    Kinetic Ising System in an Oscillating External Field: Stochastic Resonance and Residence-Time Distributions

    Experimental, analytical, and numerical results suggest that the mechanism by which a uniaxial single-domain ferromagnet switches after sudden field reversal depends on the field magnitude and the system size. Here we report new results on how these distinct decay mechanisms influence hysteresis in a two-dimensional nearest-neighbor kinetic Ising model. We present theoretical predictions supported by numerical simulations for the frequency dependence of the probability distributions for the hysteresis-loop area and the period-averaged magnetization, and for the residence-time distributions.     Correlations in Hot Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

    The single-particle spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter are computed using the ladder approximation within the theory of finite temperature Green's functions. The internal energy and the momentum distributions of protons and neutrons are studied as a function of the density and the asymmetry of the system. The proton states are more strongly depleted when the asymmetry increases while the occupation of the neutron states is enhanced as compared to the symmetric case. The self-consistent Green's function approach leads to slightly smaller energies as compared to the Brueckner Hartree Fock approach. This effect increases with density and thereby modifies the saturation density and leads to smaller symmetry energies.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    I-V curves of Fe/MgO (001) single- and double-barrier tunnel junctions

    In this work, we calculate with ab initio methods the current-voltage characteristics for ideal single- and double-barrier Fe/MgO (001) magnetic tunnel junctions. The current is calculated in the phase-coherent limit by using the recently developed SMEAGOL code, combining the nonequilibrium Green function formalism with density-functional theory. In general we find that double-barrier junctions display a larger magnetoresistance, which decays with bias at a slower pace than their single-barrier counterparts. This is explained in terms of enhanced spin filtering from the middle Fe layer sandwiched in between the two MgO barriers. In addition, for double-barrier tunnel junctions, we find a well defined peak in the magnetoresistance at a voltage of V=0.1 V. This is the signature of resonant tunneling across a majority quantum well state. Our findings are discussed in relation to recent experiments

    Sound and light from fractures in scintillators

    Prompted by intriguing events observed in certain particle-physics searches for rare events, we study light and acoustic emission simultaneously in some inorganic scintillators subject to mechanical stress. We observe mechanoluminescence in Bi4Ge3O12{Bi}_4{Ge}_{3}{O}_{12}, CdWO4{CdWO}_{4} and ZnWO4{ZnWO}_{4}, in various mechanical configurations at room temperature and ambient pressure. We analyze how the light emission is correlated to acoustic emission during fracture. For Bi4Ge3O12{Bi}_4{Ge}_{3}{O}_{12}, we set a lower bound on the energy of the emitted light, and deduce that the fraction of elastic energy converted to light is at least 3×1053 \times 10^{-5}

    The Λ\Lambda-parameter in 3-flavour QCD and αs(mZ)\alpha_s(m_Z) by the ALPHA collaboration

    We present results by the ALPHA collaboration for the Λ\Lambda-parameter in 3-flavour QCD and the strong coupling constant at the electroweak scale, αs(mZ)\alpha_s(m_Z), in terms of hadronic quantities computed on the CLS gauge configurations. The first part of this proceedings contribution contains a review of published material \cite{Brida:2016flw,DallaBrida:2016kgh} and yields the Λ\Lambda-parameter in units of a low energy scale, 1/Lhad1/L_{\rm had}. We then discuss how to determine this scale in physical units from experimental data for the pion and kaon decay constants. We obtain ΛMS(3)=332(14)\Lambda_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{(3)} = 332(14) MeV which translates to αs(MZ)=0.1179(10)(2)\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1179(10)(2) using perturbation theory to match between 3-, 4- and 5-flavour QCD.Comment: 21 pages.     Conductance peaks in open quantum dots

    We present a simple measure of the conductance fluctuations in open ballistic chaotic quantum dots, extending the number of maxima method originally proposed for the statistical analysis of compound nuclear reactions. The average number of extreme points (maxima and minima) in the dimensionless conductance, TT, as a function of an arbitrary external parameter ZZ, is directly related to the autocorrelation function of T(Z)T(Z). The parameter ZZ can be associated to an applied gate voltage causing shape deformation in quantum dot, an external magnetic field, the Fermi energy, etc.. The average density of maxima is found to be =αZ/Zc = \alpha_{Z}/Z_c, where αZ\alpha_{Z} is a universal constant and ZcZ_c is the conductance autocorrelation length, which is system specific. The analysis of does not require large statistic samples, providing a quite amenable way to access information about parametric correlations, such as ZcZ_c.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted to be published - Physical Review Letter

    Signatures of the impact of flare ejected plasma on the photosphere of a sunspot light-bridge

    We investigate the properties of a sunspot light-bridge, focusing on the changes produced by the impact of a plasma blob ejected from a C-class flare. We observed a sunspot in active region NOAA 12544 using spectropolarimetric raster maps of the four Fe I lines around 15655 \AA\ with the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS), narrow-band intensity images sampling the Fe I 6173 \AA\ line with the GREGOR Fabry-P\'erot Interferometer (GFPI), and intensity broad band images in G-band and Ca II H band with the High-resolution Fast Imager (HiFI). All these instruments are located at the GREGOR telescope at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. The data cover the time before, during, and after the flare event. The analysis is complemented with Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The physical parameters of the atmosphere at differents heights were inferred using spectral-line inversion techniques. We identify photospheric and chromospheric brightenings, heating events, and changes in the Stokes profiles associated to the flare eruption and the subsequent arrival of the plasma blob to the light bridge, after traveling along an active region loop. The measurements suggest that these phenomena are the result of reconnection events driven by the interaction of the plasma blob with the magnetic field topology of the light bridge.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    Introduction: This paper presents the Portuguese results from the first phase of the PPPSER project, which has a qualitative nature. Micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) represent 99.9% of the Portuguese business setting. According to national sources, there are 1,167,811 SMEs in Portugal, with a combined turnover of 220 billion euros. Therefore, the main goal of this phase was to gather data from relevant SMEs stakeholders about what they perceived as psychosocial risks, their main causes and consequences, the general level of awareness about the issue, the main obstacles to prevention and intervention and specific actions developed considering those risks.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
