A Nanostructured Piezoelectric Immunosensor for Detection of Human Cardiac Troponin T
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)A piezoelectric immunosensor based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) co-immobilized on a dithiol-modified surface is proposed for detection of human cardiac troponin T (TnT). Anti-human troponin T (anti-TnT) antibodies were covalently immobilized on the nanostructured electrode surface by thiol-aldehyde linkages. In a homogeneous bulk solution, TnT was captured by anti-TnT immobilized on the QCM electrode. Cyclic voltammetry studies were used to characterize the AuNPs layer on the electrode surface and the anti-TnT immobilization steps. The QCM-flow immunosensor exhibited good reliability, measuring concentrations of TnT from 0.003 to 0.5 ng mL(-1) in human serum with high linearity (r = 0.989; p < 0.01). The immunosensor exhibited a 7% coefficient of variation and 0.0015 ng mL(-1) limit of detection, indicating a high reproducibility and sensitivity. The proposed QCM nanostructured immunosensor is easy to use and has promising potential in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction due to its speed and high sensitivity.11111078510797Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)CNPq [483242/2010-1
History of adversity, health and psychopathology among prisoners: comparison between men and women
Adversity in childhood, risk behaviors
and psychopathology are highly prevalent phenomena
in inmate populations and have a strong
impact on health. Knowing the differences in these
variables between the sexes is most important in
order to develop appropriate intervention strategies
in a prison context. By administering the
Socio-demographic and Life History Questionnaire
and the Brief Symptoms Inventory, we
sought to characterize adverse childhood experiences
and relate them to risk behaviors and to
psychopathological symptoms, and study the differences
between the 65 male and 42 female detainees
in Portuguese prison establishments. Men
and women report a complex web of adversity in
childhood. In a range of ten possible categories, a
medium value of 5.05 (DP = 2.63) in total adversity
for women and 2.63 (DP = 2.18) for men was
encountered, with the prevalence being significantly
higher within the female population (Z =
-4.33; p = .000). A high prevalence of risk behaviors
and psychopathological symptoms was found
in both groups, the latter being higher among females.
We concluded that the differences between
men and women calls for in depth studies in order
to provide guidelines for intervention projects
in specific populations.
Infância e o Brief Symptons Inventory, procuramos
caracterizar a adversidade na infância, os
comportamentos de risco e as dimensões psicopatológicas,
e averiguar as diferenças entre 65 homens
e 42 mulheres reclusos em estabelecimentos
prisionais Portugueses. Homens e mulheres relatam
um quadro complexo de adversidade na infância.
Num total possível de dez categorias, verificamos
uma média de adversidade total de 5.05
(DP = 2.63) para as mulheres e de 2.63 (DP =
2.18) para os homens, sendo a prevalência significativamente
mais elevada junto da população
feminina (Z = -4.33; p = .000).

The Threshold Bias Model: A Mathematical Model for the Nomothetic Approach of Suicide
Comparative and predictive analyses of suicide data from different countries are difficult to perform due to varying approaches and the lack of comparative parameters.A simple model (the Threshold Bias Model) was tested for comparative and predictive analyses of suicide rates by age. The model comprises of a six parameter distribution that was applied to the USA suicide rates by age for the years 2001 and 2002. Posteriorly, linear extrapolations are performed of the parameter values previously obtained for these years in order to estimate the values corresponding to the year 2003. The calculated distributions agreed reasonably well with the aggregate data. The model was also used to determine the age above which suicide rates become statistically observable in USA, Brazil and Sri Lanka. The Threshold Bias Model has considerable potential applications in demographic studies of suicide. Moreover, since the model can be used to predict the evolution of suicide rates based on information extracted from past data, it will be of great interest to suicidologists and other researchers in the field of mental health
Relationship between e-cigarette point of sale recall and e-cigarette use in secondary school children: a cross-sectional study
Background There has been a rapid increase in the retail availability of e-cigarettes in the UK and elsewhere. It is known that exposure to cigarette point-of-sale (POS) displays influences smoking behaviour and intentions in young people. However, there is as yet no evidence regarding the relationship between e-cigarette POS display exposure and e-cigarette use in young people. Methods This cross sectional study survey was conducted in four high schools in Scotland. A response rate of 87% and a total sample of 3808 was achieved. Analysis was by logistic regression on e-cigarette outcomes with standard errors adjusted for clustering within schools. The logistic regression models were adjusted for recall of other e-cigarette adverts, smoking status, and demographic variables. Multiple chained imputation was employed to assess the consistency of the findings across different methods of handling missing data. Results Adolescents who recalled seeing e-cigarettes in small shops were more likely to have tried an e-cigarette (OR 1.92 99% CI 1.61 to 2.29). Adolescents who recalled seeing e-cigarettes for sale in small shops (OR 1.80 99% CI 1.08 to 2.99) or supermarkets (OR 1.70 99% CI 1.22 to 2.36) were more likely to intend to try them in the next 6 months. Conclusions This study has found a cross-sectional association between self-reported recall of e-cigarette POS displays and use of, and intention to use, e-cigarettes. The magnitude of this association is comparable to that between tobacco point of sale recall and intention to use traditional cigarettes in the same sample. Further longitudinal data is required to confirm a causal relationship between e-cigarette point of sale exposure and future use in young people.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Sedentary behavior in Brazilian children and adolescents: a systematic review
ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the methodological characteristics of the studies selected and assess variables associated with sedentary behavior in Brazilian children and adolescents. METHODS For this systematic review, we searched four electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Knowledge, LILACS, SciELO. Also, electronic searches were applied in Google Scholar. A supplementary search was conducted in the references lists of the included articles and in non-indexed journals. We included observational studies with children and adolescents aged from three to 19 years developed in Brazil, presenting analyses of associations based on regression methods and published until September 30, 2014. RESULTS Of the 255 potential references retrieved by the searches, 49 met the inclusion criteria and composed the descriptive synthesis. In this set, we identified a great number of cross-sectional studies (n = 43; 88.0%) and high methodological variability on the types of sedentary behavior assessed, measurement tools and cut-off points used. The variables most often associated with sedentary behavior were “high levels of body weight” (in 15 out of 27 studies; 55.0%) and “lower level of physical activity” (in eight out of 16 studies; 50.0%). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this review raise the following demands to the Brazilian agenda of sedentary behavior research geared to children and adolescents: development of longitudinal studies, validation of measuring tools, establishment of risk cut-offs, measurement of sedentary behavior beyond screen time and use of objective measures in addition to questionnaires. In the articles available, the associations between sedentary behavior with “high levels of body weight” and “low levels of physical activity” were observed in different regions of Brazil
