Spin-orbit induced mixed-spin ground state in NiO perovskites probed by XAS: new insight into the metal to insulator transition
We report on a Ni L edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study
in NiO perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator ()
transition as temperature decreases. The L edge presents a clear
splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground
state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the
importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a
mixed-spin ground state. We explain the transition in NiO
perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni crystal field splitting
that induces a spin transition from an essentially low-spin (LS) to a

Os solos cultivados com cajueiro foram identificados pelo estudo pedologico das areas produtoras do Piaui. Dados de producao de castanha, complementados com visitas aos pomares de cajueiro, indicaram as microrregioes produtoras: Baixo Parnaiba, Campo Maior, Floriano, Alto Piaui e Caninde, Baixoes Agricola Piauienses e Alto Parnaiba. Seismic performance of the St. George of the Latins church : lessons learned from studying masonry ruins
This work addresses the seismic safety of the remainings of one church in Famagusta (Cyprus), including also a historical survey, inspection and diagnosis. The seismic safety is studied in detail, using limit analysis of collapse mechanisms as preliminary safety assessment. Then, a finite element model was prepared and updated using dynamic identification results. The updated model was subjected to non-linear static (pushover) analysis in different directions (global and principal) using two lateral load patterns: proportional to the mass and proportional to the modal shapes of the structure. Finally, a time history analysis is also performed. The results allow to conclude that: (a) limit analysis of collapse mechanism can be adequately employed for the seismic assessment of masonry ruins, as they provide comparable results to more sophisticated analysis; (b) load patterns proportional to the mode shapes in pushover analysis of complex masonry structures should be carefully considered, as they can provide too conservative results; (c) the ruins of the church exhibit a low seismic safety.This work was partly funded by project FP7-ENV-2009-1-244123-NIKER of the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission Project
An intrinsic state for an extended version of the interacting boson model
An intrinsic-state formalism for IBM-4 is presented. A basis of deformed
bosons is introduced which allows the construction of a general trial wave
function which has Wigner's spin-isospin SU(4) symmetry as a particular limit.
Intrinsic-state calculations are compared with exact ones showing good

The type N Karlhede bound is sharp
We present a family of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds whose invariant
classification requires the seventh covariant derivative of the curvature
tensor. The spacetimes in questions are null radiation, type N solutions on an
anti-de Sitter background. The large order of the bound is due to the fact that
these spacetimes are properly , i.e., curvature homogeneous of order 2
but non-homogeneous. This means that tetrad components of are constant, and that essential coordinates first appear as
components of . Covariant derivatives of orders 4,5,6 yield one
additional invariant each, and is needed for invariant
classification. Thus, our class proves that the bound of 7 on the order of the
covariant derivative, first established by Karlhede, is sharp. Our finding
corrects an outstanding assertion that invariant classification of

Medium-modified evolution of multiparticle production in jets in heavy-ion collisions
The energy evolution of medium-modified average multiplicities and
multiplicity fluctuations in quark and gluon jets produced in heavy-ion
collisions is investigated from a toy QCD-inspired model. In this model, we use
modified splitting functions accounting for medium-enhanced radiation of gluons
by a fast parton which propagates through the quark gluon plasma. The leading
contribution of the standard production of soft hadrons is found to be enhanced
by the factor while next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections are
suppressed by , where the nuclear parameter accounts for
the induced-soft gluons in the hot medium. The role of next-to-next-to-leading
order corrections (NNLO) is studied and the large amount of medium-induced soft
gluons is found to drastically affect the convergence of the perturbative
series. Our results for such global observables are cross-checked and compared
with their limits in the vacuum and a new method for solving the second

Weaning of immunosuppression in long - Term liver transplant recipients
Seventy-two long-surviving liver transplant recipients were evaluated prospectively, including a baseline allograft biopsy for weaning off of immunosuppression. Thirteen were removed from candidacy because of chronic rejection (n=4), hepatitis (n=2), patient anxiety (n=5), or lack of cooperation by the local physician (n=2). The other 59, aged 12-68 years, had stepwise drug weaning with weekly or biweekly monitoring of liver function tests. Their original diagnoses were PBC (n=9), HCC (n=l), Wilson’s disease (n=4), hepatitides (n=15), Laennec’s cirrhosis (n=l), biliary atresia (n=16), cystic fibrosis (n=l), hemochromatosis (n=l), hepatic trauma (n=l), alpha-l-antitrypsin deficiency (n=9), and secondary biliary cirrhosis (n=l). Most of the patients had complications of long-term immunosuppression, of which the most significant were renal dysfunction (n=8), squamous cell carcinoma (n=2) or verruca vulgaris of skin (n=9), osteoporosis and/or arthritis (n=12), obesity (n=3), hypertension (n=ll), and opportunistic infections (n=2). When azathioprine was a third drug, it was stopped first. Otherwise, weaning began with prednisone, using the results of corticotropin stimulation testing as a guide. If adrenal insufficiency was diagnosed, patients reduced to <5 mg/day prednisone were considered off of steroids. The baseline agents (azathioprine, cyclospo-rine, or FK506) were then gradually reduced in monthly decrements. Complete weaning was accomplished in 16 patients (27.1%) with 3-19 months drug-free follow-up, is progressing in 28 (47.4%), and failed in 15 (25.4%) without graft losses or demonstrable loss of graft function from the rejections. This and our previous experience with self-weaned and other patients off of immunosuppression indicate that a significant percentage of appropriately selected long-surviving liver recipients can unknowingly achieve drug-free graft acceptance. Such attempts should not be contemplated until 5-10 years posttransplantation and then only with careful case selection, close monitoring, and prompt reinstitution of immunosuppression when necessary. © 1995 by Williams & Wilkins
The U(5)-O(6) transition in the Interacting Boson Model and the E(5) critical point symmetry
The relation of the recently proposed E(5) critical point symmetry with the
interacting boson model is investigated. The large-N limit of the interacting
boson model at the critical point in the transition from U(5) to O(6) is
obtained by solving the Richardson equations. It is shown explicitly that this
algebraic calculation leads to the same results as the solution of the Bohr
