    SPS structures and control: A perspective

    The characteristics and design requirements for the structure and control systems for a solar power satellite were evaluated. A simplistic, indicative analysis on a representative configuration was developed. Representative configuration masses and dimensions are given in convenient approximate magnitudes. The significance of structure control interaction and the significance of stiffness to the minimization of dynamic energy was demonstrated. It was found that the thermal environment for the SPS was dominated by solar radiation and waste heat rejection by the antenna. A more in-depth assessment of the control system design and associated system performance is still needed, specifically the inter-relatonships between control sensors, actuators, and structural response

    Orbiter entry aerothermodynamics

    The challenge in the definition of the entry aerothermodynamic environment arising from the challenge of a reliable and reusable Orbiter is reviewed in light of the existing technology. Select problems pertinent to the orbiter development are discussed with reference to comprehensive treatments. These problems include boundary layer transition, leeward-side heating, shock/shock interaction scaling, tile gap heating, and nonequilibrium effects such as surface catalysis. Sample measurements obtained from test flights of the Orbiter are presented with comparison to preflight expectations. Numerical and wind tunnel simulations gave efficient information for defining the entry environment and an adequate level of preflight confidence. The high quality flight data provide an opportunity to refine the operational capability of the orbiter and serve as a benchmark both for the development of aerothermodynamic technology and for use in meeting future entry heating challenges

    A dual reference SPS system with pseudoisotropic graphite composite as a representative dimensionally stable composite was studied. The loads, accelerations, thermal environments, temperatures and distortions were calculated for a variety of operational SPS conditions along with statistical considerations of material properties, manufacturing tolerances, measurement accuracy and the resulting loss of sight (LOS) and local slope distributions. A LOS error and a subarray rms slope error of two arc minutes can be achieved with a passive system. Results show that existing materials measurement, manufacturing, assembly and alignment techniques can be used to build the microwave power transmission system antenna structure. Manufacturing tolerance can be critical to rms slope error. The slope error budget can be met with a passive system. Structural joints without free play are essential in the assembly of the large truss structure. Variations in material properties, particularly for coefficient of thermal expansion from part to part, is more significant than actual value

    Control-structure interaction in a free beam

    A simple energy approach to study the problem of control structure interactions in large space structures is presented. For the illustrative case of a free-free beam, the vibrational energy imparted during operation of constant, step, and pulsed thrusters is found in a nondimensional closed form. Then based on a parametric study, suggestions are made on the choice of parameters to minimize the control structure interactions. The study of this simple system provides physical insight and understanding for more complex systems

    A statistical consideration of the energy, the linear momentum, and the angular momentum of the photons that make up a thermal radiation field was presented. A general nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics approach toward a macroscopic description of thermal radiation transport was developed and then applied to the restricted equilibrium statistical thermostatics derivation of the energy, linear momentum, and intrinsic angular momentum equations for an isotropic photon gas. A brief treatment of a nonisotropic photon gas, as an example of the results produced by the nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics approach, was given. The relativistic variation of temperature and the invariance of entropy were illustrated

    Mapping of Multiple DNA Gains and Losses in Primary Small Cell Lung Carcinomas by Comparative Genomic Hybridization

    Comparative genomic hybridization was applied for a comprehensive screening of under- and overrepresentation of genetic material in 13 autoptic small cell lung cancer specimens. The most abundant genetic changes include DNA losses of chromosome arms 3p, 5q, 10q, 13q, and 17p and DNA gains of 3q, 5p, 8q, and 17q. Amplification sites in these tumors were mapped to 22 chromosome bands. The most frequently involved band was 19q13.1 (4 cases). Bands 1p32, 2p23, 7q11.2, 8q24, and 13q33–34 were involved in two cases each

    Space Shuttle orbiter entry heating and TPS response: STS-1 predictions and flight data

    Aerothermodynamic development flight test data from the first orbital flight test of the Space Transportation System (STS) transmitted after entry blackout is given. Engineering predictions of boundary layer transition and numerical simulations of the orbiter flow field were confirmed. The data tended to substantiate preflight predictions of surface catalysis phenomena. The thermal response of the thermal protection system was as expected. The only exception is that internal free convection was found to be significant in limiting the peak temperature of the structure in areas which do not have internal insulation

    We present a technique which allows the detection and chromosomal localization of DNA sequence copy number changes in solid tumor genomes from frozen sections and paraffin embedded, formalin fixed specimens. Based on comparative genomic hybridization and on universal DNA amplification procedures this technique is possible even if only a few tumor cells are available. We demonstrate the feasibility of this method to visualize complete and partial chromosome gains and losses and gene amplifications In archived solid tumor samples
