behavioral repertoires. One such behavior is sampling from options that will eventually be chosen, even when other sources of information are more pertinent for guiding future action

    Temporally Dissociable Contributions of Human Medial Prefrontal Subregions to Reward-Guided Learning

    In decision making, dorsal and ventral medial prefrontal cortex show a sensitivity to key decision variables, such as reward prediction errors. It is unclear whether these signals reflect parallel processing of a common synchronous input to both regions, for example from mesocortical dopamine, or separate and consecutive stages in reward processing. These two perspectives make distinct predictions about the relative timing of feedback-related activity in each of these regions, a question we address here. To reconstruct the unique temporal contribution of dorsomedial (dmPFC) and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) to simultaneously measured EEG activity in human subjects, we developed a novel trialwise fMRI-informed EEG analysis that allows dissociating correlated and overlapping sources. We show that vmPFC uniquely contributes a sustained activation profile shortly after outcome presentation, whereas dmPFC contributes a later and more peaked activation pattern. This temporal dissociation is expressed mainly in the alpha band for a vmPFC signal, which contrasts with a theta based dmPFC signal. Thus, our data show reward-related vmPFC and dmPFC responses have distinct time courses and unique spectral profiles, findings that support distinct functional roles in a reward-processing network

    Diffusion quantum Monte Carlo study of excitonic complexes in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides

    Excitonic effects play a particularly important role in the optoelectronic behavior of two-dimensional semiconductors. To facilitate the interpretation of experimental photoabsorption and photoluminescence spectra we provide (i) statistically exact diffusion quantum Monte Carlo binding-energy data for a Mott-Wannier model of (donor/acceptor-bound) excitons, trions, and biexcitons in two-dimensional semiconductors in which charges interact via the Keldysh potential, (ii) contact pair-distribution functions to allow a perturbative description of contact interactions between charge carriers, and (iii) an analysis and classification of the different types of bright trions and biexcitons that can be seen in single-layer molybdenum and tungsten dichalcogenides. We investigate the stability of biexcitons in which two charge carriers are indistinguishable, finding that they are only bound when the indistinguishable particles are several times heavier than the distinguishable ones. Donor/acceptor-bound biexcitons have similar binding energies to the experimentally measured biexciton binding energies. We predict the relative positions of all stable free and bound excitonic complexes of distinguishable charge carriers in the photoluminescence spectra of WSe2 and MoSe2

    Hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection

    Coherent large-scale circulations of turbulent thermal convection in air have been studied experimentally in a rectangular box heated from below and cooled from above using Particle Image Velocimetry. The hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection was found by varying the temperature difference between the bottom and the top walls of the chamber (the Rayleigh number was changed within the range of 107−10810^7 - 10^8). The hysteresis loop comprises the one-cell and two-cells flow patterns while the aspect ratio is kept constant (A=2−2.23A=2 - 2.23). We found that the change of the sign of the degree of the anisotropy of turbulence was accompanied by the change of the flow pattern. The developed theory of coherent structures in turbulent convection (Elperin et al. 2002; 2005) is in agreement with the experimental observations. The observed coherent structures are superimposed on a small-scale turbulent convection. The redistribution of the turbulent heat flux plays a crucial role in the formation of coherent large-scale circulations in turbulent convection.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, REVTEX4, Experiments in Fluids, 2006, in pres

    Ownership-dependent mating tactics of minor males of the beetle Librodor japonicus (Nitidulidae) with intra-sexual dimorphism of mandibles

    Intra-sexual dimorphism is found in the weapons of many male beetles. Different behavioral tactics to access females between major and minor males, which adopt fighting and alternative tactics, respectively, are thought to maintain the male dimorphism. In these species major males have enlarged weapons that they use in fights with rival males. Minor males also have small weapons in some of these species, and it is unclear why these males possess weapons. We examined the hypothesis that minor males might adopt a fighting tactic when their status was relatively high in comparison with that of other males (e.g., ownership of a territory). We observed the behavioral tactics of major and minor males of the beetle Librodor japonicus, whose males have a dimorphism of their mandibles. Major males fought for resources, whereas minor males adopted two status-dependent tactics, fighting and sneaking, to access females, depending on their ownership of a sap site. We suggest that ownership status-dependent mating tactics in minor males may maintain the intra-sexual dimorphism in this beetle.</p
