Molecular Dynamics Simulations Reveal the Protective Role of Cholesterol in β-Amyloid Protein-Induced Membrane Disruptions in Neuronal Membrane Mimics
Interactions of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides with neuronal membranes have been associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD); however, the molecular details remain unclear. We used atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the interactions of Aβ40 and Aβ42 with model neuronal membranes. The differences between cholesterol-enriched and depleted lipid domains were investigated by the use of model phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid bilayers with and without 40 mol % cholesterol. A total of 16 independent 200 ns simulation replicates were investigated. The surface area per lipid, bilayer thickness, water permeability barrier, and lipid order parameter, which are sensitive indicators of membrane disruption, were significantly altered by the inserted state of the protein. We conclude that cholesterol protects Aβ-induced membrane disruption and inhibits β-sheet formation of Aβ on the lipid bilayer. The latter could represent a two-dimensional (2D) seeding template for the formation of toxic oligomeric Aβ in the pathogenesis of AD

By focusing on the impact of different types of family routines and how they change, this commentary builds on concepts regarding the influence of perceived parental support and psychological control on next-generation engagement in family firms. Drawing on the organizational routines literature and the family studies literature, I propose that attention to family routines, and how these routines change (or not) over time can reveal additional insights regarding next-generation engagement in the family business
The physical parameters, excitation and chemistry of the rim, jets and knots of the planetary nebula NGC 7009
We present long-slit optical spectra along the major axis of the planetary
nebula NGC 7009. These data allow us to discuss the physical, excitation and
chemical properties of all the morphological components of the nebula,
including its remarkable systems of knots and jets. The main results of this
analysis are the following: i) the electron temperature throughout the nebula
is remarkably constant, T_e[OIII] = 10200K; ii) the bright inner rim and inner
pair of knots have similar densities of N_e = 6000cm^{-3}, whereas a much lower
density of N_e = 1500cm^{-3} is derived for the outer knots as well as for the
jets; iii) all the regions (rim, inner knots, jets and outer knots) are mainly
radiatively excited; and iv) there are no clear abundance changes across the
nebula for He, O, Ne, or S. There is a marginal evidence for an overabundance
of nitrogen in the outer knots (ansae), but the inner ones (caps) and the rim
have similar N/H values that are at variance with previous results. Our data
are compared to the predictions of theoretical models, from which we conclude
that the knots at the head of the jets are not matter accumulated during the
jet expansion through the circumstellar medium, neither can their origin be
explained by the proposed HD or MHD interacting-wind models for the formation
of jets/ansae, since the densities as well as the main excitation mechanisms of
the knots, disagree with model predictions.Comment: Figure 1 was changed because features were misidentified in the

High-frequency CO2-system variability over the winter-to-spring transition in a large coastal plain estuary
Understanding the vulnerability of estuarine ecosystems to anthropogenic impacts requires a quantitative assessment of the dynamic drivers of change to the carbonate (CO2) system. Here we present new high‐frequency pH data from a moored sensor. These data are combined with discrete observations to create continuous time series of total dissolved inorganic carbon (TCO2), CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), and carbonate saturation state. We present two deployments over the winter‐to‐spring transition in the lower York River (where it meets the Chesapeake Bay mainstem) in 2016/2017 and 2017/2018. TCO2 budgets with daily resolution are constructed, and contributions from circulation, air‐sea CO2 exchange, and biology are quantified. We find that TCO2 is most strongly influenced by circulation and biological processes; pCO2 and pH also respond strongly to changes in temperature. The system transitions from autotrophic to heterotrophic conditions multiple times during both deployments; the conventional view of a spring bloom and subsequent summer production followed by autumn and winter respiration may not apply to this region. Despite the dominance of respiration in winter and early spring, surface waters were undersaturated with respect to atmospheric CO2 for the majority of both deployments with mean fluxes ranging from −9 to −5 mmol C·m−2·day−1. Deployments a year apart indicate that the seasonal transition in the CO2 system differs significantly from one year to the next and highlights the necessity of sustained monitoring in dynamic nearshore environments
Have the changes introduced by the 2004 Higher Education Act made higher education admissions in England wider and fairer?
'Widening participation' and 'fair access' have been contested policy areas in English higher education since at least the early 1990s. They were key facets of the 2003 White Paper - The Future of Higher Education - and the subsequent 2004 Higher Education Act, with stated objectives that the reach of higher education should be wider and fairer. In particular, there has been considerable concern about admissions to 'top universities', which have remained socially as well as academically exclusive. The principal policy tools used by the Act were the introduction of variable tuition fees, expanded student grants, discretionary bursaries and the new Office for Fair Access (OFFA). This paper draws on publicly available statistics to assess whether the changes implemented by the 2004 Act have indeed made access to English higher education wider and fairer in relation to young people progressing from state schools and colleges and from lower socio-economic groups. It concludes that, while there is some evidence for modest improvements, these have been concentrated outside the 'top universities', which have seen slippage relative to the rest of the sector. The paper concludes with a discussion of the reasons why financial inducements appear to be a flawed and naive approach to influencing student demand. © 2011 Taylor & Francis
The TeV spectrum of H1426+428
The BL Lac object H1426+428 was recently detected as a high energy gamma-ray
source by the VERITAS collaboration (Horan et al. 2002). We have reanalyzed the
2001 portion of the data used in the detection in order to examine the spectrum
of H1426+428 above 250 GeV. We find that the time-averaged spectrum agrees with
a power law of the shape dF/dE = 10^(-7.31 +- 0.15(stat) +- 0.16(syst)) x
E^(-3.50 +- 0.35(stat) +- 0.05(syst)) m^(-2)s^(-1)TeV^(-1) The statistical
evidence from our data for emission above 2.5 TeV is 2.6 sigma. With 95% c.l.,
the integral flux of H1426+428 above 2.5 TeV is larger than 3% of the
corresponding flux from the Crab Nebula. The spectrum is consistent with the
(non-contemporaneous) measurement by Aharonian et al. (2002) both in shape and
in normalization. Below 800 GeV, the data clearly favours a spectrum steeper
than that of any other TeV Blazar observed so far indicating a difference in

A first measurement of the interaction cross section of the tau neutrino
The DONuT experiment collected data in 1997 and published first results in
2000 based on four observed charged-current (CC) interactions. The
final analysis of the data collected in the experiment is presented in this
paper, based on protons on target using the 800 GeV
Tevatron beam at Fermilab. The number of observed CC interactions is
9, from a total of 578 observed neutrino interactions. We calculated the
energy-independent part of the tau-neutrino CC cross section (), relative to the well-known and cross sections. The
ratio / was found to be
. The CC cross section was found to be cm. Both results are in

Detection of the BL Lac Object H1426+428 at TeV Gamma Ray Energies
A very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray signal has been detected at the 5.4 sigma
level from H1426+428, an x-ray selected BL Lacertae object at a redshift of
0.129. The object was monitored from 1995 - 1998 with the Whipple 10m imaging
atmospheric Cherenkov telescope as part of a general blazar survey; the results
of these observations, although not statistically significant, were
consistently positive. X-ray observations of H1426+428 during 1999 with the
BeppoSAX instrument revealed that the peak of its synchrotron spectrum occurs
at > 100 keV, leading to the prediction of observable TeV emission from this
object. H1426+428 was monitored extensively at the Whipple Observatory during
the 1999, 2000, and 2001 observing seasons. The strongest TeV signals were
detected in 2000 and 2001. During 2001, an integral flux of 2.04 +/- 0.35
x10e-11 cm-2 s-1 above 280 GeV was recorded from H1426+428. The detection of
H1426+428 supports the idea that, as also seen in Markarian 501 and
1ES2344+514, BL Lacertae objects with extremely high synchrotron peak

[Fe III] emission lines in the planetary nebula NGC 2392
NGC 2392 is a young double-shell planetary nebula (PN). Its intrinsic
structure and shaping mechanism are still not fully understood. In this paper
we present new spectroscopic observations of NGC 2392. The slits were placed at
two different locations to obtain the spectra of the inner and outer regions.
Several [Fe III] lines are clearly detected in the inner region. We infer that
NGC 2392 might have an intrinsic structure similar to the bipolar nebula Mz 3,
which also exhibits a number of [Fe III}] lines arising from the central
regions. In this scenario, the inner and outer regions of NGC 2392 correspond
to the inner lobes and the outer outflows of Mz 3, respectively. We construct a
three-dimensional morpho-kinematic model to examine our hypothesis. We also
compare the physical conditions and chemical composition of the inner and outer
regions, and discuss the implications on the formation of this type of PN.Comment: 41 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap
Investigating the Near-Infrared Properties of Planetary Nebula II. Medium Resolution Spectra
We present medium-resolution (R~700) near-infrared (lambda = 1 - 2.5 micron)
spectra of a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe). A narrow slit was used which
sampled discrete locations within the nebulae; observations were obtained at
one or more positions in the 41 objects included in the survey. The PN spectra
fall into one of four general categories: H I emission line-dominated PNe, H I
and H_2 emission line PNe, H_2-dominated PNe, and continuum-dominated PNe.
These categories correlate with morphological type, with the elliptical PNe
falling into the first group, and the bipolar PNe primarily in the H_2 and
continuum emission groups. Other spectral features were observed in all
categories, such as continuum emission from the central star, C_2, CN, and CO
emission, and warm dust continuum emission.
Molecular hydrogen was detected for the first time in four PNe. An excitation
analysis was performed using the H_2 line ratios for all of the PN spectra in
the survey where a sufficient number of lines were observed. One unexpected
result from this analysis is that the H_2 is excited by absorption of
ultraviolet photons in most of the PNe surveyed, although for several PNe in
our survey collisional excitation in moderate velocity shocks plays an
important role. The correlation between bipolar morphology and H_2 emission has
been strengthened with the new detections of H_2 in this survey.Comment: 13 pages, 8 tables, 33 figure
