Predicting Nutritional Requirements and Lactation Performance of Dual-Purpose Cows Using a Dynamic Model

A dynamic application of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) model was developed to predict annual cycles in animal nutrient requirements and performance of dual-purpose (milk and beef) cows. Interactions from mobilisation and repletion of body tissue reserves and feed biological values are accounted with a time step of one day, which considers physiological status of the animal, variation in dietary composition, and other environmental factors. This outcome was achieved by modifying the input and output structure of the CNCPS version 4.0 to compute body weight and changes in body reserves based on predicted milk production, intake of feed dry matter, and energy balance. The supply of metabolisable energy from dietary intake is supplemented by tissue mobilised to support milk synthesis in early lactation; body tissue is repleted when energy balance is positive. Predicted animal nutrient requirements, milk production, dry matter intake, and changes in body weight and body condition score over the reproductive cycle were consistent with patterns and values in published reports and field observations in the Gulf Coast of Mexico case study region. Our simulations showed that a dynamic application of the CNCPS facilitates more accurate monitoring and management of cyclic changes in energy and protein balances over the calving interval of dual-purpose cows, which can help producers to achieve productivity and profitability goals

RECUERDOS DE MI UNIVERSIDAD: 50 años de experiencias y remembranzas (1973-2023)

The present book is the result of a call made to the Aguascalientes society at the beginning of 2023, as part of the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. In the call, we invited all individuals who had any connection with the state\u27s highest institution of higher education. This includes, of course, students from various educational levels: middle school, high school, undergraduate, master\u27s, and doctoral. Likewise, it includes those who work or have worked at the institution, as well as those who have taken extension courses, continuing education, or diplomas, to name a few.The central objective of the call was to inspire the writing of a university history, but now told from the personal experience of those who have or had some type of relationship with the University. We refer to the anecdotes that occurred in the classrooms, auditoriums, and offices during the teaching sessions, cultural events, and in the daily life of students, administrative staff, teachers, and in research matters. It is about making visible the experiences, through memory and recollection, of those people who wished to share a part of their journey in the institution. The convergence of the different university voices from yesterday and today allows for the creation of a great memorial narrative, (recalling the character of Jorge Luis Borges), about everyday life within the institution over the fifty years of its existence. It is significant that through personal memories it is possible to recover a history of the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes over five decades, from 1973 to 2023. The stories recorded here, although individual, were intertwined because they originated at the University, while the perspectives of the university community shaped and gave meaning to them. What other way would we have to know how each era was experienced at the University, besides the reports from the authorities, the administrative processes, and the institutional statistics? Precisely in a book like this one, which allows us to delve into the other memory of education, the one preserved by the men and women who experienced it in their time and decided to share it. It also contributes to the understanding of the educational processes of an institution, of our city, of the state, and even of the country.Therefore, this work focuses on the writing of ordinary people, who probably do not have writing as a daily practice, who do not appear in the speeches of university authorities or in the numbers and statistics of the annual administrative reports. Nor do their experiences appear in literary studies or in the productions of university television. They are the memories, the recollections, the experiences, or the anecdotes of those who at some point between 1973 and 2023 walked the halls of the Central Building, the University City, the UAA High School, the Petroleum High School, the Zootechnics Post, or some of the other spaces of the University. In short, these testimonies are sources for the history of this prestigious institution, but sources that come to complement the institutional documentation. The authors of these ninety-six accounts tell us how the first university of the state provided teaching and learning processes, the management and initiation of various educational and cultural projects, as well as how they experienced it.El presente libro es el resultado de un llamado que se lanzó a la sociedad aguascalentense a principios del año 2023, en el marco de los festejos por el 50º Aniversario de la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes. En la convocatoria invitamos a todas las personas que hubieran tenido alguna relación con la máxima casa de estudios del estado. Esto incluye, desde luego, a estudiantes de los distintos niveles educativos: secundaria, bachillerato, licenciatura, maestría y doctorado. Igualmente, abarca a quienes trabajan o trabajaron en la institución, así como a quienes tomaron cursos de extensión, educación continua o diplomados, por mencionar algunos.  El objetivo central de la convocatoria fue inspirar la escritura de una historia universitaria, pero ahora contada desde la vivencia personal de quienes tienen o tuvieron algún tipo de relación con la Universidad. Nos referimos a las anécdotas que ocurrieron en los salones de clase, en los auditorios y las oficinas durante el desarrollo de las sesiones de enseñanza, eventos culturales y en el día a día estudiantil, administrativo, docente y en materia de investigación. Se trata de visibilizar las experiencias, por medio de la memoria y el recuerdo, de aquellas personas que desearon compartir una parte de su trayectoria en la institución. La convergencia de las diferentes voces universitarias de ayer y hoy permite la constitución de un gran relato memorioso, (recordando al personaje de Jorge Luis Borges), sobre la vida cotidiana al interior de la institución a lo largo de los cincuenta años de su existencia. Es significativo que por medio de las memorias personales es viable recuperar una historia de la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes a lo largo de cinco décadas, de 1973 a 2023. Las historias aquí plasmadas, aunque individuales, estuvieron entrelazadas porque tuvieron su origen en la Universidad, a la vez que las perspectivas de las y los universitarios dieron forma y sentido a ella. ¿Qué otra forma tendríamos de conocer cómo se ha vivido cada época en la Universidad, además de los informes de las autoridades, de los procesos administrativos y de las estadísticas institucionales? Precisamente en un libro como éste, que nos permite introducirnos en la otra memoria de la educación, la conservada por los hombres y por las mujeres que lo experimentaron en su tiempo y decidieron compartirlo. Aporta, igualmente, al conocimiento de los procesos educativos de una institución, de nuestra ciudad, del estado y aún del país. Por tanto, esta obra se enfoca en la escritura de las personas comunes, que probablemente no tienen la escritura como práctica cotidiana, que no aparecen en los discursos de autoridades universitarias o en los números y las estadísticas de los informes administrativos de cada año. Tampoco sus experiencias aparecen en los estudios literarios o en las producciones de la televisión universitaria. Son las memorias, los recuerdos, las experiencias o las anécdotas de aquellos y aquellas que en algún momento entre 1973 y 2023 cruzaron los pasillos del Edificio Central, de la Ciudad Universitaria, de la Secundaria de la UAA, de la Prepa Petróleos, de la Posta Zootécnica, o de algunos de los demás espacios de la Universidad. En pocas palabras, estos testimonios son fuentes para la historia de esta máxima casa de estudios, pero fuentes que vienen a complementar la documentalia institucional. Los autores y las autoras de estos noventa y seis relatos nos cuentan así, las formas en las cuales, la que fuera la primera universidad del estado brindó los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje, la gestión e inicio de diferentes proyectos educativos y culturales, al igual que la manera en que lo experimentaron
