    Mechanisms of salt stress tolerance in Casuarina: a review of recent research

    ReviewSalinization is a global concern whose extent is predicted to progressively increase over this century. In this context, biosaline agriculture has been included in the set of climate-smart solutions to support sustainable and resilient ecosystems. The Casuarinaceae family is widely known for its intrinsic ability to thrive under saline environments. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms underlying salt-tolerance in this family is of utmost importance for landscape integration and soil rehabilitation. In this mini-review, we present the state of the art of Casuarina research – from gene to ecosystem – in response to salinity, towards green growth and sustainable development.     A mandíbula humana é um dos elementos anatómicos de difícil análise biomecânica, pois combina, com uma elevada sofisticação, uma complexa geometria que inclui osso cortical e trabecular, tecido dentário, ligamentos, nervos e vasos sanguíneos. Neste artigo é efectuado um estudo numérico sobre um modelo de um desdentado com implantes, detenninado por tomografia computorizada. É efectuada uma análise paramétrica para verificar a influência das propriedades do osso trabecular no comportamento biomecânica da mandíbula durante actividade mastigatória. O resultado da deformação permite concluir que a actividade de ósseo integração é mais adequada para maiores valores de densidade do tecido ósseo. Os resultados demonstram ainda que para o mesmo valor de esforço de mordida, as tensões equivalentes crescem com a densidade do tecido

    Efficacy of free and nanoencapsulated Eucalyptus citriodora essential oils on sheep gastrointestinal nematodes and toxicity for mice

    AbstractHerbal medicines with anthelmintic effects are alternatives for the sustainable control and prevention of disease caused by gastrointestinal parasites. The nanoencapsulation of essential oils has been proposed to enhance the absorption of their constituents and improve their efficacy. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of free and nanoencapsulated Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil (EcEO) on the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants in vitro and in vivo. Chitosan was used as a matrix for the formulation of a nanoemulsion. Chromatographic and physico-chemical analyses of EcEO were performed. Egg hatch (EHT) and larval development (LDT) tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of nanoencapsulated and free EcEO on the eggs and larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Acute toxicity of free and nanoencapsulated EcEO was evaluated using mice. Finally, nanoencapsulated EcEO efficacy on the control of gastrointestinal nematodes was calculated by fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) treating 30 sheep naturally infected with 250mg/kg of free and nanoencapsulated EcEO. In vitro tests were analyzed by an analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by comparison with the Tukey test. The efficacy of FECRT was calculated by the BootStreet program through arithmetic average, using the formula 100 (1−XT/XC). To compare the differences between epg, the data were transformed to log(x+1) and subjected to an ANOVA to compare the significant differences between groups by Tukey's. The level of significance was P<0.05. The free (4mg/ml concentration) and nanoencapsulated (2mg/ml concentration) EcEO inhibited larvae hatching by 97.2% and 92.8%, respectively. Free and nanoencapsulated EcEO at 8mg/ml inhibited larval development by 99.8% and 98.1%, respectively. In the acute toxicity test, the LD10 and LD50 of free EcEO was 1999 and 2653mg/kg, respectively, while the LD10 and LD50 of nanoencapsulated EcEO was 1121 and 1681mg/kg, respectively. Nanoencapsulated and free EcEO reduced FEC similarly by 40.5% and 55.9%, respectively at 10 days post-treatment. Nanoencapsulated EcEO did not obtain the expected efficacy in vivo

    Stevia rebaudiana germplasm characterization using microsatellite markers and steviol glycosides quantification by HPLC

    Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni, Asteraceae, is an herbaceous perennial plant native to Paraguay. This species is considered since ancient times a medicinal plant with important bioactive compounds and pharmacologic and food properties, namely diterpenes glycosides. The high natural sweetener potential stevioside and rebaudioside A produced by S. rebaudiana plants are suitable sucrose substitutes, and their obtention is influenced by environmental, phytosociological, and genetic factors. The plants' genetic profile and sweet potential depiction are needed for suitable plant selection for improvement and deployment. Thirty-one S. rebaudiana accessions grown in the same plot where leaves samples were collected in early 2019, were genotyped using six microsatellite markers, including two steviol glycosides biosynthesis functionally involved markers. Additionally, an aqueous extract of each sample was obtained in a water bath and purified by SPE for stevioside and rebaudioside A quantification by normal phase HPLC. Stevioside and rebaudioside A contents varied between 0.53-7.36% (w w-1) and 0.37-3.60% (w w-1), respectively. Two genotypes displayed interesting ratios of rebaudioside A/stevioside (number 3 and 33). The level of genetic similarity between genotypes was tested through a pairwise similarity coefficient, and two groups of individuals had the same fingerprinting. Strong relatedness was found within genotypes, possibly due to cloning, thus, influx of new germplasm ought to be made to prevent mating between relatives, and for further selection and genetic improvement.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    An array of fabry-perot optical-channels for biological fluids analysis

    This paper describes a biosystem (biological system) used to measure the concentration of biochemical substances in urine, serum, plasma or cerebrospinal fluid. Rather than just one channel, it comprises 16 optical-channels that enable the measurement of the concentration of 16 different biochemical substances. An array of 16 optical filters based on Fabry-Perot thin-films optical resonators has been designed. Each optical-channel is sensitive in a single wavelength with a full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of 7 nm. The filter fabrication requires only four masks, used with different etch time. A commercially available band-pass optical filter with a band-pass wavelength in 450–650 nm is used.     Biological microsystem for measuring uric acid in biological fluids

    This paper describes a biological microsystem (bio-system) for measuring uric acid concentration in serum, plasma or urine. Its operation is based on optical absorption in a well-defined part of the visible spectrum. The bio-system is composed by two dies: one is fabricated in polystyrene and contains the microchannels and the other is fabricated in a CMOS standard process and contains the photodetector and readout electronics. The uric acid concentration is measured by using a mixture of 14µl of infinity™ uric acid reagent with 0.25µl of sample. The achieved sensitivity is 0.33 mg/dl (±0.6% of the value in urine of a healthy person), with a 1mm lightpath. Using an optical absorption method, a maximum peak at wavelength λ = 494 nm, is detected.     Spray-drying microencapsulation of synergistic antioxidant mushroom extracts and their use as functional food ingredients

    In this work, hydroalcoholic extracts of two mushrooms species, Suillus luteus (L.: Fries) (Sl) and Coprinopsis atramentaria (Bull.) (Ca), were studied for their synergistic antioxidant effect and their viability as functional food ingredients tested by incorporation into a food matrix (cottage cheese). In a first step, the individual extracts and a combination of both, showing synergistic effects (Sl:Ca, 1:1), were microencapsulated by spray-drying using maltodextrin as the encapsulating material. The incorporation of free extracts resulted in products with a higher initial antioxidant activity (t0) but declining after 7 days (t7), which was associated with their degradation. However, the cottage cheese enriched with the microencapsulated extracts, that have revealed a lower activity at the initial time, showed an increase at t7. This improvement can be explained by an effective protection provided by the microspheres together with a sustained release.
